I trained my Lab myself with the help of a book called "Water Dog". Very well written and realistic for the beginning trainer. The guy that wrote that book wrote another book called "Field Dog". I would go and purchase that book. It will answer all your questions and be a great addition to the advice Knine gave you.

I believe that too. I don't belive more rules/laws are the answer. So... what are some ideas for educating hunters? We have a great hunters ed program, unfortunately its gone online. I have a big problem with that one. Should hunters ed be required? Other states do it, why don't we? I think that is one rule most if not all of us would agree with. But in the end, will it change anything?

Well, today is the last day of the early archery bull hunts and we're already starting to hear stories about 2 hunters going after the same bull, hunters shooting bulls and others going in and cutting heads off the carcass's. I'm sure there are other things happening we haven't heard about yet. There has been alot of debate on other topics and I thought I would centralize it. I'd like to have an honest discussion here about where hunting is headed and what if anything can be done to change it. Group hunting, guides, waterhole conflict... its all up for discussion. The reason I'm starting this thread is so we can dicuss this topic while the iron is still hot and fresh in our heads. Lets hear the stories guys!

Well, we got to hear both sides of a HUGE topic on the elk section. WITHOUT bashing either party whats your take guys? Is there a darn thing we can do to avoid this crapolla? What roll do you think the guides played in this one? I knew we wouldn't hear from them. They walked away unscathed. Do you think they had something to do with this situation going bad? I'm not looking to beat anybody up, guides included, I just want to have an honest disussion about it. It IS our job to police our own. I believe We fill the gaps between law and ethics. There are now enough hunters that hit these forums that I believe we can make an impact. Chef, I am getting involved. I've got a busy fall but as soon as my life calms down and I get some meat in the deep freezer I will be joining up and attending meetings. I was about to join many sportsmans groups before I moved to Wyoming but now that I'm back. Thank you for the encouragement!

I can get you not wanting to continue a pointless argument. And do not feel bad about your shot, thats just part of hunting. We all get excited and that could happen to anyone. It is unfortunate to wound a bull but it happens. If all of us let a bad shot linger in our heads we would ALL be hanging our heads. Sounds to me like there are some common truths here as well. Unit 10 is a busy unit this time of year and it would be dang hard if you were hunting in the middle of that mess to keep a bull from getting pushed. Like I said before, there are some main points where you guys see things completely different but if I sit back and look at both points of view I can see the mix up. I said that unless DL came on and refuted the main points my opinion would not change about him ut he did. He gave a different version on each and every point. Except to the fact that he knew the bull was wounded but I think he said as soon as he knew the bull was wounded he backed out. I guess the other question is, are you 100% positive it was them walking back through where that bull was after G&F left? If you're not then you made a big booboo posting it was them! I mean its not like we all have a different sense of fashion when we're hunting, it would be pretty easy to mistake two guys for two different guys. I mean, the simple fact that the area you guys were in was loaded with hunters could throw both of your stories into a complete tail spin. 1 other thing I think you can feel better about is the fact that if it was a high one lung shot, that bull is probably still alive, unless someone else poked a hole in him. If had hadn't been pushed you may have had a shot but once that bull got pushed it wouldv'e been pretty easy for him to live. Now give me the GPS coordinates to where you last saw the bull and I'll go get him with my November tag. I'll let both of you have pictures taken with him. LOL Donnie

Lock'er up tight IMO. Altough it seemed heated at times I truly enjoyed the debate with everyone that participated. Interesting that Craig hasn't been around to refute any of DL's comments....hmmm. Another interesting fact is that Craigs guide did become friends with DL. Crow soup, crow salad, crow kabab, crow creol, bbq crow..... I have alot of eating to do. Naw I was right the whoooole time.... RON WHIIIIIITE!!!

I haven't even started hunting yet really. I shot a meat buck on the early hunt but that hardly counts, I spent a total of 30 minutes in the unit before I tagged out. 2 elk hunts coming up. Really ready for those. The of course there my favorite hunt... Late archery!!! C'mon Jan!

Hey, don't be a stranger! I'm a butthead sometimes but I respect you backing your buddy. I would have done the same thing. Like I've been saying, I am very concerned with where hunting is going and situations like this really get me going. Doesn't matter at this point who was right or wrong, the problem is that it happened and a bull got wounded and went un-recovered. That's the sad part of the story. I think he lived though which is good. Have a good one.

Couesnaz... I don't think anyone is eating crow today. Thanks to DL for posting the story. We heard both sides of the story and there are some major differences on the most important points. The points most of us have/had a problem with. Not my place to say who is misrepresenting things and I don't think we'll ever know. Which is fine. I will agree with DL on the most important point of the whole story, I too think that bull survive, unless someone else put an arrow in him. Hopefully he's a happy bull again, out there shooting his own arrows!

Gotta say, all bs aside, pretty stand up of you to come and tell your side. Thanks for telling it.

Interesting read actually. Deffinately two different stories on the main points. The only people that know the truth are Craig and his guide and you and your guide and friends. I can see the chance of mis-perception but someone is outright lying.

Well, hoping to hear the other side of the story but... well I got to read... that. Ok well, tell your side then. If we are a bunch of bullies jumping to conclusions and executing you, shut it down. I went back to the other site and read Craigs version again and I don't know man... pretty detailed. Here's an snipit from Craigs story and what most guys probably have the biggest problem with: "12. They admitted to knowing we were on the bull. 13. They admitted knowing the bull was shot. 14. And the spotters admitted to seeing us tracking the bull. 15. They admitted to putting their hunter in between us and the bull so he could get on him. and 21. In less than 2 hours of Game and Fish leaving we went back in on a high point to glass and they were already back in there after the bull." Not my words Craigs words. So if you have a different version please lets us know. Your buddies have been on here for a week tellings us there are two sides to every story. I'll tell you though, if your side of the story doesn't differ greatly from those 4 points right there... don't expect that plate of crow your buddy couesnaz has been carrying around for a week to get touched!
