Unit 35A Gould's, where to look?

I am sitting here with 8 bonus points and no Gould's tag, but a friend of mine drew one in Unit 35A this year with 4 points. Since sooner or later I am going to draw one of these tags, I agreed to go with him on his hunt. Problem is neither of us has hunted that unit before. I see a number of folks I know who have drawn this tag in the past and if it isn't some major breach of turkey etiquette, if anyone has any advice on where we should go to do some pre-season scouting, I would like to here it. Post here on give me a call @928-303-9481. His hunt starts on the 27th, I heading there on the 23rd. Oh I do have a San Carlos tag, and after I agreed to go with him I learned that the dates for that hunt have changed (April 20-May 6). However a friend comes first, so I'm hoping to find him a bird in a couple of days, then I'll head up to San Carlos. Thanks, and we can sure exchange info for info. You got a big game hunt up north in my neck of the woods I'll be glad to give you info on where to go in exchange for some good turkey info. Don Martin
  6. At the risk of being suspected as a plant and the "enemy" for bringing forth false info with regards to this proposed Kaibab National Monument issue, I thought you guys might want to see what Mr. Tom Britt, who was the Regional Supervisor for the AZ G&F Dept. (Region II Flagstaff) for 26 years wrote to the Commission back in 2008 about what he saw as the impending takeover of the lands north of the Colorado River. I very much respect Tom as a friend and really value his opinion and insight on conservation matters. Read the letter and see what he thought was going to happen! national monument designation

I encourage you all to look at the letter that I posted from a friend and very smart man, Mr. Tom Britt, who wrote to the AZ G&F Commission in 2008, warning of all this Grand Canyon stuff. Very insightful on Mr. Britt's part. Read it and be afraid, cause what he predicted is now upon us.... Don Martin

    national monument designation

I would not be so quick to laud the AZGFD. There are people within the agency who are directly opposed to hunting, who believe that a "healthy ecosystem" is paramount to anything with human intervention. There are way too many people within the agency who make their living off the wolf program and are tied to the USFWS. By September of this year there will be documentation that will be provided which will show without a doubt that some within the agency think that wolves on the Strip or Kaibab is not a bad thing. Picture 3 metapacks of 250 each running all around Arizona... That is what will have to be fought and it will have to be done within the structure of the EIS comment time frames. You are invited George to contact me with any questions, but please do not think that everyone in the agency has hunter's best interests...BPJ BPJ: You warned me and I didn't listen... Don Martin

Non-Typical Solutions: Watch out! Those black helicopters are getting closer and those who speak of the threats to Arizona and Arizona's wildlife are just "plants" who only want to subvert and fragment the sportsman's community! Oh by the way, I was at a meeting today with Congressman Gosar and a county supervisor from Mohave County and several from Kane and Washington County in southern Utah. A number of ranchers from the Strip and in Mohave County were all there. As was a news guy from the radio station. Wow was I ever able to "brainwash" this bunch who apparently don't know how their constituency feels about this made up issue that I'm helping spread all over the sportsmen internet sites. Geez guy, get a life. This is for real, its a threat, and if all you can offer is to ask fellow sportsmen to look for conspiracies involving folks you probably have never met, you are truly out of touch my friend! Anyone who will send me their e-mail address I will be glad to send you a PDF copy ( 7.9 MB file) of this proposal. I like what Nick is saying about the Sportsman's Alliance. Next week Mohave County Supervisor Gary Watson and I are meeting Congressman Gosar here in Kingman to discuss this matter. I understand it is going viral in southern Utah, as it should be. As more and more people hear about it, they should start writing to all our federal legislators, the Governor and our state legislators and get them on board with opposing this. Read the proposal then read between the lines. How man times do you see the words wolves, black bears, Grizzly bears, mountain lions and even jaguars mentioned? Come on you can surely figure it out. They want to take 1.7 MILLION acres of public lands and turn it into a defacto wilderness complete with an unlimited amount of lions, bears, wolves, jaguars etc. You guys on hear that was able to catch the TV news people's attention on HB-2072 ought to be beating down their doors and get this brought to everyone's attention. Sportsmen in Nevada, New Mexico and Utah got to get after it too! This isn't just an Arizona issue, its a WESTERN issue. Pull together guys and get this thing stopped in its tracks! This post is for RINGER! Diversion? You got to be kidding! Get from behind that anonymous keyboard and give me your name and e-mail and I'll gladly send you a copy of the proposal! My personal e-mail is awoguide@citlink.net what is yours? Its a huge file, 7.9 mg, but I'll sure as heck be glad to share with anyone who wants to read it! Not sure what others in the outdoors community are doing about this, but I'm meeting with Mohave County Board of Supervisor Gary Watson, who is strong supporter of sportsmen and the ranching community, and Mr. Crumbo, one of the authors of this proposal next Thursday in Kingman, to see exactly what is going on. Black helicopters, tapped phone lines, and now diversions: the conspiracy theorists seem to come out of the woodwork. For the rest of you sportsmen, this is for real, probably the largest threat to the AZ landscape (1.7 million acres proposed for designation) and to wildlife. It covers the entire North Rim, all of Units 12A and the eastern part of Unit 13A. We got just a couple of weeks to get on this. If Obama's people think this will fly with MOST of the public, then he'll do it for sure. They are not going to listen to any Republicans, but maybe just maybe some level headed Democrats might want to let others know this is NOT a good idea for Arizona or Arizona's wildlife. Don Martin

Heck of a year in Unit 18B!

Just had to share some good fortune with the folks that watch the javelina boards. This year in Unit 18B we had a total of 10 tags for all those associated with us. Before the season ended, we filled nine of those tags, including a couple of real whoppers for our area in eastern Mohave County. It ended up we got four pigs with muzzleloaders, four pigs with bolt action handguns, and 1 pig with a Ruger revolver. We always try and target boars in the herds, and on this hunt we got 6 ought of 9. Then on the rifle hunt in the same unit, we filled three out of four tags! And what was strange is that that out of all of those, we only hit two herds with two pigs each, and each of htose herds had 10 or more pigs in them. Normally we have a little in house big pig contest, but this year we didn't and wouldn't you know it, I got the heaviest pig out of our camp. My boar checked in on the scale 43.56 lbs. The second largest pig taken was by my client from Bullhead City, and his boar checked in right at 40 lbs. I know you guys get bigger pigs in other areas, but I've been kinda keeping tabs over the years of the pigs taken in our camp and the average adult boar is about 33 lbs, while the average sow is just a tad heavier, at 33.50 lbs. 15. One of the local trappers up here got quite the surprise last weekend when he checked a pair of box traps he had set out for bobcats. In one cage was a full grown and p.o'd boar javelina! A couple of yards away in another cage trap was another critter, a 40 lb. mountain lion! The trapper said it was quite the sight! He let the pig out first and the kitty out second. First time I have heard of a lion in a cage trap... Don Martin
  16. Folks: I have a 15-year-old young man in Kingman who is afflicted with cystic fibrosis. He just recently completed my Hunter Education class and is a great kid. He wants to go on a big game hunt. I am seeking either an early or late bull elk tag, or a Kaibab (12A West) 12B, 13A or 13B deer tag for him. I'll have no problem getting an outfitter/guide for him, but I need a tag to get the ball rolling. I know I'm asking a lot, but if someone finds out that they are not going to be able to use one of these tags for whatever reason (weddings.vacations, moving out of state, etc), I sure hope that you would consider donating it to AZ HOAL. Thank you! Don Martin Outfitter/Guide Coordinator AZ Hunt Of A Lifetime This is a photo of the young man from Utah, Luc Orton who we helped last year get this buck on his hunt in Unit 13B with HOAL!
  17. Fellow Sportsmen & women: I have a 15-year-old hunter from Kingman who wants to go a big game hunt. He is afflicted with cystic fibrosis and he just completed my Hunter Education class. He is a great kid. What I am looking for is an early/let bull elk tag, OR a Kaibab (12A West), 12B, 13A or 13B deer tag for this young man. I know this is a heck of a lot to ask, but if for any reason (wedding, vacation, moving out of state, etc) that you cannot use one of these tags, please consider donating it to AZ HOAL. I would never ask you to do something that I myself wouldn't do. A number of years back I drew an early muzzleloader bull elk tag on the Camp Navajo and I signed it over to a young man from Payson. I got a heck of a lot more satisfaction and enjoyment by doing that, than if I had got a big bull myself on that hunt. I assure you I won't have any problem finding him a guide and helpers, no matter what tag we get, but I do need a tag to get the process started. Thank you, Don Martin Outfitter/Guide Coordinator AZ Hunt Of A Lifetime P.S. Here is a photo of Utah resident Luc Orton with the buck he took on a 13B hunt with HOAL last year. Let's make another young sportsman's dream come true?

    North of the River Muley's

OK, just wanted to throw this one out to you. This buck was taken last year on a 13B rifle hunt. The hunter was Tony Keller from Kingman. We assisted on the hunt. One of the most unusual bucks I've ever seen. I guessed him at 34 wide when I videotaped him and it turned out he was exactly that! Has so many drops who can count 'em? Only thing he was missing was a set of....testicles! And from what we found, he never, ever had them. Just a great, young stag. This is why I have 13 bonus points and want just ONE MORE 13B tag.. Then I promise I will be a desert deer hunter after that and leave all the premium Strip tags to others! Don Martin Arizona Wildlife Outfitters
  19. Guys: I know that the results of the deer/sheep draw have just came out, but I need to make a plea. Arizona Hunt Of A Lifetime needs any and all big game tags so that we can make some kids dreams come true. The only way we can do this is by receiving tags that are donated by sportsmen like yourself. If you can't use a tag, please consider donating it to us. It doesn't cost anything for you to donate it and there is no charge for the youngster when he gets it. You can find a donation form on our website www.hoalarizona.org or call me at 928-681-4867. You can also contact our state ambassador Matt Minshall by call him at 602-471-3038. Thank you, Don Martin Outfitter/Guide Coordinator AZ Hunt Of A Lifetime This is Luc Orton whose dream to take a good mule deer came true last year when an Idaho sportsman donated his Strip deer tag to HOAL. Luc bagged this nice 5 X 4. The taxidermy work on this fine buck was donated by Henry's Artistic Wildlife in Kingman.

    244 inch Kaibab Monster!

Yep, we saw that buck in the back of the truck when we were getting fuel @ Jacob's lake. AWESOME! Heard you guys got a lion on the same hunt. That's great too! Bucks can't get big up there if they are eaten by those Big Kitties! Good job to all. Don Martin Arizona Wildlife Outfitters

    strip tag

Here is what your dad is looking for! This is a great buck that scores over 200 that was taken last year on the Strip by my friend Mike Hendrix. Mike worked a secluded water for about 19 days before this buck gave up his nocturnal ways and came in. Don Martin Arizona Wildlife Outfitters

    Three 13a taga

Just so you know there are about 250 or so waters in Unit 13B. The G&F water book doesn't even begin to show all of them. Many of them are seasonal waters, and a number of them are way out where you might not expect to find them. These areas will hold boomers and they never get hunted due to the low population of deer in the area. Would you be willing to work one area for your entire hunt that has just a couple of bucks in the area? That's exactly what many will be faced with if they don't know the unit. Those 10 days on the rifle hunt go by so fast it is unreal. Archery hunters got more time, but the monsoon rains can really mess up your plans. Don Martin Arizona Wildlife Outfitters Here is a monster buck that my friend Mike Hendrix got in 2010 on his archery hunt while working a water in Unit 13B. Mike was there something like 19 days before he whacked this monster that had been nocturnal for most of the archery hunt.

New Arizona Desert Bighorn Sheep Book

Guess I ought to get one since we've got a few featured in there! Don Martin Arizona Wildlife Outfitters Kingman, AZ Not sure if this one made it in the book. This was the 170+ ram that Iowa resident Don Oostenink took last year on opening day in Unit 15D. The two largest rams in this unit were taken within minutes apart and we have some awesome video of them knocking heads just before BOTH got taken! This is the ram we took in 2009 in Unit 15D with Paul Taylor from Tucson. We had looked at a ton of rams before Paul put the hammer on this big guy!
