    Nicole's First Elk

Well unlike myself my wife was fortunate to draw an archery cow tag in 3A/3C. Along with Nicole's good fortune her girlfriend drew a cow tag and two of my good friend drew bull tags in the unit. Since my parent's have a place in Heber I spent a lot of time in the unit scouting and putting up cameras along with treestands. I knew that a treestand would provide the best shot opportunity for Nicole although we would sacrifice seeing as many elk. I had been working on different stand locations since early June. By the time the hunt rolled around I had six different stands up and I felt confident we would get some opportunities at elk. Nicole worked on her shooting all throughout the summer and by the time the season rolled around she was ready. She was shooting very solid out to forty yards. Opening morning found Nicole and I walking into our treestands with bulls bugling all around us. As we got roughly 200 yards from the stand I could see the flash of my trail camera going off in the dark. Turns out there was a nice 6x6 bull already there. We waiting for him to leave and then made are way to the stand. Would you know it that at 7am a mule deer buck walks by at 25 yards. I guess he knew he was safe since the season had just closed. The rest of the morning was uneventful. At 3pm we started walking into the same stand only to bust a cow who was at the salt. Man our timing was off. They next morning we made our way into the same stand but it was very quiet. We got out of the stand early and foot hunted but we could not turn up anything. That afternoon we headed into the stand at 2pm to make sure we did not miss any early arrivals. It was a slow afternoon with very few bugles. At 630pm I heard rocks tumbling and I told her to get ready. A cow walked straight into the salt and stood broadside at 18 yards. Nicole drew her bow very slowly and made sure to aim and she made a perfect shot right behind the should. The arrow was buried all the way to fletch. I watched the cow run off and I was pretty sure I heard her fall. I got down because we were losing light quickly and I attempted to blood trail. The blood trail was weak mostly because her arrow had not come out the other side and the entrance was a little high do to the angle of the stand. We came back the next morning and after a twenty minute trail we found her cow only 150 yards from the stand. We are still working on killing a couple bulls and one more cow. Hope you enjoy Brian

    AZ Speed Goat

Well my good friend Jason from New Mexico finally drew an Arizona Antelope tag. I scouted as much as I could and I was able to find a few good goats with the help of a couple of friends. Opening morning found us looking at a really good goat with twenty does. However I am not a great judge of antelope so we were jut not sure how good he was. We were hoping to find an antelope around the 80 inch mark. We decided to pass on this goat since it was only five minutes into the hunt. Throughout the day we were able to get on five more bucks and it was obvious the first buck was by far the best. We headed back and we immediately located the buck with his does. We were able to close the distance to 200 yards but we could only see the bucks horns and he just never presented a shot. It finally got dark and we backed out. The next morning found us looking at the same buck. My wife was along for an extra set of eyes so she kept an eye on the buck while we moved in. We were able to close the distance to five hundred yards before we ran out of cover. We would crawl a hundred yards and they would feed a hundred yards farther. After doing this for three hours the antelope finally started to move off and they went over a rise. This gave us the chance to close the distance. After covering 1000 yards we were finally cresting the hill they had gone over. The backside of the hill was much thicker with junipers. Jason spotted the herd once again 500 yards out. However, due to the cover we were able to move much faster to close the distance. We played cat and mouse in the trees for an hour before Jason made a great 425 yard shot on his Arizona antelope. The buck scored right at 81". To say the least we were both excited. Besides killing a great buck the best part of the hunt was that my wife was back at the truck and she was able to drive the nearly three miles right to us and pick us up. That was worth its weight in gold. Hope you enjoy Brian

    Dads NM Antelope

Well my dad headed out to New Mexico last week to try and shoot a speed goat with his bow. Unfortunately I was invited but I had to pass do to work commitments. My dad did a good job of keeping me updated on his progress and on the evening of the second day he smoked a great goat. He shot the buck at 40 yards with a rage two blade and it did not go very far. Way to go dad. Hope you Enjoy

My shot was 590 yards. The lighter color on the back is dirt because we had to pull him out of bush that he had rolled into. Thanks for all the great comments.

    Kansas Gobbler

Well the beginning of April found my dad, two brothers, and I hunting big Eastern gobblers in Kansas. Let me tell you if you have not been to the mid-west to hunt turkey's you are missing out. I have never seen so many birds in my life. In the beginning of April in Kansas the youth gun season is open along with the Archery season. My dad and I were hunting with our bows and my two brothers would be using the boom stick. Well both boys harvested huge toms. One of Taylor's birds weighed 30.5lbs. On the last morning I was set up on the edge of a field and we were able to call two long birds down the edge of the field. They hung up at 40 yards but that was close enough. The 2 3/4" vortec did a number on the bird. It was a great trip and we all had a blast. Brian
  19. Hey Everyone, I finally got around to uploading and editing my fiance Nicole's coues deer video. This was from her November Arizona hunt. Hope you enjoy the video. Youtube Link: Thanks Brian

    Huskemaw 5-20 LR Rifle Scope

I own a Huskemaw and I have enjoyed hunting success with it out to some considerable distance. I think the turret system is what makes the scope because I believe the optical quality of the scope is not that good for the price. I have chosen to invest in Leupold scopes and have the turret put on them because the optical quality in my opinion is much better and the price is cheaper than a husekmaw. If you already have a leupold scope you can send it to them and they will put the turret on for $125.00. Once you have turret on the gun you can have Kenton industries make you a yardage cap that goes on your turret and that only costs $75.00. If you are looking to spend more money the swarovski scope with the outdoorsman turret is also amazing. I would encourage you to look through the scope next to a Leupole or a Swarovski before you make your purchase because the turret system can be duplicate from other companies. I hope this help. Brian

    Mexico Adventure 2010

Hey Everyone, Well I am back from Mexico and we had a great time. After hunting Mexico for several years my father and I decided to take both my 13 year old brothers. We were hunting with Javier Monge of Mexifari Outfitters. This was the 3rd year I have hunted with Javier and we had a great time. The deer were rutting but it appeared the big boys had not yet gotten fired up. On the second morning I was glassing a buck we called the big eye guard buck which Alex ended up killing two days later when I had a heard of pigs walk right up on me. Taylor could not resist and he put the hammer down on a nice pig. That evening my father and Alex were out looking for a buck of there own when they spotted a young 3x3. Alex had never killed a deer before so it was decided he would shoot this deer. It was getting dark so Alex had trouble finding the deer. He made the shot and it sounded like a hit but no one was sure. They looked for the deer that night and did not find him. The next day however they found the deer only 50 yards from where he had shot it. This was Alex's first deer ever. The next morning found Taylor and I looking over a big basin. I spotted three bucks on the far end of the basin so we moved closer to get a better look. Once we got closer I could not relocate the bucks so I started glassing again. I spotted a really nice 3x3 working a doe at 600 yards. We closed the distance to 408 yards and decided that would be as close as we could get. I got Taylor set up prone and turned the video camera on. When the buck cleared the trees Taylor made a perfect heart shot and the buck was down. After Taylor shot his big buck Alex wanted a chance at a big buck. We all headed back to the location of the big eye guard buck and I was able to pick him up a short time after day break. The buck was always in the thick and would never step clear. The buck finally worked up through a saddle and out of sight. After repositioning to see the other side of the saddle we finally found the buck again. Again the buck would never step out of the trees. Finally nearly 5 hours after I had spotted the buck he beaded in a spot where we could see his vitals. I turned on the video camera and got the gun set up on the deer. Alex found the deer and made a perfect 300 yard shot and the deer just roled over in its bed. This deer has amazing eye guards 5.5 inches. The next day was our last day to hunt and with both boys finished I was hoping to find a big buck for myself along with my father. That morning I hiked into some pretty amazing country and found a big old buck that had good mass but very short tines. Javier had explained that he needed some of these older deer on the down hill removed as managment bucks so I opted to take the buck. After one shot at 278 yards the deer was down. That only left my father to fill a tag. It was going to have to be big or nothing. That evening we went out and an hour before dark I spotted the best buck of the trip. Unfortunately he went over a ridge and we could never relocate him. I guess the memories of that buck will bring us back next year. Reflecting back on my coues deer hunting this year I have been part of 9 successful hunts with only one of the 9 bucks scoring under 90 inches. It has been an amazing year and it was awesome to hunt with my dad and brothers. If you get a chance check out the videos on Youtube. Taylor's Buck: Alex's Buck: I hope you enjoy Brian

    What to Do.

I am headed to hunt Oryx in a month so I can let you know how it goes. Seems to me if you are dreaming about hunting Dall sheep whats a few more years to wait. It would be the hunt of a lifetime. Eastern whitetail would be great I am just not sure if PA will have the caliber of bucks you are looking for. So of the three if I had to choose hands down it would be a January San Carlos tag. This hunt would cost you the least in travel expenses you probably could hunt nearly the entire season and with some scouting there are some giant bucks. Also the Oryx draw is by no way a guarantee. I am interested to see what you decide. Brian
