So my January has been very busy leaving me very little time to hunt. I headed out Saturday for only the second time this year. Along for the ride was my younger brother. First light found us both behind the Swarovski trying to find a good buck. Taylor spotted the first deer and why he was directing me to the deer he spotted I found four more deer. The four deer I found turned out to be two bucks and two does. It was still early and the sun was not up yet so I was having some trouble evaluating the deer. One of the bucks appeared to have a huge frame but I could not see many points. I put the spotting scope to work and when the sun finally came up I could see the buck had a giant frame with a great spread but he did not have much for tines. I decided he was worth a go and off I went. I covered the mile pretty quickly and during my hike over to the buck he decided to move away from the other deer and bed down. The buck traveled approximately 700 yards away from the other deer before bedding. Once the deer bedded it was go time. I managed to get to 100 yards and the buck stood and changed positions before bedding again. I was able to sneak 55 yards closer and it was time to wait him out. After waiting for approximately 30 minutes I heard something to my left. I turned and saw a doe 50 yards out feeding my way. I figured she was going to blow the stalk but she just hung out and fed. After 15 minutes the buck stood up and started making his way towards the doe. He went behind a bush and put his head down and I came to full draw. The buck stepped out at 40 yards and I sent the arrow on its way. The hit was a little back but the buck only went 30 yards before bedding down again. I was able to stalk up and get another arrow in him and I had my first spot and stalk coues deer. Its not my biggest buck but I will gladly wait 351 days for another tag. I had a great time with my brother and the stalk came together perfectly. The buck has 17" beams and a 16" inside spread. He had two eye guards on both sides but he busted one off. I rough scored him at 85". Hope you enjoy.

In my opinion it really comes down to ethics and practice. If you are shooting an 80lb bow with a 500 grain arrow but you don't practice then you should not be hunting. If a youth hunter is shooting a 30lb bow with the right arrow and broadhead combination and he practices he will be fine. Most youth hunters I know are so excited to hunt they practice way more than the average adult. Ultimately it's up to us, the parents to prepare our kids. Brian

There is no better feeling then working hard and locating a shooter and working hard to put him on the ground. Great job.

Well my good friend Andrew managed to pull another December coues deer tag. I believe this is his fourth tag in roughly ten years. He has had some great luck not to mention an archery 3C bull tag with 6 points. With tag in hand this looked to be a fun hunt with friends and family. Along with Andrew his father Keaton also drew the tag. Andrew managed to harvest a nice buck early in the hunt so the few days after Christmas were reserved for his dad. Let me say I know this unit pretty well and it was tough to find a buck over 85". We had very limited time to hunt and Keaton had only killed one other coues deer. After nearly three days of glassing without turning up a buck over 85" it was time to put something on the ground. An interesting side note is we could not find a buck over 85" but we managed to find 6 lions in three days. The last hour of the last day found us looking at a 3 point at 280 yards. With light fading quickly Keaton made a perfect one shot kill and he had his second coues buck. I am pretty sure his son Andrew was hoping the gun was off due to an earlier miss on a couple lions. Sorry drew had to throw that in there. I managed to capture the hunt on video. Hope you enjoy. Video Link: Brian

Lots of mass. Thats a great buck. Congrats. Brian

That is a truly great lion. Well done. If you wanna run some cats in southern AZ I will gladly tell you where to start in 36C. Brian

Very cool. Great job to all. Brian

Way to stay after it. Looks like a great buck. Brian

Those are two great bucks. Very impressive story. It is funny how big bucks hang out. Brian

If it was my choice I would be looking at 21,22,23. The southern units are good but they have four coues deer hunts in those units every year where as the units I mentioned only have two hunts a year. My ultimate unit would hands down be 23. Brian

What a great way to end the year.

January 2012... You can't kill all year long if you don't start the first day!
