How Long Before a Carcass Completely Scavenged?
AZ RANGER replied to lonne's topic in Black Bear or Grizzly Bear hunts
My son shot a deer this last season at around 11am. We boned it out and hiked back to camp. The next evening we went by the kill site and there was not a piece of flesh anywhere. Bones were picked completely clean. There was bird sh!t everywhere so I assumed it was mostly from them and they didnt waist anytime. Granted thats not a carcass with full hide etc but it went quick. Ive also found human remains in the desert on several occasions some very recent deaths and others that were just sun bleached bones. I can attest that the summer heat seems to expedite the process. -

I agree with others just take what you got and go for an over-nighter. I still laugh at the gear I took 20 years ago on some of my early trips. (Cans of Dinty Moore heavy weight military sleeping bags etc). Made some great memories In the backcountry though that wouldnt have happened otherwise. I still dont have the best gear but I take what I got and make it work. Ive taken my kids with me and thats a great experience too. Ive noticed they dont care about comfort near as much as I do, but they are always hungry. Bottom line is dont overthink it. You dont need the best of the best, however the lighter you are the farther you can go. I am raising some pack goats now so that will be a game changer for me.

Alaska Trip Help (updated with trip report pics)
AZ RANGER replied to AZ RANGER's topic in The Campfire
Well I finally made some solid plans. Spent way more than I wanted to but as most people already mentioned Alaska is really expensive. I booked a diy flyout trip on the Stuyahok river. Pilot is going to drop me and my son and maybe a buddy and then pick us up down river 6 days later. Thanks for the responses. Any other advice is still welcome. I need to start shopping for a bear gun. Does anyone have Ruger Alaskan they want to sell? Im thinking 454 Casull. -
Thats on my bucket list. Especially after recently eating axis deer. They are phenomenal!

I took the kids to the ISE show today and we had a pretty good time. Kids all enjoyed it. Lots of things I wish I could afford.

Me and my boys have killed a bunch of coues with 6.5 140 grain Bergers from 100-700 yards all with great results except this year. My 11 year old made what I thought was a perfect shot at 402 yards. Entered behind the shoulder between ribs. Passed through both lungs and exited between ribs. Penciled though with very little expansion. Just a freak deal I guess. The buck layed down behind a boulder we could only see his head. We gave him an hour thinking he would die. That turned into two hours then we tried to find a spot to take a follow up shot. We couldnt find an opening so we just decided to walk straight into him. I saw the buck still picking up his head at the 3 hour mark through the binos. When we got to him at just past 3 hours he must of just taken his last breath because he was dead.

Alaska Trip Help (updated with trip report pics)
AZ RANGER replied to AZ RANGER's topic in The Campfire
The bears are definitely on my mind not sure how I feel about that yet. I keep telling myself its like the way people not from Arizona freak out about rattle snakes when in reality they are not that big of a deal. I have no desire to combat fish like in the last pic looks awful. After talking to another member Im strongly considering a trip in September to target rainbow rather than salmon. I really dont care so much about the salmon runs as I do just having a cool Alaska experience. Big rainbows would be awesome. Thanks for the reply -
So cool. Congrats to both of you. Great memories there

Alaska Trip Help (updated with trip report pics)
AZ RANGER replied to AZ RANGER's topic in The Campfire
Thanks for the info guys. Keep the suggestions coming. I was hoping to be able to park and hike a couple miles in to get away from the crowds but maybe thats not realistic. I didnt envision Alaska being wall to wall people. That sucks. As far as camping with the boy goes Im not worried about shower and shitter issue too much. My son is pretty outdoor hardened and will feel right at home. And we may grab a room here and there if needed. If I were to budget a little more to make it an awesome trip and get further into the backcountry does anyone have suggestions on the best way to do this or outfitters to use. A 3-4 day float trip would be awesome. We really want to do Alaska but we may resort to the lower 48 or Cabo haha. -
