    What is this?

They monitor stream flow and water levels and send data through radio telemetry. I believe they are mainly used for quick notification of flooding or dam breaks etc.

    150" WMAT Coues

WOW! Congrats! It would be enough for me just to see a buck like that before I die, but to harvest it...Unreal!

  7. This morning I tagged along with my long time friend and his girlfriend Erin on her first whitetail hunt. The morning started off a liitle hectic when I rolled over in bed and seen that it was 30 mins. past the time I set my alarm for. Somehow it had not gone off. I scrambled out the door and met up with them and we were off. We got to our spot and started hiking up the steep canyon to our vantage point. We get set up and start glassing. Almost instantly after getting behind my binos I spot three deer moving through a saddle. One of them is a little fork horn. I watch them for a couple of minuets thinking that would be a great first deer, but they quickly dissapear behind some brush and we never see them again. A little later we pick up three does feeding on the same hill. After watching them for a while and deciding there are no bucks with them I move my focus to a different hillside. I find one doe feeding down the ridge but no more bucks. By then it was about 0830 and we decide to climb up and over so we could glass the shady canyon behind us. But when we get to the top we kick out a spike and a doe at about 250 yards. Erin tries to get set up on the spike but the deer quickly get out of range without any shots. Right then we look down and see 3 bucks below us on the other side at about 150 yards. Erin repositions and gets set up for a shot. We were in a perfect position for these deer and they had no idea we were there. She finds one in the scope of her Rem.700 .243 and makes a perfect shot. I watch through the binos and see a chunk of hide fly off and the buck drops dead in his tracks. Somehow she managed to stay completely calm under pressure. But my buddy sitting right next to her trying to coach her was breathing heavy and his heart was racing. By 9am it was all over. She had her first deer down Right after the shot. Walking up on her buck. A great first coues.

    Great year! 2009 Recap

Good point Scott. Last year's burnout had a lot to do with missing old hunting buddies and learning to go solo, but where one door closes, another opens. I was able to meet you and Cory because of this forum. January is not too far away - I know of a few honey holes in you guys' neck of the woods. It would be fun to go down there and chase a mixed bag of muleys and hard-rutting coues! I've been there in January before and it can be really fun. Something to think about anyway. Lets make it happen. That would be a blast. I should have an archery javelina tag to add to the mixed bag also during Jan.

    Great year! 2009 Recap

Jason, you had heck of a year for sure. And just think, about this time last year you were "burnt out" with hunting. What a difference a year makes. Congrats

Went 3 for 3 this Year!!!

Heck of a year for you Jason. Congrats. Did you end up running into any UDA's while down there?

    +1 Awesome!

    Would you go?

That's a tough one. For me it would be hard to enjoy the hunt. I am always on edge and jumpy when backpacking in by myself, but when you add to the situation that armed smugglers are around I would not get any sleep. Good luck
  13. I had a friend offer to work up some loads for my .270 Win. After doing some research I have decided I want to try the berger bullets in 130 gr. Problem is they are out of stock everywhere. I know ammo is hard to come by right now, but I was just wondered if anyone had a lead on any of these. I would prefer internet orders becuase I am a 2 hour drive from Tucson and 3 from Phoenix. Thanks

    Best Bivy Ground Pad

I have had a thermarest for about 10 years now. It has been very good. It is inflateable but even without inflating it has a little cusion, so if I pop it I wont be altogether SOL. It is pretty light and packable sorry I don't have dimensions or weight but it has worked well for me. So here's another vote for thermarest

+1 on the great service from Doug and Camera land. I just ordered a new scope and arrived last night with a new hat and coffee drink also. This is my second order from them and I am sure it won't be my last. Thanks Doug

    Help me pick a tripod

I am in the market for new tripod. My previous tripod was a cheapy. I would like to spend around $150 for a new tripod and head. It will be under my Minox 15x58 which weigh approx 3.5 lbs. This will serve as my hiking tripod so light weight is a must. I would like to be under 4 lbs for the tripod and head. Let me know what you think of these options. If I have to add a head I would like to go with a manfrotto 700rc2 head which weighs approx 1 lbs. Slik Sprint Mini. 1.6 lbs I would like this one but not sure it will handle the weight very well. About $60.oo plus $85 for head Slik pro 340 EZ. About a 1lb heavier than the mini, but surdy. About $110 with a decent head already attached Slik sprint pro. Liteweight but I could maybe stand behind. About $105 with a decent head alreaddy attached Slik Sprint pro II. Same as above. about $85 plus another $85 for head. Velbon sherpa 600rf Almost twice as heavy as the mini, but would handle the minox well, and I could stand. About $110 plus $85 for head I am open to other suggestions if you have them. Thanks

    Help me pick a tripod

The sherpa has 1/4 inch threads and the 700rc2 has 3/8 female threads, you just need to buy a bushing to adapt them, should'nt be a problem, and yes the head is removable with the sherpa.

    Help me pick a tripod

I finally decided on the Velbon Sherpa 600rf, with the ph157Q head. It is not the head I wanted but it came with the pod for a good price, so I will at least try it before I order the 700rc2. I can't wait to try it out.
