    Lake Pleasant or bartlett camping?

Bartlett was awesome! The camping was exactly what I was looking for. Long drive from my house but we had a blast. Fishing was not great but my boy caught a ton of blue gill and green sunfish. Thanks again for the help.

Turned out really good. Such an awesome buck. Not that it matters but I am curious what he scored. I dont remember if you ever posted the score or not. If so I missed it.

    Lake Pleasant or bartlett camping?

I've been to Apache. I really like it too, but want to try something different. Are the roads around to the north side of Bartlett decent? I'll be in my truck (2500hd) but don't want to bounce around too much of its bad.

    Where are we.....

I just took my oldest son there in May. We went to Yankee stadium too. Fenway exceeded my expectations. The atmosphere there was incredible. We really enjoyed it.

  10. It cost me about $60 to change the oil myself in my duramax. That is with Rotella full synthetic and a Napa gold filter. For me, it would be a way bigger hassle to take my truck to the dealer and wait for it to be done. It literally takes me less than 15 minutes to do myself.

    6.5 x 284 - thoughts?

Jason, I have a factory savage in 6.5x.284. It shoots great and has great ballistics with minimal recoil. The 6.5 bullets all have great BCs, although not as good as nosler claims I'm sure. I shoot the Berger 140s and get consistent 3/4 moa with 4831sc and lapua brass.

    Finished mount

My wife went down to Weller's and picked up my buck yesterday. They did an awesome job! They also went out of their way to find a cape that matched my buck's dark antlers, since mine was ruined. They did not even charge me for the cape! Big thanks to Weller's Wildlife Studio. Link to hunt story: http://www.coueswhitetail.com/forums/topic/53262-backpacking-buck/?fromsearch=1

It does seem like they are closer together. Perhaps there was some shrinkage. I think the angle of the pic makes the tips look closer too. Here is another angle.

Going from 15x58 to 12x50. Will I regret it?

I switched from the minox 15x58 to swaro 12x50's. I have had them about a year now. The weight savings is a huge plus. I carry the 12s around my neck now too, which cleared some room in my pack. I loved my minox but I don't regret making the switch at all. There are times when I wish I had a pair of 8s or 10s around my neck, if im in thick cover but otherwise the 12x50s are a great compromise. I did not even notice the loss in magnification.
  15. Just wanted to share a few pics of my hunt. We decided to hunt a new area this year and although I was skeptical at first I am glad we did. I was able to take a buck that I am very happy with. Our Camp: This was my second time trying to sleep in a hammock. I am still not completely sold on it, but its not bad. Some awesome fall colors: I ended up shooting this buck on the second morning. We saw another nice buck and several small bucks on the opener but this one was a no brainer for me. Big thanks to my good buddy Aaron for all his help. We have been on some great hunts together over the years, and this was no different. We had originally planned to camp near this spring but opted to stay up high so we could be closer to our glassing area. We ran out of water quicker that expected though and this was a welcome site on the way out.

    Packing In?

Katadyn base camp water filter and I like the Jet boil stoves. Hammocks are nice but I don't sleep that well in one. You will not really save that much weight with the hammock because you will still need a thermarest to insulate underneath you. And you need a tarp or rain fly to stay dry. If the weather looks good I leave the tent behind and take a thermarest and a small tarp just in case. I sleep much better on the ground.

    Merriams double

We have had a busy start to turkey season this year and thought I would share some of our adventures. The jr hunt started with a total of 6 kids in our camp, but onlly 2 old enough to hunt. The others came along to watch. I am the father of three sons, and a friend of mine brought 3 more so we had our hands full. For some reason I failed to take many pictures but here is part of our crew. We only had a couple days to hunt and the weather was not cooperating but we gave it our best shot. The first morning we were in birds right away. We had a couple gobblers fired up and heading our way in no time. I had both boys set up to shoot off of a rest. The only downside to that is that it's hard to reposition if the birds come in from a different direction than expected. Unfortunately that is exactly what happened. We had a hen come in close to the decoys but the gobblers stayed out of the boys field of view. They finally caught on to us and left without a shot.

    Azg&f why 400 youth tags in 12a

I had the same experience as you last year. We had lead flying over our heads as we ran for cover. I can't imagine what it will be like now. I think we will hunt elsewhere this year.

Thanks everyone AZkiller, we did hunt the burn a little, but mostly out of the burn. Big Browns to answer your questions, I soaked all the meat in a brine of water, salt, lemon and garlic. I left it in the brine for 2 days and then cooked it slow over a mesquite fire. It was easily some of the best game meat I've ever had. Very flavorful and tender. I actually got the idea from Steve Rinella on an episode of meat eater. The decoy was made by my buddy Aaron. His art skills are pretty impressive. We had other decoys too, but when we killed this the only one we had set up. It worked great.

We got into quite a few other birds with the boys but could not ever get it to work out. The trip was still a success in my book though. The boys got to see some toms strutting and heard lots of gobbles. They saw a lot of elk and deer too. We tried to do some fishing but the wind was pretty bad. Overall a great trip. The following weekend I was out with a buddy of mine trying to fill our tags. The weather was bad again. The birds were not talking much at all. We only had one bird roosted for opening morning and he was in a bad spot so we didn't even go after him. We found some other birds, but they were not hardly gobbling at all. Saturday was much better. We located a Tom but he didn't seem to interested in our calls so we started heading back to the truck. As we crested the top of a hill, I let out a crow call and got a response immediately, and they were close. My buddy and I quickly tried to get set up but they were on top of us before we were ready. We sat behind what little cover we had and waited for them to move away from us. After about five minutes of them gobbling like crazy they finally moved on. We got into position and softly called to them. They came right back to us. It was two gobblers and we were going to try and shoot them both at the same time. They were only about 20 yards out. The problem was that there were enough trees between us, that whenever I had a shot Aaron didn't, and when he had a shot, I didn't. This went on for what seemed like forever until we decided Aaron would just shoot and then I would try to get on the other bird afterwards. As soon as Aaron shoots, the other bird runs through a clearing, and in the blink of an eye our turkey hunt was over.

    Anyone hiked Picacho Peak?

I worked there from 99-2003 and I've hiked it more times than I can remember. It is a difficult, challenging hike and I always enjoy it. My kids made it up there twice this year.
