White Mountain Shooter's Assoc., Inc. Fund Raiser
EdD270 posted a topic in Conservation Group Events
The White Mountain Shooter's Association, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to establishing a quality shooting facility in the Show Low/White Mountains area. We're working with USFS, AZGFD and other agencies toward that end. We recently enjoyed a great success when the GFD Commission voted unanimously to seek a Special Use Permit from USFS for a range at a site we identified and promoted to them. We are holding our Third Annual King of the Mountain Shoot on Sept. 19, 2009. Registration starts at 8:30 AM. The shoot will be in Pearce sand pit off Lone Pine Dam Road. Signs will be in place from the junction of HWY 260 and Lone Pine Dam Road in Linden, outside Show Low. This is a fun shooting event for all the family and involves events in practical pistol, bullseye, blackpowder, rimfire, cowboy action and other shooting sports. All firearms and ammo and targets are supplied. Participants should bring eye and ear protection, water or other favorite NON-ALCOHOLIC beverages and a chair would be nice, too. Registration fee is $20.00 per shooter. We are trying to arrange for some snacks to be available for purchase. Awards will be given in various categories. White Mountain shooter's Assoc. Inc. memberships are also available. Check the web site at www.wmsainc.org. -
Forgive me for resurrecting an old thread. I've hunted grouse in the White Mountains for several years. You can find them up on Escudilla Peak, and in the area South of Big Lake, and in the Burro Mountains a little NW of Big Lake. They're scarce. There are also several on the Apache Res. but you'll need to get a special Res. permit to hunt there. Be ready for lots of hiking at high altitude, bring water. They're hard to find and a lot of work, but great fun and really good eating. They are much more common in Colorado, I used to get several while elk or deer hunting. My sons would pot them with a .22.

Good advice from several here. I'm a ways away, in the White Mountains, but I have a laser bore sighter and would be happy to do it for you if you're ever up this way. Just glad to help if I can.

You did the right thing in backing out of the first site, though you didn't have to as others have noted. Doing the right thing has it's own reward, as you now know. I'm sure that great first archery buck is even sweeter because you did it right. Great job, great buck.

Welcome to the site. I'm new, too, both to this site and to Coues hunting. Glad to have you here.

Don't mean to derail this thread, but what do you load it with, powder, weight, etc. I reload for my .270 and love Barnes, but have so far only used the 130 gr X and TSX. Love to try new loads.

CouesAz, no I don't have an ATV, just an old F150 FWD. I do have some pretty good binos and a lot more patience than I used to have. My wife says I'm just old and lazy. Whatever. I plan to use my turkey seat and cushon for sitting and glassing. I plan to do a scouting trip down there after quail season opens, do some scouting and hunt quail, too. I've gotten maps from mytopo in the past and really like them, but I'm not sure what I want on it yet. My wife's nephew and his family live down near there and I hope to get some pointers from them, though they haven't hunted Coues, either. Meantime, I've been looking at BLM, USFS and AZ Gazeteer maps for general knowledge. I have shooting sticks, and an old camera tripod. Hoping that one or the other will work. I don't have plan "A" now, let alone plan "B", but hope to put something together before season opens. Thus the plea for help from you folks who are more knowledgeable and experienced than am I. I've hunted mulies here in AZ, but never coues, or Coues. My nephew is a fanatic, but has never hunted down there, either, and I don't see him very often. He's warned me that it will get to be addictive, like turkey hunting. I know different species have different habits, and know nothing about the Coues, so all advice, help, anecdotes and rumors are welcome. Thanks to you all for the info so far.

Hello, I'm new to this board and new to coues hunting. I'm a native Arizonan who's wandered around during my career. Now I'm back and living in the Linden area, near Show Low. I have been hunting mulies, antelope and elk in CO, whitetail in MO, with some success, and have been successful taking elk here in AZ. I've never hunted coues before. I got drawn for coues in unit 30B for 11/27-12/3/09. Does anyone have any advice for me?
