Great story about a calf being rescued from a wallow........... http://rmefblog.blogspot.com/2013/10/integrity-shines-through-young-ethical.html

What a great way to spend a birthday. And a nice buck too.

So great. Congratulations to him!

Tonight I made some burgers from some of the best meat I have ever had the privilege of eating - Muskox. My friend brought some down to me a few months ago. No pictures, it did not last too long. I also cooked up some elk burgers to compare and the muskox was every bit as good, maybe better. Neither my friend nor I add fat to our ground meat. Right now I have elk, deer, moose and muskox in my freezer and I would say muskox may be better than the rest. If you ever get the chance to have muskox you will see what I mean.

Last comment from me on this one....... In my mind, this post has gotten a little out of hand and I don't want to add any more fuel to the fire. Right now Casey is dealing with some bigger issues, He and his family are being threatened by idiot fans. Is one game really a reason to threaten a kid with violence and death? I hope none of you think so. Like others have said, it is a young team - many of these guys are 18 and 19 years old. They will all get past this loss and improve. But, no one has the right to threaten a kid because he missed a few field goals. The fan violence associated with sports is an embarrassment at every level - both physical violence and verbal harassment. Bonecollector 777 - I never said I coached Casey. And I don't go around taking credit for making an athlete good or getting him a scholarship or getting him accepted to the college of his choice. I clearly said that there are 11 players on the field and to blame one player is a cop out. Read between the lines - this means it is a team effort by all, including coaches. az shooter - I am far from pampering the kid. Obviously he will recover.I was merely pointing out the other miscues of the game. Is supporting someone pampering? Shooter McGavin - The number one kicker in the country is 14 of 19. Casey is 13 of 18......I guess they both suck and should not be playing football because they have missed. When I grew up the team philosophy was - we win as a team and we lose as a team. When I coached, we had the same philosophy.

Is the kicker your best friend or something? You're going all out on defending him and it'd crazy. Bottom line is he missed 3 field goals last night. Did you really say he is one of the best kickers in the nation right now? Haha get real. . Whether other guys screwed up early in the game or not you're man crush missed when it counted most. And missed BAD. I'm not a kicker and I could miss that bad if Arizona wants to get me a scholarship. Arizona wasn't a top 10 team and never belonged at 10 anyway. Ha, ha....I was waiting for some type of comment like this. I've know the kid since he was young. As a former kicker and coach, I guess I can see the big picture. Not to mention, I have had many students move on to play college ball. I guess I take it a little personal when people jump on athletes for making mistakes, especially if they have never been in their shoes.

......and I watched the game on TV. Look at the reply, he was hit in the foot by a USC player. If a call was made you would be cheering. If the offense had converted, he wouldn't have had to make 5 field goal attempts. Any coach would rather have 7 than 3. What's BS is that the Cats defensive didn't show up until the 4th quarter and Solomon over threw multiple receivers. Kickers get all the blame, but last I checked there are 11 guys on the field. It is easy to blame one player, but that is just a cop out.

You guys are crazy to blame Casey (UAs kicker) for this loss. I know Casey very well and he is one of the better kickers in the nation right now. If he did not have a successful onside kick (2nd this season), UA would not have even had a chance. He actually has kept UA in most games this year. The Cats could not convert in the red zone. How about the fumble on the 2 yard line? Not sure Casey had anything to do with that. How about how crappy the defense played? I don't think Casey is a defensive lineman or a safety ( I know one of the kids playing safety so I won't bad mouth him) The 1st field goal he missed was a 48 yarder, by no means a gimme. His long is 49. How about the bad call on the 2 point conversion - trying to run up the middle - joke, given the fact they couldn't do it all night. Maybe the coaches should have tried to get the ball closer on the last series to give Casey an easier attempt. Not sure if it was his fault the other field goal was blocked, it is kind of hard to be an offensive lineman and a kicker at the same time. With the way UA played, they were very lucky to even come this close......

The safest thing would be for him to skip the draw and wait and get a leftover with you. Then you both get a rifle tag in the same unit after the draw.

Great deer. Congrats to your son.

Traditional style - Thompson Center Renegade 50 cal. No scope. Great shooting gun, very accurate and comfortable. -
Just seeing if anyone has fished Willow Springs or Woods Canyon lately. I'm going up to do some scouting for turkey and thought I would take the kids fishing. Anyone hear of any reports and what they might be biting on.....Thanks!

That it is really a shame......how many wolves were in the pack?

I prefer to hunt alone. But, I like to meet up with hunting partners for lunch or around the campfire. I have spent many nights out in the back country solo and I have never been worried about my own capabilities or safety. But, the last 5-10 years or so, I am a bit worried about the safety of my gear and equipment when I leave camp for the day. Seems as though there has been a shift in values. Even way off the beaten path, I have run into some individuals that gave me the creeps. I don't go on hunts south of Tucson solo.

This is amazing footage.....In recent years, I keep seeing more and more packs of coyotes. It seems like years ago, lone coyotes and pairs were common. Now, packs of 5 or 6 are more common. We always see them while hunting deer or elk and I just can't bring myself to shoot them while waiting for that buck or bull. Too worried about ruining the morning or evening hunt.

I've done the hike 3 times - once in the 70's before the big flood, once in the 90s after the first big flood, then once more a few years ago. Amazing every time I go. But, then again, I find every part of the Grand Canyon special. The hike in and out is really not bad at all. The first 1.5 to 2 miles are switch backs, after that it is level hiking. The heat will take it's toll way before the difficulty of the hike. But, October will be perfect. I guess it depends where you live - I can tolerate hot weather living in Phoenix. Two times, I slept in my truck at the trail head. This allowed for an early start. I'm not sure if that is still allowed. I think 3 days is good. An early start down will give you half a day at camp on day 1. Day 2 hike down to Mooney Falls and then to Beaver falls. Day 3 get up early, but not at the crack of dawn. Go for another swim and hike out. In October you can hike out mid day and be fine (if the heat doesn't bother you). I always bring my own food. I guess I'm cheap. Based on how much permits have increased over the years, I suppose food and drink at the village has also increased quite a bit. There is a spring down by the campsite that has drinking water. I usually treat this water, just in case. I'm not sure if you have to? I use iodine tablets (old school). Just bring a few quarts for the hike in. Like any backpacking trip, bring some salted Gorp to snack on and stay hydrated. Shorts, a swim suite, a hat, a few change of socks, one or two t-shirts, and a light jacket are all you need. Small tent and light bag and pad. Lots of good camping spots toward the back end of the campground. Display your permit on your pack, they will check. If you bring wine or whiskey, make sure it is hidden...again, they will check. Have a great time....there are a few rope swings that are must!

Nice job. I'm sure your Dad was thrilled - not only to get a nice bull, but to also have a young body to pack out meat.

Great elk - Congrats. -
Keith - don't be fooled by the name . Muskox is not gamey at all - even less than elk or buffalo and neither one of those are gamey. I am not sure what muskox eat, most of the year they are digging through snow to find food. But the meat is very lean and red. No smell at all either. It seems more moist than moose or venison. Sometimes moose can dry out, even though they eat alot of aquatic plants. Black bears are definitely a favorite in the village were my buddy lives. I suppose it has to do with their diet - mostly berries and bugs. But, Grizzlies also gorge themselves on berries in the fall. But brownies and grizzlies also eat tons of fish in the fall - I bet that adds a bit of a strong flavor tot he meat. I'll ask my friend next time I talk to him.......I have had swan up there and it was very fishy tasting - I think swan is the only wild game I have not carried for. All they eat is fish and aquatics.

It's been missing for about a month. I was also wondering why they removed the pictures. .

It depends on your education level. Going back to school is tough, but worth it. There is always a need for teachers, especially in the CTE (Career and Technical Education) Fields. Pay is barely enough to live on, but if you have a wife that works, it will be fine. This is my 21st year at the high school. Benefits are good and so is retirement. Days off often coincide with hunts - Last year there were 3 days off during the early bull hunt, Veteran's Day is often a 4 day weekend (we have that hunt this year), Thanksgiving for rifle bull and off course 2 weeks off during the December whitetail hunt. Being home when the kids are off is a big plus too. It is easier to get certified as a CTE teacher when you have experience in the field.

I ordered mine on August 30th. They were shipped on September 4th. Still waiting for them to arrive. I noticed on my order receipt that it said "Quality - 1st". Does anyone know what this means? I hope some weren't Seconds.

I am 46 and thought the very same thing a few weeks ago. I think this is a normal process that most people go through. I used to scout, hunt, fish, hike all the time - before kids. Often by myself. Some things I have stopped doing due to concern for own safety - glacier climbing and rock climbing trips are few and far between these days. I remember spending many nights alone along the Mexico Border looking for deer - back in the 80s and 90s. Too much at risk now. I do not want my kids to be without a father - who would pay the bills:). I also think about the money involved in all of these trips I used to take. When gas was 78 cents a gallon, I could go everywhere and not feel guilty. Now with braces, dance classes, AIA athletic fees, etc....I have to spend my dollars more wisely. Family vacations are also different with 2 high school age daughters. A fishing trip to the white mountains does not compare to a beach house in San Diego. I made a vow to myself and my family - this year I am getting back to some of things I used to do. If they want to join me great, if not I am going alone. Now, I just need to get in better shape so I don't kill myself.

I have 14 tickets to the ASU vs Weber State Game. August 28. I bought these tickets at the group rate, but we have changed our mind on the game. Group rate was about $40. They only give a 15% off for the group rate, not that great of a deal. Anyway, here is the info - Section 2 Row 28 Seats 4-17 Great seats......Face Value is $64. Asking $20 per ticket OR $220 for all 14 tickets.
