I killed my mountain lion, or wildcat if you will, with a Browning Abolt 270wsm. Since you have "elk" rifles already, flip a coin.

I have the DPMS 308 and it shoots very well. It is,IMHO, too heavy to pack in any distance. Mine weighs in around 9 lbs without the optics or mag. I like my rifle to be around the 6lb range. I bought some 5 rounders from 44mag.com for around 25 bucks each with the intention of hunting with it. Just sayin. BTW Nice gift.

product review. new barrel, new scope, junky ranger finder
cactusjack replied to .270's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
What model Range finder was the one you took back. I was considering buying one of the Leupold 1000 with the angle system. I have the Leica 1200 now but I am a sucker for new gadgets. -
I agree with buying the side of beef, thats way cheaper than hunting. If I put a price per pound on the deer my son shot this year, I could have bought a case of ribeyes for less. That being said I wouldn't trade that weekend for anything.

The first come first served "rule" is a good one, however I have had other hunters show up well after I was sitting a spot and climb in a treestand they put there weeks earlier. I even shined my light to one group of them as the were walking in to let them know I was there. I think he was a guide. What a tool.

I couldn't have asked for a better day. I spent it hunting with my 11yo son and 6yo nephew and bro in law. We saw pigs, 20 or so does and 3 bucks. The boy had a tag last year but passed on a 260 yard shot because he felt unsure. This year we put in lots of range time and shot a lot of 200 yard targets and banged the 300 yard gong 10 ot so times each trip. It paid off. Today he dropped a 65incher @ 288 yards. The 243 did a number on him. I will post some pictures when I get off this hill. Awesome day!

That's AWESOME. A bow kill is the best! Thanks for sharing. Congrats to all!!!

I bought him the 243 when he was 6yo. My wife told me it was too early. She was right, but don't tell her that. He started shooting it when he was 9. He shoots it off with a Harris bi-pod and this year we bought the CLAW. He is a small kid and with the CLAW he also shoots his 308. We are going back after pigs tomorrow. FYI, you can see that he wears hiking gators, they are a little noisy while walking thru the brush, but because he is so small we can't find leather boots that go up high enough to keep the stickers out of his socks. The gators have been a lifesaver.

The 270 reduced recoil would be great for a kid. IMO

I got my 10 year old son a Remington Mod Seven in .308. He has been shooting the Rem Reduced recoil loads for the last 2 years. I love the 308. Wide range of ammo, easy to find if you forget your ammo at home. Just sayin. But between those 2 calibers I'd go with 243.

The road around the inside of the Post wasn't too bad the last time I drove it. Are you trying to get near Rogers Lake?

What weird stuff have you glassed or happen well glassing for game?
cactusjack replied to seek100plus's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
A couple of years later I was hunting on Camp Navajo and met a Customs Agent who worked the Naco crossing. We were talking about wierd things found while hunting and he started telling me about "the find" on the Bisbee Tunnel. I informed him that I was in the party that found that mess. He told me that we didnt want to know what was on those cameras, but he did say that the scene wasn't a rape site. It was more of a freak show involving a confused person. ( Sorry about the story Amanda, I'm trying to keep it clean) It still gives me the creeps!!! -

I was hunting with my brother and nephew down near Bisbee on top of the tunnel. We hiked up and found a creepy site with lots of ladies clothing torn up, an empty half gallon Wesson bottle, and Vaseline smeared on trees. There were 3 or 4 disposable cameras and a book with all sorts of pics of sex acts and stories. We called the cops and took them to the "site". -
What do you think of this terrain...?
cactusjack replied to Hunter1432's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I think I know that place. Lots of traffic. +2 on get away from the road. -
Pics sent.

I'm glad to see that we all agree to disagree. Count me on the list of right handed/left dominate shooters. I do quite well closing one eye or smudging my shooting glasses just a tad to switch my eye. I would have changed to a left handed bow, but with a bad shoulder it isn't an option. I say start him out with a Left handed bow, then he wont have to come up with tricks to fix the problem. Just sayin....

Carrying a side arm while bow hunting?
cactusjack replied to king4wd's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
I called Game and Fish a couple of years ago and spoke with the LEO on duty. He told me it is legal to carry a self defense type pistol while bow hunting. Barrel length under 6 inches and no scope. Don't take my word for it, but I carry my snubbie Smith 357 (scandium hand smasher), and hope it never gets used. -
I had the Leica 77 but never carried it because it was HUGE!! Now I have the 62. i love the Size and how light it is. Just sayin.
