I always use a 3 lb box of table salt on areas I'm expecting Coues. If its elk country, I will hike in 50 lb bags of water softener salt and split it in half between potential spots. If the salt is too concentrated, the Coues will pass on it until it dispersed in the soil more.

Telephoto Lens Options
AntlerObsession posted a topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
I purchased a Canon T2i last year as well as a 55mm-250mm lens for wildlife photography. It has been an amazing improvement in the quality of photos I can take, and has really helped me more consistently record my experiences in the wilderness. However, there have been times where I didn't feel like the lens I have gets me as close as I want to be. I have been researching online, and it seems that Canon produces a telephoto zoom lens I might be interested in: EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM. Will this be enough zoom to satisfy me on a subject 600 yds away? How much closer will this put me than my current lens? Do they make a zoom lens that will get closer than a 400mm lens? Or do I would I be better satisfied with a fixed telephoto lens, like the EF 400mm f/4 DO IS USM? Is this the direction I would want to go because of the increased light-gathering capacity? I know there are aftermarket lenses, like Sigma, but I'm not sure if I would be satisfied with the clarity. Any personal experience with these lenses would be appreciated! -

Thank you for the comparison. I have an idea now of what I need to do to take acceptable photos. Get closer! -
I can't imagine that being a very good place to make a permanent settlement. It seems so exposed to the elements. I wonder if it was used as a last resort defensible position. I way be completely wrong, too!

I have never been impressed with digiscoped photos. I have digiscoped with a Swaro 20-60x80 and to say I was disappointed would be an understatement. Sure, they get you close, but the distortion, to me, is unbearable. I don't think they compare even to my 55mm-250mm, though I do have to zoom in digitally. Pixman, I appreciate your offer to let me look through your lens, and I do agree that a fixed lens would seem to limit one's options. I guess what I need to decide is if the difference between my 55-250 and the 100-400 is enough to throw down $1,600. -
I have been caught! What a pleasant surprise to have you visit the neighborhood, Amanda! You will have to stop and say 'hi' the next time you come by!

I am lucky enough to have an archery range/3d course 4 minutes from my house. I go 2-3 a week, but I at least make sure to do reps pulling the bow back and holding it. I also try to mix in some possible scenarios by getting my heart rate/breathing up by running a minute or 2, and then taking some shots. It helps me to know how long my recovery is should I be hiking in the hills or stalking in and need to be able to shoot.

My parents have a cabin near Silverton, and I can say that I have had countless opportunities to harvest a legal bull. Were those bulls what I was after? Not that day. . . I'm hoping they grow a few more years! The nature of the OTC tags is the same wherever you go: the animals are there, but your chances of success increase exponentially the more homework you do. Will there be bulls? Yes. Will you have opportunities on legal bulls? I would say probably! Will there be 350" bulls? Maybe, but they do require a lot of homework. Will it be worth it? Definitely!!

How well does corn do? Hot long does a bag last? I've always been afraid I'd just end up with fatter squirrels.

Desert Schools is very professional, and their culture is personable as well.

Motoxno, What unit/season did you get drawn for? I'm headed up for a combo MD/Bull Archery hunt.

I probably would have sprayed that bear a lot sooner! It looked like it was more than enough to deter the bear from coming any closer!

I'm the exact opposite! Scouting for a Mule deer hunt up near Silverton, I came across this pretty bull and got him on camera 5 times in 3 weeks! I had all these plans to go hunt him during the archery season and I was drawn for early AZ archery. Maybe he can add 15"-20" by next year! The scenery is worth the trip by itself!!! -
