Mule Deer tastes like what it eats. In the sage, it tastes like sage. In the junipers, it tastes like juniper. I can tell you there was a Huge taste difference in the buck I shot at 4,000' and the one I shot at 12,000'. Different diet, lifestyle, water quality/quantity. The 12000' buck was the best tenderloin I have EVER had.

What weird stuff have you glassed or happen well glassing for game?
AntlerObsession replied to seek100plus's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
This thread needs a bump! Great stuff! We were in Unit ## glassing during the late archery hunt, and we saw 2 crows and a hawk fighting back and forth. Well, apparently, one of the crows stole whatever "food" from the hawk, and took off. He made it about 200 yds before the hawk caught up to him. Well, the crow got scared and dropped the mouse/rabbit/carcass/whatever, and went into evasive maneuvering. The hawk, from about 20 yds back, immediately dropped into a nose dive and caught the food out of the air just before it hit the ground. He had to have been going 70 mph! It was a heck of a catch! -
There was a pair on a different website that has something to do with monster muleys.

Vortex Viper HD 15x50 vs. Kaibab HD 15x56
AntlerObsession replied to kazpilot25's topic in Optics and tripods
I was up on the mountain with my Bro-in-law, my kaibabs and his swaros, and we compared side by side. The deer in the middle of the FOV were the same clarity. However, there was a slight fuzziness immediately around the edge of the kaibabs when focused out further than 800yds. Also, there was a clear coloration difference. The swaros gave the colors a whiter hue, while the kaibabs were more of a bluish hue. Probably not noticeable when youre glassing, but evident side by side. Just my observations. Swaros aren't worth it to me, and he was brave enough to admit the difference wasn't worth it to him. My $.02 -
We headed out as a family to our favorite spot on the river, and my wife noticed some white crust on some sand near a rocky bluff. She speculated that it could be salt, but I thought,"No Way!", so I tasted it. Oh come on! You know I had to! Anyway, it was salt, and I found that the entire cliff face had salt deposits exuding from cracks, settling on ledges, etc. Has anyone ever seen this before? Those of you that frequent the river, is this a common thing having the water deposit minerals onto the cliff face, or is this a natural salt deposit that is a part of the geology in that area? Could it be a natural attraction to animals? We work so hard to place salt licks, would a natural salt lick/deposit be a good place to find a concentration of animals? I don't know, maybe eating white stuff growing off the side of a river has me a little loopy!

You can get a guest hunting license for him. I believe they are available at any G&F office. They don't cost anything, and they are good for 3 days. Applies to predator and small game hunting. A good option to introduce someone to hunting.

The camp next to mine found a dead 8x8 bull in Unit 1. I'm sure whomever shot it would love to claim it before G&F auctions it.

Does anyone use horn hunters main beam pack.?
AntlerObsession replied to oz31p's topic in Other Hunting Gear
I just bought the main beam and love it! It has tons of room and straps, clips and zippers/pockets in all the right places and sizes. Bow/rifle, tripod, chair, spotting scope... All have their place with plenty of cargo room for binos, jackets, food and everything else. -
Congratulations on an epic hunt! Colorado High Country Hunts are so rewarding: the views, the effort and the opportunities on multiple bucks make for unforgettable hunts! It gives you opportunities to do the most fun parts of hunting. Find lots of animals, plan the stalk, execute and celebrate!! What a buck!

I know an old rancher that owns 19 sections near New Mexico in Unit 27 that is considering selling. If you're truly interested, I could ask him for information.

Get up early, listen to where they are at, and get where they are going, which is usually high.

Sharing the Wealth
AntlerObsession replied to Non-Typical Solutions's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
Forest Service pleads that people not feed wildlife. "If fed, animals will become dependent and incapable of fending for themselves." Forest Service understands the consequences of "free hand-outs." Why can't the Democratic party? -
Just got back from 27, saw about 25 bulls Saturday night, all of them were screaming and the smaller ones were fighting. The big bulls didn't come down until almost dark but wanted to so bad! They'd just sit on the ridge and scream! There wasn't a road we drove where we didn't hear bugles. They aren't coming into a call yet, but they're getting ready to!

What clothing do you wear in blind during august?
AntlerObsession replied to couesdeerhntr's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Birthday suit? I will be forever scarred with that thought... What do you sit on? Do you throw it away after every ... hour? Those are not something you want second servings of! -
They got the bull they had almost given up on! 8x7 from the pic I got. Congrats to CK. A beast bull.
