Colorado San Juan Mountains
AntlerObsession replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Non-hunting trip reports
Have you been up the Porphyry gulch road? A family favorite that has beautiful scenery! -
Would wolves be able to get through the gate panel? Could be for sheep, just depends on where its at. Or goats.
-
Those 50 lb. coyotes were shot weighing 30 lbs and gained weight every step it needed hauled out!
-
Haha. Hilarious!

Hard to find a more beautiful stretch of country! We have a cabin about 20 minutes outside of Ouray that we vacation at. Absolutely breathtaking scenery!

Unit 27, 28 Advice
AntlerObsession replied to AzHuntingAddict's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
What are the hunt dates? What rifle are you shooting? Where are you traveling from? What kind of shape are you in? Let us know all the information you have and let's see if we can build on that. -
Guess the Score Contest!

118 0/8. Did I win? -
Generally, they're beetles that are attracted by organic material that has lasted through the taxidermy process. They are generally more attracted by mounts in the velvet, or mounts that are difficult to get completely clean, but will move to all the available mounts. The best way to get rid of the buggers is to freeze them out, whether you do all your mounts or just the ones that show symptoms. So, if you have a deep freezer, give it a couple days in there and you should be good to go.

Mearns are getting wet...
AntlerObsession replied to scoutm's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
I live here in Mesa, but I can tell you its not the town I have my weather notifications set up for. And I can tell you I love the little black rain clouds solid through my 5-day forecast. Puts a whitetail hunting smile to my face! :D -
Didn't even know they had those.

What a monster! That's a Kansas WT right?
-
My father-in-law lives in Springerville and has taken some monsters out of those areas. I agree that the area has gotten harder to hunt in recent years, but there are still bucks in there worth going after. BTW, make sure you have your predator call when you scout. Coyotes are too plentiful!

"When I have a tag in my pocket, I'm actively persuing them at all times during open season." +1

I just had the head gaskets worked on by a mechanic who is a friend of mine. It was overheating and running hot and eventually ruined the motor. There are different levels of damage you can do to a motor. From blowing head gaskets, to throwing a rod, or cracking the block. It could be a $600 fix or it could be a $2k overhaul or replacement. Its important to have a professional look at it, though he might not know exactly what needs done until he actually gets the motor opened up to check the parts for damage. My friend works in Mesa, and could look at it. He could at the very least let you know exactly what your options are.

My father-in-law received a cow tag last year he hadn't put in for. He didn't have any bonus points so he accepted the tag, but would have made a big deal about it if he had some BPs to lose.

You know you're addicted to coues when.....

...You have a baby the same day the draw comes out, and when your friends and family call to wish you congratulations, you think they are referring to the WT tag you drew. Just happened yesterday! -
I'll take cookies and milk to the Mesa office!

Great finds, but the picture of your daughter is a priceless treasure. She is absolutely adorable!

Just another terrible day in the mountains

Great pics! I like the "cows"! Where was the fire at? Have they gotten it under control? -
I'm a new-ish member who is just getting the nerve to post a little. This buck I shot this last August with my PSE Bruin at 25 yards quartered away. A Spot and Stalk to about 70 yrds and a lot of loose rocks between us still. I watched him for about an hour before he stood up and stretched his legs. Effectively keeping bushes in between me and himm he worked down towards me and came within about 15 yards but it wasn't until he was passed me that I had a shot. He measured 31" outside width, but I havent scored him completely yet as he had been at the taxidermist. IDK but he should be around 200" gross. I know the pics with my camera phone dont do him justice, but it was a late night boning him out and getting back to my truck. Thanks for letting me share!!

Do you have pics of the scope and tripod? What are their weights? How high does the tripod go?
-
What a cool Antler configuration! They probably would have had another 3"+ if they hadn't hit each other. I'm going to guess 85". What are the dimensions of the bricks behind it?
-
That's the exact reason why I can't hunt tree stands! I'd get so excited I'd fall out if I ever saw anything.
