    Talkin about MONSTER MX Coues

Saddest story I've ever heard! The 2nd saddest story is the 130" buck that was taken that same hunt that had less than 2 lines said about it.

    2 more dogs

How did those VMax perform? I just bought some hoping they would drop bigger dogs but not damage smaller varmints too badly. How were the exit wounds? Did they tear up the fur at all?

What an awesome find! That's really cool. I think there is a pinned thread on hieroglyphs and Indian ruins you could post that on and see some other cool finds.

    It has been bugging me…

If we had ethical people, we wouldn't need laws for everything. If we had laws for everything, we wouldn't need ethical people. I agree 100% with CnSheep. If we don't educate each other, and learn what an ethical shot for ourselves is (everyone's is unique), we may have gov't officials telling us how far we can shoot. Can you imagine some biologist examining our game, and determining if the shot was too far, too low, too far back, and throwing citations at us for misplaced shots? I would hate to give those treehuggers any ideas, but we do have to be careful! Maybe I should delete this before I give them any ideas...

Hot do I kill this beast

Dont they just make a big loop so he will be back? I havent seen a comprehensive documentary on mt. lions, but I watched a National Geographic 3-part documentary on snow leopards on YouTube. I HIGHLY recommend it. Couldn't stop watching it... Anyway, I learned a lot about large cat habits especially in relation to their home range. There is controversy as to the actual size of home ranges, with estimates from 10 sq mi (3mi x 3.5mi) to 300 sq mi (15mi x 20mi), but it for sure varies according to prey density. The documentary illustrates how cats will have bordering, with some overlap, with other cats home ranges, and marking posts, with which they can coordinate the intervals at which a cat visits an area. In other words, they space themselves out so as not to mess up others' hunting efforts, along with maximizing the opportunity for their own hunts by not following to closely to another cat. They don't want to have to stalk on freaked out herds and wary animals any more than we want to hunt spooked, pressured animals. It was really interesting. Unfortunately, he'll be back. When? Who knows but if there are a lot of deer and water, and no other cats on your camera, it might be sooner rather than later.

    Coyote

This artical might help. It seems that dogs, and thus coyotes, see nature colors, browns and greens, as blues and whites, respectively. This article claims orange looks like tan to them. To us, tan is a perfectly natural color, while dogs see this "tan", a color not very common at all in nature, and may freak out at this strange color. I would say they can see your orange hat, and know its unnatural. just my $.01. http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/canine...dogs-see-colors

    Stainless barrel on blue action?

+1 on the SS Krieger. If you're in the valley, Steve Crooks is a great gunsmith who does his work out of Chandler/Mesa. I've been amazed time and time by what he knows about rifles. A great guy to talk to, also! I'm sure he would love to answer any questions you might have. Try him @ 480.491.1770.

    backpacking hunts

Good advice. I think most guys spend most of their planning efforts concentrating on what gear to bring and generally don't give the food much thought. It's imperative that you replenish your body with the proper nutrients each day and throughout the day. Water is obvious, but the carbs, proteins and calories are equally important. I have never regretted taking too much food or water, but I have looked at my packing list anbd found plenty of things I will never actually use. I also like having a fanny pack for little things I dont want to have to take my whole pack off to get: granola bars, headlamps, gloves, knives, notepad, map, rangefinder, GPS, etc.

    Bobcat on the Rocks!

Wanted to share the story and some pics of my bobcat I shot near Springerville, AZ. We had seen quite a few coyotes in this particular area, and it seemed promising for sure. I headed out solo on Thursday morning, with my trusty Rem 6mm, and FoxPro Spitfire in tow. I made a few treeline stands overlooking the vast grasslands that are typical of the area, and didn't have any luck. As I made my way back to the highway, I decided I had time for one more call, but wanted to see if a little hiking might put me in a more successful calling position. I got up into these small rocky canyons and found a good spot that put me out on a point overlooking a long, narrow valley scattered with red boulders. I set up the call on a small boulder 6 feet in front of me along with a custom decoy made by my good buddy JT, a carbon arrow that fits inside of an aluminum arrow, which you can slide and adjust length according to your needs, with 3 turkey feathers tied to the arrow knock with fishing string. A marvel of engineering! All of which fits into a 1"x12" PVC Pipe for compact easy storage. Maybe I'll throw a picture and a plug for JT's awesome turkey feather decoy! I got settled in, prepped my firearm, and started up the Cottontail in Distress on my Spitfire. I tried to draw them in with some volume adjustments, on 2 mins., off 30 sec. At about 8 minutes into the call, I shut her down completely, just letting the decoy do its dancing. As I am about to start her up again, this master of stalk and stealth comes out from behind one of the small boulders right at my very feet (about 7 feet away) and slowly creeps up to my caller. As it sniffs at my feather decoy, I take the opportunity to shoulder my gun, but just as I do, he turns and stares right at me. Had to have been at least 20 seconds with me thinking," Why isn't he running?","Will he run if I move?","Is he going to do anything?" Finally, I couldn't take the suspense anymore, and I slowly brought the rifle up and got him in my scope, with him never moving, just... staring. He was so close, I had to do the double and triple check to make sure I was seeing the right scope-full of fur befored I let her rip, and dropped him right there. 7 feet away. Oh, and here is the custom decoy that brought that cat within inches of the call, and within a few feet of me.
