What units have huntable populations of coues deer?
crazyaboutcoues replied to Flash's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in New Mexico
16 and 17 have coues deer in isolated areas. -
Went out dove and quail hunting on Saturday. We limited out on dove and Gabe took his first quail double over Jazz's point. We bought Jazz from Jim Johnson and she has not only been a great family dog but an awesome hunting dog as well...

Jason just resized them for me...thanks guys for offering. We left Saturday and drove six hours and stayed the night in Tumcumcari just to take a little of the edge off the 15 hour drive. We arrived in Osbourne KS the next day about 4pm thier time. We were pretty exited to have a 5 days worth of hunting ahead of us. The first day we pheasent hunted and both my son and I had our limites by noon. We had a cool looking full moon, I just had enough light for a pic... The second day we killed three birds but we had to cut it short because we have to get a few things done before opening day for deer. Third was the opening day of deer season and my son took his first eastern Whitetail. He made a 300 yard shot which the locals thought was unreal . I never got a good shot at a decent buck so I went home with tag soup, but a now friend of mine from Phoenix killed this buck on the last day I was there he is a member of CWT so he'll probably chime in. What a beast. I took this pic on the last evening, makes a pretty cool back ground. Can't wait to do it again

We gotter done one more time, this time Gabriel (my youngest son) scored on the first rifle opener. He shot this buck at 100 yards about 1.5 miles from the nearest road. Here's Gabe on the last leg of the death walk he took to get this buck back. This is what a worn out boy looks like after carring his first coues deer 1.5 miles up and down two ridges, good job kid!!! Daddy had the hard job of carrying back his gun and giving him water when he needed it.

We went six for six at the Maldonado camp. This one was the biggest in camp, I green scored him at 106. This the crew after the second day I killed a 3x2 yesterday and took pictures with my other camera where the files are to big to post here. I'll figure how to down size it and post it later. My other buddy took a 160 class muley on the first day, once he sends me the pix i'll post them as well. Here's the story on my buck. It was the third day of the hunt and the rest of the camp had already tagged out, no pressure . I headed up to a water hole that was almost dry but the deer were still hitting it off and on. The bad thing about this hole is that it's right off a dirt road in a high traffic area. I got there about 7am and settled in. About an hour later I heard noise from up above me and I knew that the moment was at hand. My heart started to let me know that it was still there . As the sound got closer, disappointment kicked in when I saw a cow headed to the tank, then another, then another. I had eight cows in the water not less than 30 yards away. I figured they would drink and leave but no dice. They started feeding and one even laid down. Then I hear fourwheelers coming which of course made me happy The guys drove to the tank and took a nap on thier wheelers . I decided to check out another tank about 3/4 of a mile up a giant ridge where there were no roads. About an hour and a half later I'm standing over a bone dry tank . So now what it's about 11:00 and the sun is pretty freaking hot. So I headed back down the ridge back to the original tank, about 40 minutes later i'm approaching the tank and what do you know. There is my buck standing about 30 yards from my blind. I made an off hand shot at about 80 yards, once the smoke cleared I saw another smaller buck looking my way wondering what just happen, I also heard two other deer run to my left. It took me about 3 minutes to load my gun, for some reason my hands were shaking and couldn't get the powder to fall in the barrel (must have been cold ). Finally I got the thing loaded but by then I couldn't see any deer. I still didn't know if I hit the buck I shot at. As I walked towards where the buck was I saw good blood and knew that he was hit pretty hard. I turned to the blind and there he lay not two steps from where I sat that morning...Good thing about it is I didn't have to carry him out ten miles back to the road.

I've bought two turrets from kenton industries, one for my 30.06 and one for my .243. They make an OK product, but if you have a Leopold scope it is best to send them the scope and have them make the turret to your load. Leopold turrets are way better than the ones you buy from kenton industries. If you have a different scope then I would go with KI but not with Leopold...
