    Cole Does it again

Here's the story First day we went to the same point that Cole took his Coues two years ago hoping to find one of those big boys that got away from us. Unforunately we only saw a decent two point and Cole passed on him saying he wanted one at least the same size or bigger then the last one. We went over another ridge with no luck. Bob and I started talking about the evening plan and he mentioned that Cole hadn't taken a muledeer yet, so we decided to hunt Muledeer that evening. We headed back to camp to have lunch and a nap at 3:00 we headed back to a good mule deer area. The day was really hot and it didn't cool down until around 5:00pm. We walked in about 1/2 mile and started glassing. We picked up a very nice 4 point about 1000 yards away but it was to late to try to make a move on him so we just watched him feed away. We also glassed up more does but the evening hunt was pretty much over. On the way back to camp Bob and I made a game plan for the morning hunt. Lets take a Muledeer! Second morning had us on a high point that over looked miles of rolling hills. Bob glassed up five muledeer does and three Coues does. I picked out several does on a different ridge but no bucks. We decided to still hunt because the morning was overcast and it would stay cool longer. We topped over another ridge and I spotted five does and a buck. The buck had four points on one side and three on the other. I asked Cole if he wanted to take him and he said no we have plenty of time to find a better one . Now I have to admit, I was surprised that he would pass on a buck like that having never taking one and only being 13 years old, so we pressed on. We went over three more ridges when Bob spotted a buck about 500 yards away feeding towards us. After seeing him I knew right away the Cole wasn't going to take him. He was a small 2x3. Bob on the other hand was trying to convince Cole that that wasn't a bad first buck. But Cole wasn't having it. I told the guys, lets go down there a take a better look. We started down the ridge and I picked up the buck again at about 300 yards. Now Bob's really trying to get Cole to take him. I even chimed in tellin Cole that it's a good fist buck, but Cole had made up his mind. While Bob and Cole were discussing the situation a new player arrived at the scene. A very good 4x3 (nine point) walked right thru my field of view. I immediately told Cole that we had a shooter. And this time we didn't give Cole a chance to pass him up . We got the stoney point shooting sticks in position. But Cole was a little to short to get a good shot, so we had to move into a better position. We slowly walked to the left, nope to brushy, we worked our way to the right and finally we got an open lane. Cole set up for the shot, he asked me which way the buck was facing and I told him that he was quartering away to put the cross hairs just in front of the hinds. Cole decided to wait until the buck was perfectly broadside. Good Call!!! Cole touched it off and made a solid hit. The buck was still moving so Bob told Cole to put another one in him. The second shot put him down for good. Cole shot was 254 yards with his trusty .243, for 13 years of age this boy can shoot. Congrats again Cole

Why is it weird to count all the points and call a muledeer a black tail? A mule deer has a black tail?????? The buck does have ten points???????? We call a cows deer a cooze deer. Why do AZ boys call a buck that has ten total points a four point? Now that's weird. He he...It's funny...when I talk with my AZ buddies I call them four points or four by threes. When I talk with my family or NM buddies I call it a ten pointer. In Northern NM they call them a 5x5.

  19. MY .02 Here in NM...your chances of finding any tank that doesn't have an old ground blind is pretty tough especially in the Gila. I have three ground blinds and one treestand that I spent alot of time setting up for my Elk hunt this next week. There is no way I'll be hunting every blind every day. If I get to a tank and find someone sitting in the blind that I built, i'm SOL, I should have gotten there sooner. But if someone is sitting in my treestand that's a different story. I feel that the treestand is my property and another hunter has no business sitting in it. He is welcome to build a ground blind and sit the water hole no problem. But his arse better not be on my treestand. "and that's all I have to say about that" Forest Gump Good hunting all
