if your kid don't wanna go huntin', make em go. grab em by the ear and drag em if you have to. they are "your" kid. at least until they're 18. you need to make em go fishin' too. and hikin' and campin'. if your kid don't wanna go huntin' then they don't need video games and junk like that either. and all boys need to play football, unless they have some physical thing that keeps em from it. football too, not that sissy soccer game they like to call football. like i said, i don't bait, but some of those that belong to the same club as me do. (the fraternal and holy order of the hunter) so therefore i support all the memebers of the club. don't let one more of our freedoms be legislated away in order to make some anti happy. the cwd arguement is pure BS. i don't care how they slice that one. Lark.

i ain't no baiter. don't need to. some guys are masters at it tho. but if it's legal, it's ok with me. again, legal=ethical. no need to take away anything from ourselves. the antis, usfs and azgfd are always willing to do that for us. if you don't like to bait, don't. same as guys that don't like longrange, bows, rifles, pistols, dogs, whatever. everyone needs to stick together and not fight amongst ourselves. to me, it's a non issue. i will make a prediction tho, if guys continue to get stupider about it, i.e. electronic corn flingers, fighting over places to bait, things like that, it will be outlawed. same thing happend to bear baiting. they outlawed it to keep some morons from shooting each other. Lark.

there isn't a unit in Az that i haven't hunted at one time or another. my dad is 83, walks with 2 canes, can't go more than maybe a couple hundred yards. he hunts where he can get to and gets a buck most years. when you're that old, it doesn't matter what kinda access you have. your age and physical shape are what dictates what you do. sucks to get old, but if you're lucky you get to. i'm getting limited in where i go and what i do and i'm quite aways from 80 still. when my kids were 10 they went wherever i did. i'd let up a little and not go some of the places i might normally go, but they got a full dose of the mountains from day one. now they wait for me and help me punk my stuff out. there is always a way around. if you're rugged enough to make the trip. i know guys that hunt the galluro wilderness from the san pedro side. using greedy landowners as a reason to complain doesn't hold any water in Az. i hunt units in colorado that every square foot is private land and always find a way get access to plenty of land to hunt and have never paid a trespass fee. it's just how you go about things. whining because someone is fortunate enough to own a bunch of land and doesn't want you on it doesn't help anything. either go around or go someplace else. Az has more accessable public land than any place i know of. but i still agree that sportsmen need to be good stewards and do what they can to sweet talk landowners into allowing access. calling someone greedy doesn't accomplish anything constructive. if you want to hunt a particular place bad enough you'll find a way to get in there, if it's public land. i've spent many a mile on ol' shank's mare with a freighter frame on my back or on horseback leading pack animals to get to where i wanted to be. seldom was it because of a greedy landowner. it was because that was where i wanted to be and i was willing to put out the effort and work it took to get there. Lark.

two-seven-dee, two-seven-dee, two-seven-dee. well, actually anything but a 7mm/08 is ok. Lark.

i'm still healin' up from the last time i hunted 22n. and that was 3 years ago. i have some photos of a bull my boy shot that you could mix up with yours and not tell em apart. that brushy, waitaminute bush infested, hack saw oak choked, manzanita growed unit sure is fun. just make sure your blood level is up, because ya sure bleed a lot. Lark.

trophy hunting probably doesn't hurt much. i used to consider myself one, when i could still get around real good. trophy hunters are a different story. a few guys really harm everyone else with high profile stupidity. shooting elk in subdivisions. stretching and breaking the laws. flooding the field with a bunch of "guides" to keep an eye on a particular animal until a rich guy with an auction tag can fly in on his personal jet, drive out and shoot it, take some pictures with the dozen or so lackeys and toadys he had to hire to keep from sweatin', and go home. stacking up the draw with thousands of nonresident applicants. certain outfitters providing really poor service to the nonresidents that do get a tag. states having to make and change laws to keep outfitters from using airplanes and chute planes and other things that are not sporting and shouldn't be used by sportsmen in the first place. and states having to spend million$ to defend against lawsuits by outfitters who think they deserve more than joe hunter. stuff like that provides a lot of easy ammo for antis to use. and they do use it and it works. and where is all this private land owned by greedy landowners in Az? been hunting here for 50 years and i have never not hunted someplace because some greedy landowner wouldn't let me. if i couldn't get access i would go around. it's all part of hunting. it's called work. hunting is hard work if you do it right. Az doesn't have enough private land to keep anyone from hunting any unit in the state. and there is more than enough public land to hunt. if you are letting a greedy landowner keep you from hunting, you're just lazy. Lark.

the azgfd ceased to be a wildlife management agency and became an accouting firm many years ago. they manage wildlife for $$, not for wildlife conservation. what bill says here is true. kids aren't being introduced to the outdoors in ways that get and keep them interested in it. i think the "video game" society has a lot to do with it. it's a lot easier to live in a make believe world and never leave the couch. not just for kids either. too many folks just don't go outside. i know one thing that i've noticed is that you never seem to have a "positive" experience with azgfd officers. they always start the 20 questions routine and act like you've done something wrong and they just need to figure out what it was. a young lady i know shot a bull on the late hunt in u1 last season. a day or so after she got it a couple wardens were in their camp and accused her of tagging an elk someone else shot. with no real reason to even think it. they finally left, but i kinda doubt she'll go hunting again. it was her first hunt for anything. she was real excited about getting a bull. but after that she was really pessimistic about the whole thing. i can't remember the last time i had what i would call a positive experience with a game warden or forest ranger. even if you're just sitting in camp not doing anything in particular, it seems like they look at everyone like you're a criminal that hasn't been caught yet. i doubt that this is the main reason for the drop in outdoor participation, but it is one thing that the azgfd and usfs have some control over that they could do a lot better job on. congratulate someone for a change instead of going to the 20 question deal. there are a lotta reasons on all sides that hunting and angling are declining and all sides have some blame, or credit, if you're an anti. some are big reasons, some are little reasons, but they all add up. cleaning up a bunch of the little reasons would be pretty easy to do and would be a big help. Lark.

it's like bill says. you have coues whitetail and eastern whitetail and that's it. Lark.

they're worthless, but i'll give ya $500 for it sight unseen. just cuz i'm a nice guy. one thing to think of is the fact that the last one was made 47 years ago and they ain't never gonna make another one. and every rifle made since the model 70 was introduced has tried to say they were as good. they are and always will be the gold standard of bolt action rifles. they are a very fine rifle and everyone of them was very well made from really good material. an uncut standard grade in decent shape is worth a minimum of a grand. most guys want over a grand just for an action. featherweights, supergrades, africans, alaskans, westerners, featherweight supergrades, are all worth starting at about twice that and going up from there. that might be a little high for a standard featherweight, but not much. some calibers are really worth a lot too. 250/3000, 22 hornet, argenting mauser, .358 win, some of those calibers are almost priceless. a beat up one is worth thousands. if i was ever gonna sell one i'd ask the guy what he'd give me for it and then either double or triple it, just so he wouldn't buy it and i would still have it. if you ever get a real model 70, don't sell it. if you do sell it, sell it to me. and then i'll groin kick ya so ya won't forget what a mistake you made. Lark.

.264 Winchester Mag loads?
.270 replied to 40-year-AZ-hunter's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
.264's get real twist sensitive when you start using the longer bullets. most of them aren't twisted fast enough for long bullets, like the bergers. if you load it right and don't hurt the barrel, they can be incredibly accurate and they flat smoke across the prarie. i just shoot 100 grain hornady interlocks out of mine, with h4831sc powder. i like the velocity and they shoot real accurate. work great on anything up to deer. haven't shot an elk with a 100 grainer. my boy shoots 130 grain swift sirroccos out of his and loves em. he also shoots h4831. he killed that big bull this last year with it. the sirroccos really hold up well. he never could make the bergers hit out of his rifle. barrel twist is a little slow for that long of a bullet. the length of the bullet has more to do with twist requirement than the weight. if you decide it's too much trouble i'll take that westerner off your hands for you. one thing to remember, is to keep your barrel from getting too hot. .264's have a reputation of smoking barrels, and they will. they aren't any worse than any other small bore, high powder capacity cartridge, but they will burn out on you. i've burned up a couple. just be smart and it should last a long time. and if your model 70 is an uncut, in good shape westerner, don't mess it up. leave it original or sell it to me and get a new rifle you can mess up. it is a sin to cut up, or rebarrel or in anyway molest a model 70. especially a westerner. Lark. -
that was the story i heard pretty much. seemed like there were multiple jags tho. a mounted one and a hide. it's been a long time since i even heard anything about it, but it seemed i was told that they were fined a fair amount, but they never paid it. seems like they did lose some stuff like a pickup and a trailer too. a guy told me the same 2 guys have a ranch in new mex now and are up to shenanagins there now. i have the wrong kinda memory. i remember stuff, but not all of it. or just the good parts. the klumps are legendary as far as ignoring the law or thinking it pertains to them.

if you think you know took it beat his a s s until you know one way or the other. if he's the kinda guy that you might suspect, he's got it comin' anyway. use pliers or a little propane plumbers torch. they're better than sodium penathol or hypnotism. the torch stinks a little tho. Lark.

interesting article. i didn't know he got hammered twice. according to the article he is 96 now? i think i know who the guy in the other story is. funny story too. that guy died a couple years ago. i wonder how they got all them jags across the border? there was another high profile jag case a few years ago involving one of the klumps from bowie and some taxidermist. but i was told that after the initial bust it never went anywhere. it had undercover fbi guys, bighorn sheep killin' with no permits, jags, ocelots, margays, lacey act stuff, state lines and everthing too. Lark.

nope, i'm still in halifax. i get a minute or 2 ever once in awhile and i look at this thing. glad to hear curtis is still kickin'. i only met him a ocuple times. he did get in a bunch of trouble i guess. that was decades before i met him. he went to i think beliz after that because he couldn't get a license here for awhile. he knew what he was doing with hounds and from the little i got to pick his brain, i learned a lot. he like to use "power" dogs. tough, mean dogs that could get a bear or a lion by the tail and make him go up a tree. i didn't know he'd done the deal with the jags. i'd always heard it was lions that he had caught and kept caged until he got a hunter. whatever, that was a long time ago. i've known of several guys that would do the same thing. at least one of them got busted for it too. one of the funniest stories i ever heard was about a deal like that. i'm doing ok up here. sorta cold, and never gets warm. snows at least a little every day. having a lot of fun and enjoying doing something i'm good at again. later, Lark.

i want a shirt that says my 2nd favorite team is whoever is playing the piggsburg squeelers. what a nice game to watch. Lark. -
seems like someone said he died recently. i mighta dreamed it too. last i knew for sure he lived in young. north side of the little town some, on the east side of the road. there was sign advertising his guide service on the side of the road. last time i was there i don't recall seeing the sign tho. he did move to south america for some time and guided a lot of jag hunters. hunter wells went down there with him. and he did get in trouble up here. but he was a very good lion and bear hunter. Lark.

so i'm up here in halifax nova scotia, eh. been here 2 weeks and it ain't been (or bean, that's how these guys say been) above freezin' in the whole time. don't get real cold, but it never gets warm. it's nice and sunny today, and about (or aboat) 20f. 30f is the warmest it's bean. snowed about 9 out of 14 days. not too much. aboat a foot, or 30 cm, one time. several inches some other times. this plant is aboat 100 feet from the ocean. seals and stuff in the harbor (or hawbuh). they say there is an occasional minke whale, but i ain't seen one yet. a live 2lb lobster (or lawbstuh) is about 12 bucks from a street vendor. they say they'll be down around 5 bucks when the weather gets better and catchin' em is easier. one o' the ol' pipefitters has a lobster boat and he's gonna let me be the cabin boy for a weekend, when the weather gets better. should be fun. i never lobstered before. milk is $7.50 a gallon and gas is only $1.26. but that's per litre. hopefully we'll still be here when the atlantic salmon start to run too. seen a few whitetail run right through the plantsite the other day. haven't got to do too much exploring yet, but did get out saturday for a few hours and droov about 60 kilometers outta town to some place called musquodoboit hawbuh. little lobster fishin' village. this is jungle forest when you get outta town. anyway, i'm still alive. busier than a one legged man in a butt kickin' contest. seen all about the big shooitin' in tucson. some o' these canuks are really big into gun control. but they play hockey. they say they don't like "violence" but beat others with sticks as a game. i see you knuckleheads ain't been fighting too much. maybe i'll try to keep up a little better so's as to maybe do some instigatin'. well, be good ya hosers, eh, Lark.

this ain't no trip, it's an adventure. hey jimmer, there is a guy that i have to interface with here a lot that talks just like the real jimmer negamanee. and i can understand him. man, it is cold here again this morning. this wet cold right next to the ocean really goes through your clothes. there's a buncha guys from new brunswick. most of em speak froggish tho. this is a pretty cool place. it's good to know that canada has rednecks and hillbillys too. later, eh.

what'd alla you knuckleheads get fer Christmas anyway? anything interesting? like some swaro's or a clapper or chia pet or inflatable sheep? any photos? this ol' cowboy's sweetheart done an' bought him a winchester model 12, 3 inch mag heavy duck gun. the original model 12, not the made in japan imitation. what a cool shotgun. we went to a dairy and shot pigeons to celebrate. i give my buddy a butt out tool. but i ain't gonna show the video of him usin' it. them guys at the emergency room really give him an odd look when they were' tryin' to take it out. Lark.
