when i was a kid the sparks furniture store was on the corner, before val changed the name. and next to it, in what would be same area the new building takes up, was a little grocery store a guy named Moody owned. i think he owned it and i think his name was Moody. it was a long time ago. he had a really big mounted bull elk head and giant nontypical coues in there and some other stuff too. at one time he got in a tussle with a bear and if you asked him he'd pull his pants down and show you the scars on his butt cheek. can't remember if it bit or swatted him, or both. neat old guy and man he liked to talk about huntin'. good luck with the new store. the gila valley needs a good outdoors store. elk make racket all the time. all day, every day, all year long. if you're fairly close you hear all the noises that a herd makes in normal conversation with each other. Lark.

"The Draw" and a new topic....

if there is one thing the azgfd could do to improve how they are percieved it would be to make sure folks who aren't breaking the law are able to go away with a positive outlook. they really need to work on some consistency in the way they deal with people. when they catch a poacher, run him in the dirt, who cares. but don't treat joe hunter like he's a bad guy. over the years i've seen about a half dozen game wardens go way past stupid in the way they treat folks. i did forget about a good contact i had with a warden about 5 years ago. i was elk hunting with a guy who was a mile or so away off in a canyon with another guy. i glassed up some bulls in a canyon next to the highway. the guy with the tag finally wandered back to the road and i got his attention and he ran down to where i was. i was pointing out the bulls, while we were right on the side of the highway, when a warden drove up and stopped. as he got out he said to go ahead and shoot, he'd check us later. he busted a 5x6, the guy checked his tag, said congratulations and left. i think he didn't wanna get roped into helping us punk it to the road. no law was broken. he could see the situation and just went with it. worked out good all around. but anymore i think that is the exception. when i was a kid there was a notorious jerk warden that even the other wardens hated. it was dec 31 and me and my dad were varmint calling. when we came back to the truck this jackass was there and he started telling my dad how lucky he was it wasn't a day later because he'd get a ticket for no license. really started to lecture and threaten. i bet his ears are still ringin' from what my ol' mad told him. it ain't that youngbuck. they always treat me like crap and i'm good lookin'. i haven't had what i would call a positive meeting with a azgfd or usfs guy in many years. seems like they think everyone is a criminal, they just need to figure out what it is you did wrong. last time i think was when i was fishing at crescent lake really early one spring. really nice lady game warden checked my creel and i had several really nice rainbows and brookies. she measured and weighed em and we bs'd for awhile. showed her how i was fishing. asked if she wanted to see my license and she said no. said i wouldn't be fishing in the wide open if i didnt' have one. she even gave me her card. don't know why. maybe because i am so good lookin'. maybe a half hour later another warden came by and started in like i was some kinda criminal. i told him the lady that just left was really nice and he was a jerk and asked him why. showed him her card. he just walked off and left. some guys really seem to need to express what they percieve as authority i guess. i have no problem what so ever with showing a guy my license and tag, but man i hate the 20 question deal they always seem to go into. at leasat wait until somebody does somethin' wrong. make sure the barnes and remingtons are gonna hit in the same place. there is a big difference in bullet length and usually a lot of difference in velocity. check it out close. Lark.

we got some assorted muley and whitetail tags in Az. but we do have a buncha pronghorn tags in colorado and deer and elk in new mex. i think i'll go sheep huntin' this weekend and beat all the guys that got bighorn tags. Lark.

i'm starting to wonder tj. this is getting old. they say it's once in a lifetime, but they better hurry if it's gonna be in my lifetime. crowbait, you got some good tags, but that has to be about the coolest handle ever. crowbait, i like it. Lark

a 100 gr 243 bullet is a wonderful thing. if it's a factory load the remington corelokt are hard to beat and don't cost a lot. if it's a reload i'd suggest 100 gr hornady btsp innerlocks. inexpensive and they work real well. i have an old model 600 rem in 243 that my boys killed more deer with than i can recall. it's gets used by somebody every year now. i'm glad to hear that somebody with a buncha years of applying got a sheep tag. make the most of it ebb. hunt hard and shoot a big one. they give you a month to hunt so you can. i am absolutely sick of hearing about folks with just a few years of applying getting a tag. a friend of my son's has already shot a desert and a rocky and i've been applying since before he was born. the past 4 years i've ran into guys scouting for sheep in the unit i always apply for. i've been applying for longer than all of them combined. i'm thinking bonus points don't really matter when it comes to sheep and pronghorn. the number folks with a lot of points have stacked up to where everyone has a bunch of points. my uncle finally got a pronghorn tag this year. after 50 years of applying. he's an old man on oxygen 24-7. Lark. -
hey tj, don't cornfuse me with some imposter. i'm the real .270. not no wsm. alls we got was some assorted deer tags. no sheep again. sorry @$%#&^&$*. probly some game wardens relative from outta state and no points got my tag. i've enough application fees to pay for a sheep hunt in mexico. Lark.

here's a little tip that will help anyone who likes crawdads. look at the tip of the tail. they have i think 5 "feathers" on the end of their tail. grip the middle feather and pull it straight out. the "mud" vein comes out with it, 99% of the time. that way you don't have to do the purge deal and all that. try it, it works. it even works on lobsters. we eat em by the thousands. favorite way is to pull the mud vein, boil em up until done, nice and red, in a bucket or tub or whatever, peel the tails, then either dip em in butter and chow on em that way or you can make jambalaya, which we are havin' by the way tomorrow night for dinner. (my wife found crawdad tails at walmart) or you can make tacos or burros, or a crawdad omelette, or a po'boy or whatever. Lark.

heck no, there are some things that even i won't do. i've peed on a 'lectric fence, been stun gunned jut for kicks, stuck a porkypine quill in my finger to see how hard it is to pull it out, caught a bobcat that was shot out of a tree so the hounds wouldn't tear it up, ate haggis, but fox piss gum is one deal i won't even try. another thing to do is don't eat any beans. had that mess up a stalk or 2. i have next to no experience with hunting in stands. i like to be on the ground and go to the game. Lark. -
i decided to call for the heck of it. they have a new recording that says the due to some sort of technical problems the draw was going to be "later". didn't know when. leave it up to them jokers to mess it all up. dangit. Lark.

good for you. them little babies need all the help they can get. especially this year. was it a bull or a heifer? i've cut two of them out of fences over the years. had one of em's mama get after me pretty good once while i was trying to untangle her baby, but i got it out and they trotted off. when she got to the trees she stopped and looked back, sorta like she was saying thanks. Lark.

go in there after em. if they're in the rut, especially with a bow, that's where you want em. get right in the middle of the herd where all the action is. if things get hot enough, a good one might run right by you chasing a cow or another bull. there ain't a whole lot that is more exciting. get in there and become a member of the herd. really. you can do it. if you're rifle hunting, especially if you have some snow, you can track em up an shoot em too. especially in the later seasons when the bigger bulls have left the the big herds. if you know what to look at, you can tell a bull's bed from a cow's, real easy. elk live in the thick stuff most of the time. you can hunt elk all day long, from first light until dusk. don't let the middle part of the day get away from you. Lark.

i prefer salt and pepper over it and biscuits and gravy next to it. ellk are too much fun to chase around to sit and wait on em. Lark.
