if i made at least one person grin it was worth it. too many folks that are too serious these days. when i first got Ned a cop caught him runnin' lose by where i was workin'. he got an emergency call and gave him to me and said "take this javelina to the zoo" so i did. we had so much fun the next day we went to a spring training and game and then to disneyland and 6 flags. been constant companions ever since. he barfed a lot at 6 flags. hated to even joke about givin' him up but it was worth a laugh. Lark..

the feller up at the grays peak highway yard makes a lot of tables and other furniture like this. he uses epoxy and puts different things in the epoxy. saw one the other day he made that had pieces of indian pottery in clear epoxy. looked really sharp. you can use arrow heads, peices of torqouise, coral, etc. anything that looks neat. you could even put different styles of brass and ammo or bullets in the epoxy. the epoxy will polish up to where it is real clear. i cut down a big dead black walnut off our place a couple years ago and plan on making a giant dining room table out of it. got it all slabbed out drying now. if there any cracks that develop i'll fill them with epoxy and different things like mentioned. hunted with some friends several years ago there. one shot a mid eighties net buck. really nice. saw one that looked considerably larger, but never got him. there are some access issues, but you can get around all right. the little zuni rez kinds gets in the way. you should do well. i'd make at least one trip before the season to get familiar with the area. i'd take that hunt any time. Lark.

i love it when folks fall for things. good job never killed a deer. how many guys fell for it? Lark.

that is a genuine big lion. all these jokers holdin' up them 110 pounders and claiming 160 need to look at this cat. that is a dandy. in really good shape too. looks like a big head also. be interesting to see what he scores. need to let us know. incredibly dense looking ol' tom. fine job. well done. Lark.

that particular bull was a 5x7 that grossed over 400. didn't net well because of the 5x7 deal. had 7 points over 20" long. truly an old monarch. extremely old bull. i hung another bull that was within a few pounds of this one, but didn't have near the rack. he was in the 350 range. another old whitey too. my youngest son killed one a few years ago that looked bigger than either of these. had to horseback him out, so no good way to weigh it, but i'm sure it was heavier. it scores over 400 as well and was incredibly old. Lark.

i'm sorry, guess i mis-read your question. but again, i've seen .30 cal's twisted from 1:7" to 1:20". it's a real twist sensitive caliber. a lot of .300's are twisted 1:12". they don't shoot big bullets well. when you get poor groups and are sure your barrel is in good shape, the first 2 places to look is the barrel twist and how close your bullet shoulder is to the lands. Lark.
-
.308 is .30 cal. Lark.

i've shot a lotta stuff with a .30/30. 170's are like throwing rocks. really. there ain't any way to make em perform well. way slow, don't open up well, rainbow trajectory. i'd stay 150 or less. you'll have more energy and shoot flatter. another way to look is the leverevolutions. they really perform well in everything i've seen em used in. but stick with rib shots or in the neck, if you are a marksman. lots of elk are killed with a bow. i think an ol' .30 is better than a bow. punch one in the lungs and they'll go down. Lark.
-
then that's what you oughta use. a lot of .30 cals are 1 in 12's. one thing berger does do is have a twist recomendation on the box. another thing these days is that the weight of the bullet isn't the final sayso on what twist to use. a lot of bullets made for long range stuff, like bergers, have most of the weight toward the back, with a basically empty jacket toward the front. making them a lot longer than a typical bullet of that weight. you end up needing an even quicker twist to stabilize them, than you would for a normal constructed bullet of the same weight. there have been so many improvements in rifles and components in the past few years a guy can't keep up with it all. used to be you had to spend days at the range to be able to do what almost novices can do with rifles they just bought, today. range finders, incredible balistic information, wind meters, scopes that are like they are made by magicians. it amazes me what a guy can do with a rifle today. shot after shot after shot. you still have to pay attention, but it is alot easier today. Lark.

i've been applying for Az goat for 47 years. been drawn once. 21 years ago. looks like i missed again this year. i know folks that have had 5 tags since my last one. it's a hard deal to take. but we go outta state most every year. if you want to hunt bad enough, you will. shot some really good ones too. but i'd sure like to shoot another Az goat. did get a bull elk tag today tho. that kinda lessens the sting some. Lark.

well yes i do think i remember that 'lil mace. there's been so many they kinda run together, but i remember that slug of a bull. it weighed over 560lbs gutted and skinned with the head and forlegs cut off, at the locker plant. that thing was so tough you couldn't drive a nail in it with a hilti gun. what a bull. thanks for remindin' me. Lark.
-
i gotta say it. casey you don't need camo for peckery season. you could rent yourself out as a decoy. that have a leena thought you was cuzzin' charley. Lark
-
actually most prewar model 70's weren't drilled and tapped. the first ones have what is called a spatula safety that rotated counter to what the clamshell and wing safeties do and was across the line of site when it was on safety and you couldn't see the sights. couldn't hardly even use that type of safety with scopes because it was under the scope and hard to use. every prewar 70 i've ever seen wasn't drilled and tapped from the factory. during what they called the transition period, when they changed to the clamshell safety, is when they started drilling for scope bases at the factory. Lark.

if you don't follow up, you might hafta follow down. down into a deep, dark, stinkin' canyon a mile or so. Lark.
-
if you're barrel isn't twisted really fast it won't shoot a big bullet well. need to find out what the twist is. .308 diameter bullets are some of the most twist sensitive there are. big long bullets might require as much as 1 in 8". most rifles aren't twisted that fast. Lark.

New Custom Build 45acp Enfield Bolt Gun
.270 replied to cactusjack's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
that's pretty cool. did you have to do any work on the bolt face? i know the .45 acp has the same head as an '06. does the .303 have the same head also? never thought of a rig like that. probably never have one, but that is a neat rig. Lark. -
i've been shot, stabbed, snake bit and lightnin' struck. been bit, kicked, stomped and drug and bucked any direction you can think of. broke my back, cracked my skull, had a knee and a shoulder replaced, in the hospital for 2 weeks with pneumonia and had explosive diarreha. but there ain't never been a day in my life i wernt ready to go elk huntin'. Lark.
