if you think the azgfd didn't have any input in the fines and penaltys, you oughta think again. they are part of the court system and they have a lot of say in the outcome. i've also seen some guys get off with the right judge, when they shouldn't have, but the wardens had a lot to do with how this all went down. one of em got a $25 fine. now there's a waste o' time if i ever saw one. i don't know who to be more dissapointed in, the poachers or the azgfd. is that all they get? Lark.

start with sandpaper, in increasingly fine grades. finish with steel wool, also getting finer as you go. i like to put a little boiled linseed oil on em and then wax em with stock wax. get it good and warm and warm the stock too, for oiling and waxing. lay the stock on the dash o' your 4x4 in the sun awhile and it'll do the job. it'll really suck in the finish then. and if i want it really nice, use birchwood-casey tru-oil. apply a thin coat with your fingers and buff it with xxx steel wool, and do it again and again until you get the result you want. be carefull around the checkering, if it has any. you might even wanna get a checkering tool and re-do it, too. it ain't too hard to do, as long as you have the right cutter for your checkering dimension. i'm gonna retire in a year and a half. if it passes, guess maybe i'll move to new mex. what next? tag prices will coincide with your income? or maybe a guy with a job will hafta pay more than somebody on the dole, so the non-worker gets a free tag? heck, more i look at it, better it sounds. Lark.

oh well. that's the way it is. about 20 years ago i got drawn several times for elk in just a few years. but it has been slow for my whole bunch for awhile. one son got a late bull tag this year. first one since 2000 or any of us. i've had one Az. pronghorn tag in my life and a friend of my kid has had 3 and he's only 21. Lark.

boneus points don't matter any. it's still the luck o' the draw. a guy i know had max points for elk a few years ago when they set aside 20% of the tags for max point guys. the azgfd guaranteed all of em either first or 2nd choice. there were 70 somethin' folks. well, him and 5 or 6 other guys didn't get drawn. next year they guaranteed em their first choice. mathematically impossible for em to not get their first choice. he got the last tag for his 2nd choice. one guy didn't get drawn. even tho it was absolutley impossible for that to happen. azgfd was plum perplexed as to why that happened. especially when there were nonresidents with no points that got drawn. if your number doesn't come up in the computer, you don't get drawn. i'll have 10 points for elk this year and 15 for pronghorn. i'll hafta take my shoes off to count up how many i have for bighorn. i'll be happy with even one of the 3, but i doubt i get it. when it comes to the luck o' the draw, i don't have much. i've seen guys draw an elk tag 7 out of 10 years. bull tags too. seen guys get 3 or 4 tags in a row. my dad went 16 or 17 years between elk tags. he's never had a pronghorn permit. i don't know what to do about the deal, but the boneus points don't seem to give very many folks any kind of edge and a total lack of points seems to work real well for some folks. maybe it's a conspiracy. just cuz i like .270's don't mean i dislike other stuff, except for that pud 7mm/08. the 300 wsm is a little faster than an '06, a little slower than a .300 win mag. a lot slower than a lazeroni, .30'.378 or ultra mag. remember, magnum is a size o' wine bottle and just because somebody slaps that name on a cartridge don't mean anything. only thing that matters is what it will do. some of the biggest pud cartridges ever built are "magnums". 6.5 rem mag, .350 rem mag, are a couple that come to mind. or how about the .17 mag. how can a skeeter sized cartridge be a magnum? Lark.

i ain't seen or even heard of a really big buck from san carlos in awhile. some nice ones. some really good ones. but nothin' that shakes things up, for quite awhile. there has been a buncha monsters from mexico this year. also, san carlos rez ain't near as big as mexico and it is like most of Az. with the sky island deal, where mexico has vast areas of continious coues country. but the hassle with mexican politics, cops, etc. goes a long ways too. my kid and his friends got held up at machine gun point by the cops down there last year. i don't think they'll go back.
