What Caliber is most commonly used
.270 replied to blaserman's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
most commonly used by intelligent folks: .270. all others, except the 7mm/08 are ok, if you don't have a .270. .243 must be ok, if it's working for ya. i like mine. and it must be ok, or i wouldn't like it. it is the only necked down .308 that is any good. Teddy Roosevelt once said, "It should be the goal of every young man to learn to ride hard, shoot straight, tell the truth and own a .270." you gonna go against T.R.? i have accomplished 3 o' them things, but dang, i like to fish. Lark. -
you guys are makin' us all look igernut........Lark.

ok, repeat after me, .270's are the best, .30/30's are cool, and 7mm/08's suck. Lark.

i know this much. the azgfd actively campaigned to outlaw trapping. they had their little special session deal to outlaw predator contests because of one big contest some guys were trying to have that got bad press from antis. they ended up with a watered down version after the state supreme court shot what they did down, but they tried real hard to stop it. they rolled over like a dead carp on the mt lion problem in the sabino canyon area. they stood by and watched the lion population on the strip boom and nearly destroy the mule deer herd, and then watched the lion population starve because they ate all the deer. there was no deer hunting on the strip for a long time because of this and it hasn't even begun to get back where it was. they've allowed the elk population to get so high in some areas as to destroy some real premium deer country. there are a lotta elk in those areas, but not many deer. but elk tags cost a lot more than deer. they were and are very active in this joke we call wolf reintroduction. this has such far reaching tenticles that it will haunt generations. they have been, and will continue to be, on the side of the "california" condors and against sportsmen and the proposed lead ban is just the beginning of what will happen. they allowed the uso fiasco to get to where it was. it ended up as actually a little better deal for Az. sportsmen but kinda think the wished for a different outcome. they've continually ignored the data and recomendations that they funded their own biologists to collect and develop. oh yeah, and they advertize that they want folks to catch crawdad's and eat em because of all the damage this non-native species does to our riparian areas, but if you don't have a fishing license or take em in specific ways, you get a ticket. makes sense to me. (just threw that in to portray what i feel is really stupid legislation) this is just some of the highlights of the azgfd's legacy in the last 20+ years. it'll be interesting to see how changing one guy in the process is gonna help any. but i'm gonna be realistically optimistic. hopefully they will get back to good groundwork by qualified folks and try to develop ways to really improve true wildlife management. soembody needs to pay partik'lar attention to bullwidgeon saturday mornin' to see if he sees his shadow or not. i need to know so's i can know when to plant my garden. Lark.

i've seen them 7mm/08's bounce offa deer and hit the guy that shot it. another guy i now shot at a deer with one and when he went to see if he hit, the bullet hit because it is so slow. i saw another guy shoot at one and the deer died o' old age before the bullet got there. i guess a 25/06 is a little better.............than a 22 mag. actually, they're ok. they just ain't a .270. Lark.

one more thing, you guys best get ready for it, fixin' this wreck is gonna take a lotta stuff that is gonna make a buncha folks mad. i'd hate to inherit a mess like this. the past 20 or so years the azgfd has managed the bottom line, not game. they've let game suffer in order to "provide more opportunity". if they get back to real live game management by using good data and info and by listening too good biologists and then implementing their recomendations, something that hasn't been done for a long time, everyone is gonna hafta get used to things being a lot different for awhile. like i say, if this guy does something that makes me happy, then i might, just maybe, get back into helpin' things out. but it it just status quo, well things ain't gonna get better that's for sure. Lark. p.s. a sheep tag would go a long ways to makin' me happy too. -
no, that was a different guy. them 7mm/08's are dangerous. Lark.

dangit, just when i was gettin' so good at bein' negative..........Lark. -
yep, been around since the 20's and in a couple more "20's" it'll still be here. see, the 25/06 is just like the .270, only less. i seen a guy get hurt when he shot a deer with a 25/06 and it bounced off and hit him in the forehead. the .270 in the only way to improve the /'06. i mean a 25/06 is ok, if ya ain't got a .270. Lark.

doesn't sci recognize high fence stuff? on another note, did anyone see the elk auction on the RFD channel this weekend. that was fun to watch. a lot of 400+ bulls went for 5-7k. one 470+ typical 8x10 went for 22k. some nice roosevelts went for $600. it was funny to hear the auctioneers talk about how you could wait till next year to shoot one and they'd really be big. cmc, when i lived in the hills and was a lot closer to what was going on, there were several, in fact a bunch, of real high profile thrill kill poaching cases. i mean drive down the road and shoot anything that moved and leave it lay, crap. horrible stuff. mostly high school kids, and they were handled so soflty that they turned into coffe shop jokes. it was real disheartening to see what happened. i ain't gonna write down any names, but anyone from the RV area knows zakly what i'm talking about. there were at least 2 other big time cases involving adults and some real serious stuff that were lost because of some seriously poor investigation. then were a couple other minor offenses that were prosecuted to the hilt. i guess i just have a bad additude about it, but this case really reminds me of old times. hopefully they'll their hides tanned in the civil assessment. i still don't see what the use of a $25 fine is. they spent more in gas giving that ticket. unless they can turn it into a big time civil assessment. like monte walsh said to chet, "needlin' folks is what i do". until he does something i like, i'm gonna run him down. just because if for nothin' else. looks like he was born and raised with the azgfd. don't know if that's good or not. we'll see. but for now, until he fixes something and shows us he can really lead and put this train wreck back on the track, it's needle time. wasn't shrouffe from maine or some other foreign place? what if they're just borrowin' it for a really long time? a friend of mine borrowed a shotgun from me and then moved to vermont. did he steal it? i told him he did but after he got me in a headlock and give me a dutchrub for awhile i agreed he was just borrowin' it. Lark. -
here lately i started collecterizin' the old brand name guns. jc higgins was sears' old line. monkey wards has western field. jc penneys had a line, revelation was the western auto line. got me a monkey wards .22 pump. it was made by savage with with the western field logo. got me a jc higgins .22 auto that looks to be made by hi standard. i think the revelations were mostly savage, stevens and mossbergs. nothing wrong with them at all. andya never want to get rid of a gun that was handed down. they are an heirloom, no matter the book value. i want to get at least one gun from the different lines. seems like sears made ted williams guns too. i know they made ted williams fishing gear. i heard walmart was gonna come out with their own line. dick cheney shotguns. heck, you ain't seen how wrong i can get. i can always get wronger. there ain't no limit to my wrongness. but i've seen the azgfd spend all kindsa time on cases only to roll and let em off easy. or do a horrible job in their investigation and give the offender a loophole to squirm through. anytime somebody gets off with a $25 fine, the time they spent on that guy was a waste of time. the shootin' horses deal is bothersome too. it says they were strays. how often you see a stray horse in that area? i lived there a long time and don't recall seeing 6 stray horses total. i couldn't be more wrong........now that's funny right there, i don't care who ya are. opinions are like buttholes. everbody has one and all of em but mine stink. that's my opinion anyway. it was succesfull. per the usfws opinions anyway. goes to show you what real live "wild" animals can do. i don't think most sportsmen, cowboys, sheepherders, etc. would completely agree. what'd i read the other day, 80% of the moose in yellowstone have fallen to the wolves. something like that. deer, elk and bison have dropped way off too. not for sure what kind of effect they have had outside the park. it's sorta funny to me how the usfws and the huggers don't want em to be de-listed. wasn't the goal to get a stable bunch of self sufficient wolves? looks like it worked, and well. but now they still want to protect instead of manage. wonder what kinda line there will be for wolf tags? i'd like to shoot one. i have to agree, it has been a successfull reintroduction. take real live wild animals from one place and put em in another. not pen raised, part dog, mutts like these things we have here. but i still wonder about the effects. the area had gotten along quite well without em. sad to see anything wiped out. but i still don't know how i feel about it for sure. i know how i feel about these currs we have tho.
