so whatta all you bone'narrow freaks think of limiting the number of hunters with the new drawing only archery hunts in 1,7, kaibab and the the strip? just wondering. it's something i've felt for a long time would be a good idea. at least it will seperate serious archers from kids. anyway, any opinions? just don't use the word stock when you mean stalk and wench when you mean winch, like those retarded kings did. there are so many mispilled and rongly used words in that stinkin' rag even i can't even stand to read it. and don't show me a 300 bull and try to tell me it "green scored" 350, or a 98 lb lion and say it weighs 160, like that stupid trophy hunter magazine. or have 50 photos of that smilin' dork that is always in the eastman comic book. be real and be realistic. huntin' ain't hollywood. i think the elk explosion had more to do with it than anything, but i also think that unchecked bowhunting was a more than a small factor. between the two, it devastated the herd. Lark.

many years ago i hunted with a bow a lot. i've taken most of the Az. big game with arrows. pigs, deer, elk, bear, turkey, lion. multiples on most of em. i loved the fall bow season. heck, i love any season. but around the time that compound bows started getting real popular, mid to late 80's or so, the guys in the back of trucks riding around shooting spikes got out of control. i remember a big camp o' guys that had some guys i knew in it. there were 12 guys in the camp. they wounded 15 bucks, and tagged one. and several of them were law enforcement folks. seemed like everyone i knew would wound at least one buck every year. a lot of guys would wound multiple deer every year. i always blamed it on guys shooting too far and hitting them in the leg or guts. but they all had 80 and 90 yard pins and could hit a target most of the time and it is hard to not shoot when you're hunting. that time of year, about any wound is fatal. flies get to em and they die. i really got sick of camo'd up jackasses in the back of of a truck tryin' to act like a hunter. about this time i really saw the deer population drop off. i went 6 years in a row, and shot a buck, with a rifle, that weighed over 200 lbs field dressed. a couple were way over. big bucks. big racks. all in unit 1. then it went to heck. last time i hunted unit 1 i shot a 2x3 near the end of the season. only thing bigger than a spike i saw. i quit even applying for that unit after that. this was about the time the elk population exploded and i'm sure that had a lot to do with a deer decline. but i also think that all of the little bucks getting gutshot by roadkillers had a drastic affect of the population. calculate in a concerted effort by the azgfd to outlaw trapping, trying to put a big damper on predator hunting in general, a concerted effort to really increase the elk herd, and a few other factors like dry years, etc, and the deer about disappeared in u1. and 27 really took a dive also. i have not seen one deer, not even a doe, in the last 2 u1 late bull hunts. my kids saw a couple bucks one night in the headlights, 2 years ago. the permits have gone from 1500 to i think 100. something like that. from a unit that i have seen over 40 bucks in one day before. don't know how much of en affect bow hunting had on the decline, but it nosedived like nothing i've ever seen. talk to a game ranger, and all they say is that the buck/doe ratio is ok. doesn't matter what the total number of animals is, i guess. i think something should have been done years ago. it's too bad too. because it was a lot of fun. it's also too bad that a buncha roadkill specialists did what they were doing and were allowed to do it. me and my youngest son went turkey hunting and fishing in u1 last weekend. we saw well over 500 elk. saw 2 little bunches of deer. about a dozen all together. and u1 is good deer country. i agree with going to a draw, but i think they were way late in doing it. i imagine that the loss in funds was the major reason they ignored things so long. dollar signs seem to matter a lof more than wildlife anymore. anyway, hunt hard guys. it's gettin' harder all the time. Lark.

is it a featherweight? i don't see a hole in the bolt, but some featherweights didn't have it. it doesn't have the knot in the barrel where the back sight goes either. it doesn't look like a pencil barrel like the featherweights had, so it may be a standard with a different barrel. the featherweights have alluminum trigger guard and magazine drop plate too. they only made 2 barrel styles on the sporters. 22" pencils on the featherweights and either 24, 25 or 26" on the standards, africans, westerners, alaskans and super grades, all with the same taper and sights. they made a super grade featherweight too, with the skinny barrel. with an aftermarket barrel and stock and jewelled bolt, you're probably pretty close to right on the price. if anything, maybe a little high. depends on how bad somebody wants it. when you go to a gunshow, they seem to want a lof for em, but nobody will ever pay you for yours what they want for theirs. it's a finicky market. 70's with uncut stocks, untouched finish, that don't have the monte carlo shaved off (most of em do) and in really good shape are worth more. but you seldom see one for even a grand. a guy had a .375 h&h african at the last gunshow i went to and he wanted $3850.00 for it. doubt he'll get that, but he'll get 3. if i'da had 3 in my pocket i'da bought it. most of the '06's and .270's, in standard grade that i saw were in the $700-$900 range. but they were pretty much original. if you have a photo of the entire gun, all the way to the end of the barrel, send it to me. i'm always interested in 70's that ain't wore out. Lark.

that and the oil companies will just raise the price to cover the tax, increasing what we pay for it. remember this, when someone says "tax", it's just a quick way of saying they are gonna take more of "YOUR" money. big corporations couldn't care less about taxes on their product. they just raise the price of the product to cover it. and who pays the difference? c'mon, you know the answer. you do. and if you look at it like an accountant, increasing the taxes on a product actually puts more profit on the black line. if you charge a dollar for something and the taxes are raised, you have to increase the price you get for it to cover the tax increase, or you will miss your profit margin. so while the percentage of profit doesn't change, the actual profit, the bottom line does. because the cost of the product has rissen. that's why car manufacturers don't mind all the emission and safety rules they have to abide by. they get more for the car, that improves the bottom line. remember, when the day is done, taxes come out of our pockets. dosn't matter what the tax is on. in the end, we pay it. Lark.
