    Aimal attack

in africa there is some kinda fruit that ferments on the tree and when the animals eat it they get drunk. there is an old movie that shows drunk monkeys, elephants, rhinos, giraffes, anything you can think of. they all really congregate to wherever the fruit is and stay drunk as heck for days. it also shows em with hangovers after they sober up. it's pretty funny. a hungover monkey holdin' their head in their hand is some funny stuff. Lark.
  2. now that's funny right there, i don't care who ya are. Lark.

    30-06 Coues Load?

you need to know the twist rate of your barrel. .30 cal is real picky when it comes to bullet weights. most of the time it's real hard to shoot light or heavy bullets from an '06. they usually have rilfes cut for meduim weight bullets. 150's and 165's. Lark.

    New Elk Rifle

ok, listen up ya buncha amateurs. i'm gonna expound real wisdom and 'sperience on ya. if you're only 2 choices are the 7mm and .300 short mag, then go with the .300. it will shoot a bigger bullet faster. anytime you have the same case with different diameter bullets, the bigger bore will outshoot the smaller bore. simple physics. you have a .284 diameter bullet with say a 154 gr bullet and .308 diameter with a 150. the .308 cal bullet is shorter and fatter, has less bullet length in the lands, has a bigger bore for gas expansion, builds up less pressure and you can put more powder in it before you reach unsafe pressure and it will shoot faster. same reason a '06 with 150's will shoot faster than a .270 with 150's. same case, the fatter bullet shoots faster. now that we got that settled, why do you want to limit yourself to a short mag? these little fat cases sorta took over a couple years ago and i 'spearminted with em a little. never bought one, but did some reloading and shooting with em. the .270 short is real interesting because it is a lot hotter than the .270 win, that i love so much. not quite as hot as a weatherby, but weatherbys are for wierdos (see: bullwidgeon) and i refuse to be in that catagory. but the 7mm and the .300 short mags ain't as hot as either a 7mm rem mag or the .300 winchester. they shoot a little less powder and are maybe a little more efficient if you figure grains of powder to fps, and the non belted case has a little more theoritical inherent accuracy because it headspaces on the shoulder instead of the belt. but you can get a couple hundred more fps outta the regular old boys than you can out of the napoleon complex ammo. then they took the same little fat case and stuffed .32 cal, .257 cal, etc. in em and had a whole buncha stuff going on and folks went nuts for it, for awhile. looks like the .300 and the .270 have a chance to make it. i don't see any of the rest of em hangin' on for a real long time, because they just don't quite do what others will. if i was gonna get me a new elk gun, (remember i'm smarter than any o' you jokers) and didn't already have one, i'd get a .300 winchester in a real good gun. if i already had one, i'd get a .300 ultra mag. real impressive performer. 'spensive, but impressive. my oldest son bought a christensen carbon barrel and put a swarovski with all the crosshairs in it on top. we tinkered with bullets and decided to sit on the 180 gr nosler accubond. it's a pretty amazing combination. o' course i did the loadin', so whattaya 'spect? he killed a nice 6 by bull with it last year at 804 yards. real impressive. but again, i taught him how to shoot. so i guess it ain't that amazin'. the short mags are interesting and really were when they first came out. the .300 is a little hotter than an '06, but several hundred fps less than a win mag. the 7mm is a little hotter than a .280, but not as swift as the 7mm rem mag. they boast about less recoil. well duh, they shoot less powder. e=mc2 dudes. if you want to make a big bullet go fast, you hafta put a lotta powder behind it. the short mags are ok. but so is just about any centerfire, but don't get caught up in all the short mag rhetoric. and remember about how sensitive some calibers are to barrel twist. from what i've seen most of the .300 short mags have a fairly slow twist that might not stabilize a 180 very well. back around the turn of the last century a guy named newton realized that short fat cases were a good thing. he developed some really amazing cartridges, but they never took off for whatever reasons. folks have known for at least 100 years that short and fat can have some real good attributes. but when it all comes down to it, more powder=more speed. Lark.

i heard there was an elk farm in the near vicinity of this bull. and that bull looks suspiciously like a farmer to me. wonder if he was released in order for someone to get a new record? it's an incredible rack, but it just doesn't look natural. Lark.
  16. well, i've gutted twice as many animals as the whoever is in 2nd place on the whole planet. there ain't an easy way to field dress any big game. i always gut em out, roll the guts away, and then take care of the rest. either punk it out whole, minus the guts, or skin and quarter it on the spot. only thing i leave is the spine and the skull, on an elk. don't see how this method is gonna help much. do you leave the ribs? looks like they'll be pretty much ruined from rolllin' em around in the dirt. how you gonna get the filets out, without openin' up the guts? that's the best part of any animal. if i'm not gonna cape an elk for mounting, i like to get em on their back and skin em out and use the hide to keep the meat clean. there is too much meat on the ribs to just leave it, so take my wyoming saw and cut the ribs next to the spine. each to his own, but the best way i've found is the old traditional way. hard work. Lark. p.s. i saw some guys do the baseball method once. about destroyed the deer and pulled the carport over they had it tied to.
  17. looks like a carp to me. Lark.
  18. i've had at least 10 people tell me they "Know" somebody thei the azgfd and then tell me a date. about half of em ain't been right, the other half ain't had that date come up yet. what i wanna know is who in the heck would admit they "know" somebody with the azgfd? Lark.

i imagine one o' moss' millionaire clients will get to shoot it. seems sorta like the rule that all big bulls in utard land get shot by nonresidents with fat wallets and private jets and they get guided by moss. but all BS aside, that is the dangdest non-farm bull i've even heard of. Lark.
  21. casey, how old are ya in human years? Lark.
  22. a prison sentence has an end to it. "NEVER" hunting or fishing or shooting again, don't. he's gotta spend the rest o' his life trying to live down whatever the heck it is he did. that's a lotta guilt, even for a guy that doesn't seem to have a conscience, to live with. 4 years in prison ain't nothin' compared to forever. every day when he wakes up, as soon as the reality of the day hits him, he's gonna have all that crap smack him in the face. i still wonder why it was livestock violations? it's says they were wild elk. so why wasn't it game violations? sounds to me like it was pretty much what we used to call "rustlin'". and the bighorn theft was only theft. shouldn't that be a game violation? i guess if they crossed the state line with em, then the lacy act might come in to play later. but then you might be getting into the double jeopardy deal. i'm guessing that they didn't have any kind of a wildlife case against him or they would have prosecuted it as such. part of the deal he offered them must have been the no hunting and fishing deal, because i don't think they could take your hunting license for rustling livestock. could they? heck, i ain't no lawyer. i know he had cancer awhile back but he told me he was well and felt fine. knowing him, i can't help but feel a little bit sorry for him. but you can only fool folks for so long. too bad. because all BS aside, he was a helluva hunter. too bad he let the fame get ahead of the desire. well, there's a buncha other guys out there just as bad. be nice to see em all go down in flames. Lark.
  23. i've known kirt for quite awhile. never hunted with him, but we've kept in touch for quite a few years. this is really a shocker to me. i've always been "on his side" through all the other things he's been through. after reading all the indictment stuff, i really figured he'd walk. sounded to me like the elk tranquilizer deal was pretty weak and it was also a livestock case, not a wildlife case, from what the indictment said. the stolen bighorn deal was a real problem to me. after all the other allegations he'd weathered, why would he do anything that might re-enforce what folks had been saying. glad those guys got their heads back. i'd kill somebody that stoled a bighorn head form me, and i don't have one. looks to me like they must have really had some $h!t on him this time. he agreed to never hunt, fish or own a gun again?!?! whoa, that's some pretty tough stuff to agree to when you were once considered to be the most elite hunter there was. can he get a visa with these convictions? if he can, i imagine he'll spend a lot of time in mexico, where the u.s. laws don't apply. too bad kirt. guess i was wrong about ya. i still have my doubts about how guilty he was in the nailor buck deal. i still don't think they are the same deer. i know the guy that is listed as the owner of the nailor buck and he said it had the skull plate repaired with fiberglass. kirt's doesn't. that and the c-14 dating sorta makes me think they are 2 different deer. but this pleading guilty deal, you only do that to keep from getting hammered in court. i can't imaging what it would be like to never be able to hunt, fish or shoot, again. ain't no way i'd be able to live up to those terms. he must have been looking at some real hard time, not just theoretical sentencing, for him to plea. at 69, he's in for a miserable old age. getting old really stinks. getting old and not being able to do anything but sit on the porch and know the whole world knows you're a liar and thief, well that don't sound like much fun to me. gotta be worse than even prison. Lark.
