ain't the sst made to explode on contact? i've been with some guys that used em and it looked like they hit em with a grenade. i've always had real good results from the interlocks. and they are cheap. i tried the barnes some when they first got popular. lost several hundred fps and said heck with it. have had some real bad experiences with animals running off after direct hits with barnes since then. in fact, every time i've been with someone who used them, every time, after hits right in the lungs, they ran off. every time. in fact, i won't hunt with anyone who uses them after the last fiasco. guess some folks don't mind trackin' stuff, but i do. they are probably a decent bullet to used on really big animals and maybe on kodiaks. but they are about as useless as anything i've ever seen for elk. just punch a hole and don't do much inside em. seems like the eddystone was a rifle built for America in England. it's an enfield chambered in '06 so the yanks could use their ammo in it. eddystone is the town in England where the plant was. real well made rifle, but they weigh a bunch. has that big pile o' steel on the back of the action where the vernier sight flips up. used to be a lot of them around in gun shops. seems like it has a one piece stock, where the enfield has a buttstock and a front stock, not just a forepiece. they have a huge ring of iron about where the grip started that divided the stock. been a long time since i saw either one. be ashamed to buy a book for $50 to find out your gun is only worth $40. all a .280 is is a 7mm/08 magnum. and it's in a 740, the first ever semi auto single shot ever built. 'sposta be a semi auto, but they always jam, thus they are a single shot most o' the time. i'd say tie a rope to it and use it as a boat anchor. but then you'd be polutin' water. you'd be better off lookin' up the price o' scrap iron and weighin' it. that'd get ya pretty close to the value. Lark.

that's zakly why i hate to go to the public range. always a buncha guys whinin' about my .300 ultra with a muzzlebrake. now them guys with the .50 bmg's, i hate them guys. and the wannabe swat guys and guys who want ya to think they're "special forces". more like special ed. and i hate that sawed off drill sargent actin' guy at usury who always yells at me for usin' my spottin' scope on a rifle stock. he can't get it through his head that it ain't a gun. So what happens if......

i can't disagree with anything you've said. i'm holding onto hope that Mcain can pull it off. it looks a little better everyday and it can happen. but no matter what, this is still America. we'll just hafta vote the joker out in 4 years if he gets elected. clinton had a dumbocrat house and senate for several years and was never able to do much. i still maintain he didn't want to. he was in it for himself and the office and country meant nothing to him. osama might be different. he might actually believe the crap he spews. gonna be interesting to say the least. go Mcain, go Palin! Lark. -
if he'da had a lion tag he coulda just shot it. how come i never have them things follow me? i've had to work my butt off for everyone i've ever killed. Lark. http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/200...mtnlion-ON.html

lions are fare grub. make excellent green chili. funny tho, after eatin' it awhile i find myself always coverin' stuff up. i lion rug will run ya probably $500+. but it is a heck of a trophy and not many can say they have one. shoulder mounts are comparable to deer in price. or you can just have the hide tanned and throw it over the back o' couch or something. if you kill one, i'd highly recomend saving the hide in one way or another. i don't like obama. i pray every day that he won't get elected. but if he does, he will still be our president. all this talk about assasination and stuff doesn't do any of us any good. whoever gets elected will do their full term. American military intellingence, at least since Bush has allowed all the different groups to exchange notes, is incredible. if something does happen it will be because whoever the president is puts the walls back up that prohibit different intelliegence agencies from talking to each other. like clinton did that led to 9/11. the amount spent on protecting the president is arbitrary. it doesn't matter. what matters is that they protect him. he scares me to death, but there are enough checks and balances in place in our gov't to overcome whatever he might do. again, the president can't make the bills. he can sign them or veto them. he can influence them, but he can't do much more than that. where our real problem is is in the house and senate. and i don't think the bunch idiots the dumbocrats have elected can get anything done. and them doing nothing is a good thing. actually, where our real problem is is in our education system that has quit teaching civics, gov't, geography, etc. the last 20 years has produced nothing but a bunch of kids that do not know anything what so ever about gov't, except what they see in a movie from hollywood. history has been rewritten. the real good guys are now the bad guys, or they don't even exist in the minds of folks because they know nothing about them. this is a sad time in our history, where half of the country have no clue what so ever what is truth and what isn't. but all this talk about obama gettin' killed doesn't do anyone any good. the office should always be bigger than the person holding it. casey got attacked by a lion once. the lion bled to death from lickin' it's butt so much tryin' to get the taste out of it's mouth. Llark.

30-06 long vs short range shooting.
.270 replied to liviustoica's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
clay, i don't really know how to read the chart you posted, but what i see says it drops 295 inches at 1000 yards. 24 1/2 feet. if you had an '06 sighted in at 900 yards, i'd bet it would drop 30 inches from there to 1000 yards. i ain't tryin' to start a fight, which is unusual for me, but your info ain't right. no rifle sighted in at 250 will only drop 30 inches at 1000 yards. well, maybe a .270. but no other rifle. not sure what you're reading, but i still hafta disagree. who cares? obama won't be the president and right now that is all that matters. i really think that when it comes time to go in the booth, Americans are gonna do the right thing and vote Mccain/Palin. i really do. i think the media and pollsters have been hedging trying to sway things for osama, i mean obama's way and that when it comes down to it, the good guys are gonna win. if they don't, well, i don't even wanna think about that. Lark. -
congratulions. good news to hear. hard headed kids are good for a lotta things. landin' on their head and survivin' is one of em. good luck to you and yours. Lark.

they cost $14.50 and every good hunter should buy one when he gets his license. and you guys need to get houndchasers number and call him up if you find a kill. it's a great time and a chance at a great trophy and they really do need thinned out some. i don't know about all the body language stuff, but if a lion is close enough that i can shoot it, i'm gonna. i know they do a lotta hissin' and pissin' when you put em up a tree. i've had several try to put this child under and i was too busy shootin' at em to look for body language signals and stuff. i ain't too afraid of one myself. them or bears. they usually just want to get away. 30-06 long vs short range shooting.

they shoot the '06 at camp perry at 1000 yards all the time. even 1500. but i hafta disagree with 30" drop at 1000 yards. or a 6 or 7 inch drop at 500 with a 250 zero. i would think that would be more than 30 inches, right there. i would think an '06 at 1000 yards would maybe drop closer to 30 feet at 1000 yards. an '06 with a 165 gr bullet shooting 2800-2900 fps, which is about all you can realistically get from it, and sighted in at 100 yards, will drop from 50 to 70 inches at 500 yards, depending on the BC and some other factors. sighting one in a few inches high at 100 will put it on at 200 or 250, but the same gravity pull arc takes over and it drops like crazy. just from 400 to 500, you're gonna drop over well 2 feet. from 500 to 600, most rifles drop several feet, just in that span. from 600 to 700, it's even more exagerated, etc. at 1000 yards the bullet is about going straight down. an '06 will hit at 1000 yards if you can make it. buti it has to be sighted in at that range. our worst enemy, gravity, really takes hold and sucks them bullets into the dirt. no rifle shoots very flat after a few hundred yards. even these new arm cannons and .50 bmg sniper rifles, etc, they all drop fast. it depends on how it is sighted in and how close you can guess the range. Deer Hides for Veterans?
.270 replied to Sundevils79's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
that is a dang good question. rusty's butcher shop in springerville does. he's involved with the DAV's pretty heavy. don't know about anyone in tucson. might try the web for info. deer and elk make some fine gloves and giving the DAV's a job is a good think. Lark. -
that ain't fair. if the lions can hunt folks there, then folks oughat be able to shoot back. who passed that dumb law? Lark.

i prefer muleys. they are the thinkin' man's deer. it's a proven fact that muley hunters are intalek, wait inellackshull, anyway, a lot smarter than dwarf deer hunters. the midget deer are for those with small minds and #%$&$. and carneys. lotsa carneys hunt coues deer. they require little to hunt except a buncha high $ foreign made glass and a rifle that will shoot 1000 yards. the only muleys that lay in the open and will let a small minded midget deer hunter shoot em need eliminated anyway. if they don't get shot, they will turn into a coues deer after a couple years anyway. i prefer to track muleys down in the brush and jump shoot em runnin' at 20 or 30 feet. not many of us can do it tho. everytime i go coues deer huntin' i'm alway wonderin' what to do with the rest o' the season. i mean after i put one in my fanny pack and go back to camp, rip the hide off with my fingernails and then have it for breakfast as the sun comes up on opening day, anyways. Lark.

the ribs and neck are parts that a lot of folks overlook. thanks for posting this. that's a real clean job. appears you have some butcher experience. when i was in high school i worked in a butcher shop for a couple years. it has been very valuable experience over the years. i always carry a wyoming saw. after you get the neck and front leg off and peel out the backstrap, you can take a saw and go through the ribs near the spine and with a little work you can roll the ribs right up into a fairly tight roll to pack out and you can bone em out when you get to the house. it takes about one stroke per rib on deer and maybe 2 or 3 on elk. ribs saw easy. on a deer anyway. on an elk you might have to do a little saw work between the ribs at the brisket to get it to roll up. this is what i always do this on an elk when i'm using and equine to retrieve it. getting rid of the spine and pelvis saves a lot of weight and leaves no meat to waste. the ribs and neck aregreat. take the neck (or necks) and put em in a crockpot or one o' them throw away alluminum pans and put it in the oven for 6 or 8 hours. shred the meat off and make green chili, bbq, etc. great stuff. same process works well on the ribs too. good post. Lark.

c'mon guys, don't exaggerate. he only thinks there's 53. you guys forget about new mexico and old mexico, baja california and eastern carolina........Lark.

no, i didn't mean to shoot geezers. you gettin' senile on us? i mean they have hunts that only kids can apply for. why not have hunts that only old guys can apply for? have a minimum age, like 70 or so and a minimum length of time you have to be an Az. resident. even if it's just a few tags. maybe let a couple early bull tags, some kaibab deer tags, a few goat tags. not a big bunch, but something to reward folks for gettin' old. my dad has never had a pronghorn or sheep tag. he gave up on sheep awhile back, but still applies for goats. took him 17 or 18 years to get his last elk tag. there is a photo of the 6x6 he shot on this thread. just something to think about. Lark.

i've seen guys bait with corn, but this guy used a whole field! Lark.

The Barack IL Gun Owners Know
.270 replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
from what i recall about the mccain leiberman gun bill, all the anti gun groups were against it because it loosened things up for gun owners and dealers and gave cops more teeth to deal with criminals. anything an anti gun group is againt, i'm probably gonna be for. there is room for better laws to keep guns from criminals. but we need to enforce the ones we have now, before any new stuff gets mandated and then not enforced. if anyone cares anything about hunting, they won't vote for obombus. if you do vote for him, you will put the chain on your own ankles. Lark. -
i flunked the fishin' part too. seems that 'dynamite' is not a good answer on any fishin' question. that and when it axed about limits i used the pat mcmanus rule on the question, "all you can catch, plus one". i can't believe they have rules on fishin'..............Lark.

The Barack IL Gun Owners Know
.270 replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
what i wanna know is why they call it a "CRIME" bill? a gun can't commit a crime. if you have a gun are you automatically a criminal? why don't we have a "CRIMINAL" bill? you know, where they enforce the law and put @$$holes in prison for breakin' it. like they say, when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns. guess what, they're gonna make me and you outlaws with their BS. another thing i wonder, awhile back there a quite a few folks on this site talkin' about how good o' guy obama is and how they were gonna vote for him. where are you lackies now? how come we never see anyone supporting this joker on here anymore? i see you guys on other threads here. if obama gets elected you can plan on walking a lot, because you won't have any gas. not hunting, because it will die a death of a thousand cuts. they'll outlaw bullets, powder, primers, etc and then they'll put such a fine definition on what kinda guns you can own, that you can't own one. the global warming wierdos will be able to run rampant and outlaw everything that makes life better. the only thing the endangered species act won't cover is humans. you'll be in the welfare line, because that's where they want everyone, because the gov't can live your life for you better than you can. you'll have to get a visa to travel state to state (something that janet reno tried to float). you'll be taxed literally to beyond the grave. if you have a decent job and can pay your bills, you will be the rich guys he's talking about that he's gonna take the money from so he can support all the bums in this country. so, where are you obama freaks? i wanna hear someone give me one good reason to vote for this sob. i truly hope the bradley effect works. Lark.
