Sportsmanswarehouse going out of business?
.270 replied to hawkeye's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
after my infamous credit card dealing with sw, i haven't darkened the door. but i don't want them to go out of business either. i reload a lot. thousands of rounds per years. i just chunked 14 empty 1 pound powder cans the other day. and i do that several times per year. shortly after sw opened it was real apparent that they didn't have much of a clue about what they needed to stock as far as components for reloading. they really got on the short mag and super short mag bandwagon and had a lot of brass that nobody wanted. but few bullets or powder that was usefull to me. when a hole in the wall like the pistol parlor or guns etc have literally 10x the inventory of a huge place like sw, it shows some real lack of vision and poor planning. but they have been that way from almost day one. when i had the big go-round, the ceo of sw called me. no bs. he called me. and he said that they had some real problems in keeping reloading supplies in stock and that they were working on correcting them. doesn't sound like they made much headway. but when i was at bass pro the other day, they really stunk too. piles and piles of stuff nobody wants and nothing in popular calibers. stacks of bullets nobody wanted and nothing in weights and styles that shooters and hunters use. and no powder. none. they had about 6 pounds of powder and half that was for shotguns. cabelas is a little better, but for a serious shooter and hunter, like me, they have a lot to be desired too. again, when little places like the well managed ones here in the valley have a decent inventory, it shows some real inexperience and poor vision by the big guys. and they have a lot of guys working there that are career clerks that don't have much experience with shooting. not really their fault either. it's the way of business. the more a guy knows, the more you hafta pay him. keep around some people that are sorta literate and can lift heavy things and you can make more money than if you pay a guy a lot for his knowledge and experience. it's the big box mentality. try to find someone at walmart that has a clue. and it ain't just shooting supply. try to find a decent pair o' boots without insullation or goretex. when was the last time you needed either in this state? again, no clue. Lark. -
this guy's place has been trashed, trespassed, stolen from and his rights have been trampled for decades. now he gets sued by folks who were in the country and on his property illegally, because they say he was rude. they'll probably win. lawyers are gonna have a field day under the new gov't of the obamanation. didn't it say he has helped in the arrest of 12,000 illegals? that's twelve thousand, not hundred. Lark.

that is a law that bush enacted shortly before leaving office and is also the one that obama is going to recind soon. it is a continuation of one that Reagan enacted that allowed unloaded firearms in a national park. i believe they had to be kept in your vehicle also. the original intent was so that someone travelling could stop off and see a national park and not worry about being arrested for having a firearm in their car. Bush took it a step further. the new deal they were talking about was recinding these laws and for some reason making interstates, or parts of interstates, part of the national park system. thus making it a crime to have a firearm in your car, if you are on that interstate, or part of that interstate. if i heard it correctly, and i think i did. for instance, if i-10 were part of the national park system, you wouldn't be able to travel to southern Az. from here, with a firearm. as it is now, there are parts on interstates that cross national parks, and if they enact this, if you had a firearm, you would either have to detour around them, or go home. pretty interesting the lengths, that these guys will go to to keep a guy from shooting a gun. has anyone heard of what i'm gong to write about? and if you have can you expand on the topic? i want to know. a big part of my job is to drive all over this cotton pickin' valley and when i'm driving i listen to the radio a lot. yesterday on one of the conservative talk shows they were talking about one of the things included in the so called stimulus bill (c'mon we all know it has more pork in it than bacon) and they were concerned about one of the paragraphs that was going to include some interstates in the national park system. said the reason for it was because obama was going to strike the law that allowed you to have an unloaded gun in a national park (which bush actually changed to make it legal to have a loaded gun legally and even to carry a concealed gun in national parks that were in states that allowed CCW), therefore making it illegal to carry any firearm on the included highways, because they will be part of the national park system. evenif you're just passing through. i had to get out for awhile before they elaborated on what they were talking about and didn't get to hear the rest of it. but it spooked the heck outta me. i've said from the start that obama is going to let us keep guns, but he's gonna sign any legislation that keeps us from shooting them. this sounds like some sneaky, spooky $h!t to me. but it is exactly what i think we have to expect. i look for them to somehow outlaw ammo components, or ammo in general, but using some hazardous material designation on primers or powder or even lead. i also see some real restrictions on shooting ranges over lead and in plinking in general, over lead. i hate to get apocoliptic about anything. nothing aggravates me more than any kind of radical extremism. and these anti gunners, and liberals in general are extremely radical. the NRA gets a little extreme and radical, but i go along with the NRA in fighting any anti-shooting legislation, because you can't let freedom get eroded. because of the absolute stupidity of anti gun people they have to be in polar oposition. once the erosion starts, you never really stop it. we all need to take a hard look at what this obama guy really has in his heart. it's pretty scary. i mean really scary. not just guns, but everything. he's all for confining everyone he can and limiting freedom as much as he can. the ability to travel will be another thing he tries to limit. nothing makes the American public more free than the internal combustion engine. anyway, if anyone has anymore info on the national park/highway deal, let me know. i've looked, but keep coming to dead ends. and if you know anybody that voted for obama, slug em in the gut and ask em what the heck they were thinkin'. Lark.

Sportsmanswarehouse going out of business?
.270 replied to hawkeye's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
there ain't a place in town that has any powder. i've heard sw is out of everything, but they have never had a good supply of reloading stuff. pretty much useless. i was at bass pro the other day and they had a lot of crap that nobody wanted and next to nothin' of the stuff folks do want. they had at least 50 boxes of .44/40 ammo. how many folks you know have a .44/40? and no .357, 9mm, .44 mag, .45 auto, .45 long, etc. i bought some .224 hpbt match bullets and some 140 gr btsp .270. other than that, they had a buncha junk. they had stuff like 165 gr. .270 bullets and 170 gr .308 in some morphodite type of bullet, but nothing anyone wants to use. it was pathetic. in the case of bass pro it looks like they have a moron doing the orders. some clerk who doesn't have a clue what folks use. but my favorite hole in the wall places are all outta powder and primers. a couple have a few bullets, but they are all outta the popular stuff. we tried to order some stuff on the net from cabelas, midway and at least one other place i can't remember the name of. they were all back ordered on anything that had to do with loading. even presses and powder throws. they had very few popular bullets in stock. kinda spooky. folks are scared of obama and his liein' assed ways and are buying everything they can get their hands on. the mi-wall booth at the last gunshow was so busy it paralized the rest of the show. obama swears he has no problem with owning a gun. but i think he's gonna figure out a way to eliminate ammo. he's gonna make primers, or powder, or lead, something integral, a hazardous material and make it impossible to get. if not the actual product, then one or more of the chemicals used to produce them. hide and watch. i know i've spent a fortune on powder, bullets and primers lately. because something is gonna happen. and if it don't, then i'm well stocked. all the obama voters are gonna get what they axed for, only they don't realize that they didn't know what were axin' for. Lark. -
told ya clancy had to go. whisenhutt knows who to listen to. pendergrast was a sacred cow. the only hold over from dennis green. whisenhutt didn't want him but he had no choice because clancy is real well connected politically. his family actually used to own the land the stadium is built on. only reason he was ever hired in the first place is because of political connections and the only reason he lasted as long as he did was for the same reasons. the last drive in the super bowl was too much and his connections couldn't cover for it. you guys will learn to listen to me. i ain't kiddin' when i tell ya i'm the smartest guy in the wurld, wrold, i mean on earth. Lark.

pendergrast has always been a weak coordinator. they had a chance to win the big one and he went into the armadillo prevent. they even had a holding call on the drive and still won. they shoulda pounded the qb like they've neve done before. just needed one sack or something, but he had em all drop back into prevent. for one drive they needed to play like killers, and they didn't. the interception at halftime was a killer, but they overcame it and should have won. as far as the ref's, the immaculate reception was an incomplete pass. video proves it. they beat the oilers in the playoffs 3 years in a row and bad calls either kept the oilers off the board or kept the steelers in the game. the one where they said billy johnson didn't have control of the ball was the most pathetic call of all time. game wining touchdown. no good. video proves it wasn't even close. they beat dallas once because they called benny barnes for pass interference while he was laying on the ground 30 feet away because swann tripped him. look at the calls in the super bowl with the seahawks. rothlisberger had 9 completions and 2 interceptions and they still won. the very fact that holmgren got away with saying what he said with no fine proves that one. without the bad calls it was a blowout by the seahawks. it was pathetic. heck, some real iffy calls that went their way helped em beat the ravens this year in the regular season and the playoffs. in this game, whisenhutt threw the challenge flag twice and won both times. therefore, bad calls. they missed the grounding call so bad that later, on the same drive, he chunked one outta bounds and they immediately reviewed it to show they got that one right. because they knew they screwed up the first one. the roughing call on dansby will live in infamy, it was so bad. poor calls did have an affect on the outcome of this game. for whatever reason, the steelers always get the benefit. bum phillips and john madden are still pissed about it. i just hope the bidwills don't screw things up, because they have a real chance to repeat. but history ain't on the cards side. Boy's first big game rifle, suggestions?
.270 replied to lfootmatt's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
ok, what are the ballistic advantages of a 7mm bullet? it is .284 diameter, a .270 is .277 (which, by the way, is actually 7mm diameter. europeans like to measure bore diameter inside the lands, not bullet diameter). that is .007" larger in diameter. 7 thousandths of an inch. wrap a piece of tissue around a .270 bullet and it will be over .284 diameter. they make a lotta big bullets for a .284, but big bullets in a small caliber don't do much good. too slow, high pressures, drop like a rock. if you need a big bullet, you need a big gun. nothing wrong with the .284 diameter, but it isn't ballistically superior to a .277. one thing a .270 does have over a .284 is that a 1 in 10 inch twist will stabilize any .270 bullet. you can experience accuracy deficiency with a .284 with various bullet weights, with most barrels, becaue they don't have an ideal twist, like the .270 and .338 cal's do. that's why the name changed from .280 rem to the 7mm express and back again, because they changed the barrel twist, trying to get folks to buy them. the .280 was remington's copycat of the .270 like the .244/6mm rem was a copycat of the .243. there are 2 big reasons they never did well in sales. both cases were made a little longer than the .270 or .243 to keep someone from chambering them in the wrong gun. this intern wouldn't allow an '06 to be easily necked down to the .280 and wouldn't allow the .308 to be easily necked down to a .244/6mm. and they twisted both barrels wrong to stabilize the bullets hunters wanted to use, instead of what they wanted them to use. the .280 would be a great gun, if there wasn't already the .270 and if you could neck down '06 brass without a lotta work. the .244/6mm is the same story. all guns are good, some are better, and the .270 is the best, having been divinely designed and all. i've never been much of a cardinals fan, but not because of the players. the bidwills are poison. but i sure wanted em to win this game tho because my second favorite team has always been whoever is playing the steelers. again, they've never won a big game without zebra intervention. look at the rapin' the seahawks took a couple years ago. only time ever that an nfl coach went on national tv and badmouthed the ref's and wasn't fined. because the league knew holmgren was right. the poor calls did have an influence on the outcome of this game too. per the rule, the last cardinal play was an incomplete pass, not a fumble. might not have changed things, but to me the game was never really finished. the roughing the passer call on dansby was criminal. especially when the squeelers qb blatantly grounded the ball on the same play and it wasn't called. it kept a drive alive that led to a score. the cardinals killed themselves by letting the squeelers return the pick off at the half and by not playing any kind of defense the last 2 minutes. they oughta fire pendergrast over that last drive. but the refs did have a direct impact on the game. one more time, the steelers have never won a big game without ref help. there is no reason to blaspheme and mention the divinely inspired .270 in the same sentence as that other genetically inferior thing based on a .308 case. get him a .270 and your done. Lark. -
everyone needs to read this article and think about what a good thing it is that our last governor left for dc. that guy was killin' us. he left this state in a horrible condition, but imagine what a couple more years have done. Lark. http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/l...budget0204.html

rembrant, you ain't lookin' at it in the right way. the dumbocrats know that everything bad is caused by people. if there are no people, there will be nothing bad. no poverty, no hunger, no disease, no global warming, no violence, no guns, etc. and eventually, no people and no abortions. see, instead of good guys killin' bad guys in wars and stuff, we'll eliminate all the problems by killing the totally innocent. they are too little to fight much anyway and it's been proven to be ethical. and they aren't old enough to vote. if they were, then it would be a different story. it's really brilliant. it's a plan that will take awhile to mature, but when it does, no more problems. i'm pretty sure the plan comes from the song "imagine". so it has to be a good thing. obama is gonna save us all. or at least about 52% of the U.S. population thinks so, and that's all it takes to make it true. Lark.

so trappers are all high school dropouts? where'd that come from? is that a prerequisit? the statement i made was that anything we do, trapping, hunting, fishing, etc. can be construed as unethical by someone. but the same folks will argue that abortion is ok. guess i should have just said gutshot, and left bow out of it. trapping is an outdoor activity that has been eliminated, partly because of apathy by other outdoor enthusiasts. it didn't affect hunters and anglers and the azgfd didn't want to enforce it anymore and it got voted down. shortly after it had been upheld by a decent margain. there were some big differences in the bills, but trapping still got outlawed. the first one, seems like it was 200, could have taken down hunting and fishing too, the way it was written. outdoorsmen have to stick together in everything. even in the areas that we may not completely agree with. even all united in as a strong a bunch as we can be, we're a big minority. divided within our own ranks, we ain't got a chance. scottyboy showed a little of that when he said trapping is more humane that bowhunting. i don't think he is anti bowhunting. but he may have a preference. in either pursuit, one of the objectives is for an animal to die. everything we do can be called inhumane. i don't think it is, but others dang sure do. personally, i'm all for every kind of traditional outdoor experience. i feel there is plenty of room for everyone. but we've all been split up in little groups that instead of having the same objective, using and appreciating the outdoors in whateve way we have chosen, have been divided against themselves. i think birdwatchers, hikers, wilderness survival enthusiasts, hunters, trappers, anglers, loggers, ranchers, farmers, mountian bikers, etc. should all be together in keeping the woods open for us all and i think there is room for it all. and if everyone was all together we'd be a real formicable group. divided we ain't. and i really take exception with the high school dropout deal. did i read it wrong? Lark.

AZGFD Votes to oppose HB 2235
.270 replied to scoutm's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
the azgfd commission has been a payback or reward position for a long time. it doesn't pay anything to speak of, but it's a nice thing to reward folks who have played ball with the right other folks. i had a good friend who was a commissioner once. he was a life long republican but had to change his party affilliation to democrat in order to get the appointment. he told me why and it seemed like they tried to keep a certain amount of elephants and donkeys on the commission. symington, a republican, was who appointed him too. and i also don't think he ever shot an animal in his life. decent enough guy, but he had no real interest in wildlife, especially not at as a sportsman. some guys who've been on the commission have been serious outdoor people who spent a lot of time in the field. but for the most part, they're people who are rewarded with a position of some authority for helping in other political situations. that is my observation anyway. and from what the guy i knew who was on the commission told me, he had the same opinion. this bill looks to me to try and stop some of the real damage that our past governor did with stacking the commission with people who have political desires and not wildlife conservation concerns. look at some of the people who've been appointed over the past 20 years. by both parties. a lot of them had no affiliation with wildlife conservation. or even a passing interest in it. not to bash women, but there have been several gals over the past 20 years who had next to no outdoor desires. their appointments were totally political. a few commissioner had some outdoor experience and a couple were quite involved in hunting and angling. but a bunch had never had a hunting or fishing license and had no desire to be involved in serious outdoor activity. the commission is just protecting themselves and don't want anymore scrutiny than they are already subject to. which is very little. one of the last appointees was voted down by the state legislature because of concerns brought up by sportsmen ogranizations, but the governor went ahead and appointed her for a year anyway and after the year she became permanent, because of weakness in the appointment process.
