if he'da shot it, fried some up along with several other endangered species, i could tell in a blind taste test if it was wolf or not. wolf is good stuff. a lot better than them stinkin' spotted owls or black footed ferrets. Lark.

Rifle Kick....looking for suggestions for next rifle
.270 replied to Redman's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
i was usin' my newly rebuilt and improved .300. my boys won't let me shoot my .270 much anymore. i kill stuff so far away with it that they had to run to beat the coyotes and crows to it and skin it before it spoiled. tried to develop a bullet with salt on it to cure the meat so it wouldn't spoil before we could get to it but never got it right . you're joshin' about killin' somethin' with a 7mm/08 ain't ya? them things are slower than the rotation of the earth. there's been several guys that shot themselves by shootin' it to the east and bullet actually come backwards and hit em because of the earth spin. it just made little knobs on their heads and bounced off tho. did ya know that the 7mm/08 is the only round approved by both peta and sierra club? Lark. -
where you guys get the info that the 7 mag is faster and flatter than a .300 win mag? as far as pure balistics, the .300 is a fair amount superior to the 7 mag. and you can get bullets with incredible BC's. one thing you seldom see in a real live target rifle is a 7mm, in any configuration. these days they're almost all either .308 or .264 diameter, with whatever cartridge is popular behind it. a buncha you guys are gonna freak when i say this, but anytime you have similar sized cartridges with different diameter bullets, the bigger bore is gonna outrun the smaller one. it all comes down to how much bullet is in the lands and the pressure build up associated with the smaller diameter bullets. a .300 win mag holds about 10 more grains of powder and has a significantly larger bore than a 7 mag. the .300 is gonna shoot bigger bullets faster and flatter than the 7 mag. in like sized bullets, it's gonna be a lot faster. BC's won't be the same, but BC don't mean a lot until you get out to about 500 yards anyway. and they make .308's with super BC's. absolutely nothing wrong with a 7mag. it has done incredible things for almost 50 years. extremely popular cartridge and rightly so, but it is a wrung or 2 down the ladder from a .300 winchester or weatherby. Lark.

ya know, i started to do a "i told ya so" deal the other day but decided heck with it. most of the sheep that believed it to start with will still believe it because they are told to and can't form their own opinion anyway. the guys on the fence and guys who were on the same side i was are a little smarter and don't need told so, so why bother? anytiim somebody really starts to sell something, i mean anytime, it is to make money. doesn't matter what it is. look at the crap that went on in y2k. the world was gonna stop turnin' because the date was changin'. better buy a generator and a buncha freeze dried food. not a bad idea to have generators and a food supply, but cuz the date is changin'. like i said before, 10,000 years ago most of north america was covered with 20,000 feet of ice. we're been global warmin' for at least 10,000 years. it's called the weather. it changes. get used to it. and remember, only a politician is stupid and vain enough to think that a law can change the weather. Lark.

thanks for the replys. i used to shoot the first shot to get the range for the second, a lot. with this new rifle and seeing the benefit of this long range stuff, i gotta change a lotta the ways i've always shot. what kinda angle indicaor do you use? i bought a leupold range finder with the angle indicator in it, but the range finder part was junk so i got my money back and bought a leica. range finder is great, but it doesn't have any other function. knowing the angle would have have been handy last sunday. thanks again. Rifle Kick....looking for suggestions for next rifle

energy=numbers on a piece of paper. if you're hunting a charging cape or rhyno or maybe a brown bear, you might wanna pay a little attention to "energy". other than that, forget about it. when you shoot an animal he don't think to hisself "dang, that bullet felt like it had a lotta energy". any decent centerfire will kill anything in north America right nicely. nothing can recover from a lung or heart shot. even from a .22. heck, i've even heard of guys killin' stuff with a 7mm/08, tho i don't believe it. how much evergy does an arrow carry? not very much, that's how much. you need to pay attention to velocity so you can predict bullet drop at a given range, but don't waste your time even thinking about energy. the energy of a bullet is calculated as to what effect it will have on a solid object. animals ain't solid. if energy meant anything then a bullet travelling with sufficent velocity to have say 2000lbs of energy would fling a 100 lb midget deer across a canyon. you wouldn't even be able to find a coyote. knock it into new mexico and you'd get a ticket for not havin' a non res license. pay attention to velocity, trajectory, ballistic coefficient and other pertinent info, but not "energy". if your gun kicks too hard put a sims pad on it. if it still kicks too hard, get a muzzlebrake. still too hard, take up golf or get a 7mm/08. just like the sun comes up ever mornin', rifles kick. just somethin' ya hafta deal with. remember, marksmanship is the key to shooting. if you can't hit, it don't matter how much energy anything has. just ax my boys. they just had to punk a bull out of a canyon that i shot at a shade over 900 yards. by the time the bullet got there it didn't have enough evergy left to open a pop can. but that's a different story. Lark. -
nothin'. already have it all. smarter, better lookin', faster, higher jumpin', stronger, taller, straighter shootin', better lookin' wife, smarter kids, better mule, than anybody else. whut more could i ax for? a new knee maybe, but i'll hafta get that for a groundhog day or maybe a easter present. merry Christmas anyway. Lark.

so, the way i read it, the guy who's sittin' at home waitin' to go elk hunting when his season starts has right of way over guys who are hunting during their season? this a new rule? i imagine they got tired o' the flash goin' off and turned it off. they coulda took a rock to it or, heaven forbid, took it. glad i don't know who these guys are so i won't get threatened on this one, but the one guy i see don't look like a chump and i kinda don't think he won't much care for havin' his photo and character smeared all over the net. ya might not wanna find out who they are and probly really don't wanna meet em. but wait, i forgot about em bein' out there with flashlights in the middle of the night. that might be a felony. or they were trailin' a wounded elk and bein' good sportsmen and not waitin' until daylight. heck, they coulda been snipe huntin'. did they have a sack? this is how it is, the woods are fulla hunters, all the time. only way to not have someone interfere with your hunt is to not hunt. if these guys are around "your" waterhole, there ain't gonna be much come into it anyway. and if they are hunting, during a season they have a permit for, i think they have right of way and turnin' off a camera ain't a big deal. but to me, slimin' someone's character without knowing anything about em or their motives ain't too cool. Lark.

i know the problem. i had to move to keep bullwidgeon away from my place. Lark.

hey gameholler, how you do an expansion test on somethin' that won't make jello jiggle? here's a good load for a 7mm/08, sell lit and buy a .270. or a .22, Lark.

just one more reason we don't need anymore politicians or guys with an agenda on the commission. go shoot the lions and get it over with. i'm pretty sure they could it if they weren't afraid of bad publicity. remember the sabino canyon fiasco? the azgfd is like nfl refs. make the call you know is probably wrong so the booth can review and make sure what it really was. the azgfd tells these dang huggers their intentions and then lets them file an injuction to get the courts to stop them so they appear to be just following the ruling of the court. if they'd just go shoot the lions and don't even tell em about it the problem would be solved. and the whole time they sit around waiting for a their next marching orders, the sheep are disappearing. no matter anyway. the rockies are gonna get bred with the deserts in number significant enough that we soon will have a new breed. Lark.

hey, no excuses. now get back to them banjo lessons. Lark.

if you give one guy a landowner tag, you gotta give em to em all. if you selectivey gave out landowner tags, the guys that were allowing access would shut it down immediatley. i don't see a way that i could support landowner tags in Az. too little private land, too few permits to start with. i know there are access issues in some places. but i don't see landowner tags being any kind of viable answer. hunting on national parks? that's a new one on me. personally, i think there should be places that hunting isn't allowed. national parks are a perfect place for that. sit down and think about it for a minute. can you imagine what kind of nuclear blast it would cause if all the sudden you could shoot bambi in yellowstone or next to el tovar or in yosemite? there could be a fair amount of money made by having a mule deer hunt on the north rim, for a couple years. but you couldn't bring in enough to even make a dent in even our states economy. we're talking billions. billions is a bunch. you couldn't get even a fraction of a billion dollars out of it. you might sell a few pronghorn tags in the petrified forest, yoo. but you're never going to make enough to cover for the damage that would be done to hunting in general. it'd cause an anti hunting backlash like none we've ever seen. we need to put our efforts into not losing anymore than we have now. not into trying to get access to national parks. it ain't gonna happen. as hunters, we are so much in the minority in this country that if you think about it, it's wonder hunting has never been outlawed all together. we don't need to cause ourselves anymore problems. Lark.

you can donate all backstraps and tenderloins to ".270's KITCHEN FOR HOMELESS HUNTERS AND WINOS". i can supply the address and give you what i think should work as a tax deductible deal for your 1040 form. other than that i am absolutely no help at all, just like these other jokers. Lark.

first off, compared to other states especially, Az doesn't have much private land. particularly in areas that have very many animals. in the past, every time landowner tags have been mentioned, they weren't really going to be landowner tags, anyway. folks with leased public land wanted tags for compensation for what the leasee percieved as losses they were incurring on public land. the other tax payers in the state didn't much want to subsidize folks that they already felt were getting a pretty good deal anyway. seems like the state agreed in concept with the cattlemen association at one time to work out some sort of permit deal, for public land lesee's too. as i recall, there was a near riot over the deal, and the state decided to withdraw from the negotiations. in states like colorado and new mex that have vast tracts of private land, the landowner permit programs are supposed to entice the landowners to open up their land to the general public and to make up for whatever losses they may incur because of wildlife being on their private land. there are a lot of cow operations in Az. that are on 100% public land. for a forest service grazing permit you have to own a minimum of 10 acres, in that forest, in a place that is at least in the vicinity of the lease, in order to qualify. most cow operations have very little private land. and most of the few that do have a lot of acres, are in places that don't have a lot of game anyway. as it is now, it's pretty hard to get a premium permit of any kind, in Az. it's getting harder to get any permit, as far as that goes. by giving away even more permits to landowners/leasee's, it would just make it even harder for joe hunter to get drawn. there are a few big clumps of private land in Az. and most of them have made some sort of deal with the azgfd to allow access to at least cross the private land in order to hunt public land, and a lot of the landowners have agreed to allow hunters access to their property. without having to give them landowner permits. there are several programs in place that work with them. i don't know the names of the programs off hand tho. as for as myself, i hate the idea of landowner tags in a state with so little private land. and in a state with so few permits available anyway. i've never had a bighorn permit in Az. and have had only one pronghorn tag, in over 40 years of applying. and that was 15 years ago. if we give away any of the few permits that are available, it isn't going to make anyone happy other than the guy that gets the tag and the rich non resident that buys it from him. i think most folks think that landowner permits would be like opening pandora's box and would lead to even more loss to joe hunter. there have actually been a couple things the azgfd have done over the years that i agree with, not many, but a couple. one of them is resisting "landowner" permits. that vast majority of the dollars that run the azgfd comes from permits and taxes paid by the little guys. (us) i'm against any program that is going to take away anymore opportunity from us little guys. i don't even like the auction tags. they should just raffle off 2 tags, instead of auction one and raffle one. but that's me. i have to look with a real jaundiced eye at anyone that thinks landowner permits are a good thing. they probably have something other than wildlife conservation in mind. you can decide what that might be. Lark.

heck, we give em guns and train em but can't profile? loolooloolooloolooloolooloo. ya'll do know when they do that, that it is mocking form of laughter, don't ya? my coptic buddy from egypt told me that. ever read the koran? some of ya oughta try it. at least once on every page it talks about killing somebody for something. they teach and believe that anybody that isn't a muslim is the devil and has to be killed. i know guys that couldn't serve because of flat feet, but they went on to play pro football. why can't religion be a reason for exclusion? from what i've read this guy was a time bomb with a lit fuse and everbody knew it but nobody wanted to offend him because he was a muslim. patriotism had nothing to do with him being in the army. he wanted the benefits without the sacrifice. now we have over a dozen good people dead and a bunch more wounded because they were afraid he'd get offended. the muslim religion preaches every day that they want and need to kill everyone that isn't a muslim. when we gonna take em serious? Lark.
