    reloading question

a guy asked a question about c.o.l. jeffro said something that sounded real contrary to everything i've ever done, read, been taught, etc. i asked him to explain. instead i get catclaw calling me a liar, like he likes to do, because i don't have a fat barrel on my .300. nobody said or asked anything about compressed loads. when i get a load close to the desired velocity i usually get it where i want by tinkering with the overall length. seat it deeper to slow it down, longer to speed it up. as long as i'm within what the rifle likes as far as the distance from the bullet shoulder to the lands. the info i posted was the simplest description i could find of what i was saying. the less "jump" a bullet makes, the more pressure and velocity it makes, with equal powder charges. that's the rule. to everyone on this site, please disregard anything i've ever said about reloading. it ain't worth it being called a liar, when i'm trying to loan someone some experience. and again, with like loads, the less jump a bullet has, the more pressure it builds and the more velocity. and there ain't anything artificial about a pressure spike. pressure is pressure. it doesn't go away until it's relieved. Lark.

    reloading question

yep, that's what i said and if i'm wrong then so is joyce hornady and about every other reloader of any repute. i'm real astounded by your reply. but what do i know? i have a rifle that doesn't have a fat barrel, therefore, i don't know anything. i looked a little for something on the net i could post real easy, but couldn't find anything, so i'll hand type a couple paragraphs out my trusty ol' hornady reloading manual. 3rd edition. found the same info in sierra, hogdon and speer books. didn't look at any of the other ones. now you're sure that stuffing the bullet in farther makes more pressure and velocity? positive? there are some variables and i fullly agree with what 308 said because as long as you keep the shoulder of the bullet in the freebore area of the throat, it doesn't change things a lot. they change and measurably, but not to a great extent. at least not dangerously. and i think that's what he said. but i'll let him explain his thinking. i've talked with him enough to know he is extremely knowledgable and experienced and would trust him. now when you let the shoulder get close to the lands, you really see some changes. when a bullet is seated deep, it has farther to jump before it engages the lands. when the shoulder of the bullet engages the rifling is when pressure really sky rockets. and mean it gets high. 50 to 60 thousand psi in some cases. take it from a guy who built and maintaned steam boilers for a lotta years, that is a lotta pressure. no power plant sees more than maybe three thousand psi, and that will rip you into hamburger instantly. this isn't stuff to be foolish with. i never give anyone reloading data. but i will share experience. instead of just saying i'm right and someone is wrong, i'm gonna spend a few minutes on this, because i don't want anyone getting hurt. this is what the 3rd edition of the hornady reloading manual says. pages 18 and 19. it has some illustrations, but i don't have a way to post them. "to illustrate the effects of variations in bullet travel before the bullet enters the rifling, we'll compare a standard load with adjustments made only in the bullet's seating depth. in a "normal" load with the bullet seated to allow about a 32nd of an inch gap between the bullet and the intitial contact with the rifling, pressure builds very smoothly and steadily even as the bullet takes the riflings. pressure remains safe throughout the powder burning period, and the velocity obtained--3500 fps-- is normal for this load in this rifle. seating the bullet deeper to allow more travel before it takes the rifling, as in the next 2 illustrations, permits the bullet to get a good running start. (this is the real important part so pay attention everbuddy) 'POWDER GASES QUICKLY HAVE MORE ROOM IN WHICH TO EXPAND WITHOUT RESISTANCE', AND THEIR PRESSURE THUS NEVER REACHES THE 'NORMAL' LEVEL'. nor does the velocity, with same powder charge it only comes to 3400 fps. when the bullet is seated to touch the rifling, as in the accompanying illustrations, it does not move when the pressure is low and not having a good run at the rifling as did the other bullets, it greatly increases pressure to force it into the rifling. as the now rapidly expanding gases now find less room than should have at this time in their burning, the pressure rise under these conditions are both rapid and excessive. velocity is high at 3650 fps-- but at the expense of rather dangerous pressure." this is verbatim from the hornady manual. word for word. if i'm wrong, then so are buncha other folks that have a lot more experience than i do, and i didn't start reloading last week. a compressed load, with the bullet touching, or very close to the rifles, will create more pressure and velocity than a noncompressed load that is touching the rifling. because it has more powder. if it didn't it wouldn't be compressed. but we aren't talking about compressed loads. we're talking about c.o.l. in equal powder loads, the bullet seated deeper will not achieve the pressure or velocity of the bullet that is not seated as deep and is closer to the rifling. i don't know what more i can say on the subject. like i said earlier, unless the guys at hornady, nosler, sierra, speer and hogdon are all wrong, what i said in the earlier post is true. again, there are many variables; chambers tolerances, throat length, rifling integrity immediatly after the throat, differences in case wall thickness in different brands of brass, and especially in military brass, bullet jacket thickness, bullet composition, especially pure copper bullets, all have very defined and measurable affect on pressure and velocity. if you're going to reload, be careful. make sure you're doing it right and then check again. there's my rebuttal, refute if it you want. but i'm not wrong. and to anyone just starting to reload, please be careful and consult folks who have some experience at what they're doing. read up on it a bunch. modern rifles will take a lot of abuse, but when they reach critical pressure, things blow up. you're holding a contained explosion in your hands, next to your face, at pressures 20 times greter than a power plant makes. as long as things are done correctly, you shouldn't have a problem. be postivie you are correct. Lark.

    reloading question

from everything i've ever read and have been taught, the longer the col, the more pressure and velocity you'll see. seating the bullet deeper should drop pressure and velocity. you might see some pressure increase from a compressed load, but nothing like you'll see by having the bullet right on the lands. the closer the bullet is to the lands, the less time their is for expansion of gas before the bullet gets squeezed down the barrel. i won't go as far as to say you're wrong, but it goes against everything i've ever heard about reloading. i reload a bunch. thousands of rounds a year. i use a chronograph a bunch. i've never seen pressure or velocity go up by seating the bullet deeper. when barnes first came up with the x bullet they had special instructions for them that required seating them deeper and using reduced loads from what you would use for a like weight lead bullet, because the longer bullet caused so much more pressure. what cartridge are you seeing these results in? i'm more than a little interested. like .308 said, when you're seating bullets somewhere shorter than where the lands start, you shouldn't see a lot off difference in velocity or pressure. you can see some dramatic differences in accuracy tho. but again, from everything i've ever been learned up on, the closer the bullet is to the lands, in other words, the longer the col, more pressure and velocity is the rule. Vortex Riflescope and Binocular Sale

he said he liked it as well. when you figger the difference in price, he likes it better. the cheapest varix 2 3x9 i can find anywhere right now is about $300. this is a helluva lot better scope than that. real clear. nice skinny crosshairs. just a speck for a dot. like they should be. some dots are about the size of a pie plate. like i said, anybody that needs a scope and has a few bucks oughta jump on this deal. the way the adjustmant knobs are, you could set it up like a turret scope, using the existing dials, with a little shooting. i'm all excited. bought some colorado goat tags the other day. i can already see me aiming down this new vortex on one in octember. Lark.

    Vortex Riflescope and Binocular Sale

got my new scope today. what a great setup. my youngest son is here loading ammo and he wants to steal it from me. i didn't realize it was gonna be a 30mm tube. i really like dot reticles and they are really hard to find in a good scope. everyone has gone to the duplex. they're fine but for running game there is nothing better than a dot. except maybe a peep, but my eyes ain't that good anymore. i need magnification. anway, if any o' you flatlanders have been thinking about new scope, you best get in on this deal. soon as my wife is lookin' the other way, i'm gonna get another one. this is my first vortex, but my boys have scopes, spotters and binos in various configgerations and they are all great stuff. soon as he's done stuffin' bullets, we're headed to town for some new rings. was gonna put it on my 22/250, but this one is gonna go on my .264. even got a new hat and a package o' coffee. gr8fuldug, there is a photo in there. which one is you? Lark.

    Ggrrr we are mad!!

ernesto, go deep in the orchard and sit back to back with shotguns and call. it works really well. might just want to squeek call em to start with. and you get to see the look on their face just before the buckshot hits em. i lost all but one of my chickens a couple years ago. i went a coyote killin spree. even found a den with a buncha half growed pups not too far from the house. mucked em all out. killed a couple with my .45 while out riding my bike in the mornings. if you don't make it real hard on the coyotes and in a hurry, they'll kill everything you have. if trapping was legal, you could get even that way too. one other thing, gov't trappers are supposed to help out in a situation like that. if all else fails, make them earn their paycheck. good luck. Pray for AMANDA Please

well, glad you're feeling some better. what's your prognosis? when they sawed off the end o' my arm bone i told em i wanted the ball off it and i was gonna make me a bolo tie. but they didn't save it. said they forgot. and the dr is a friend o' mine. or he was. i've gutted a lotta critters for him too. i think a arm bone ball bolo tie would be cool. you can make ya a ear ring or somethin' outta that kidney stone. keep getting weller. Lark.

    WWYD?

wire a claymoore up to it. in powerplants they use a lot of this stuff called prussian blue. you use it when you scrape big bearings to get the right lube path. it's greasy stuff that is deep blue and one spot of it will end up all over you. guys always put it on the ear piece of phones and doorknobs and stuff. make a helluva mess. i vote to put prussian blue on the camera so the guy gets it all over him. you hafta wear it off. no soap will cut it. that or shoot his camera with a shotgun. or move someplace else and start another one so in a couple years somebody can come and steal it too. Lark.

i thought you were a hockey player? i figgerd you'da cut it out yourself. you oughta make some earing outta the stones. you sure you don't have a gizzard? you could make a little coin purse outta the bladder. well, glad you're home and getting well. lay offa the gorganzola cheeseburgers for awhile. keep up the recovery and get healed up soon. Lark.

What do you think he'll score?

somebody put ernesto's shoes back on him. he looked at his foot and saw that the elk had the same amount of toes and knew the rest o' the world all had 5 toes, but he has 6. that's about a 320 bull. nice bull. just not very old yet. looks like he has a chance to be a good one in a few more years. has very good 3rd points, but he's weak on the right side in the 5th point and main beam. Mexican Gray Wolf

heck, if you accidently kill one you go to prison. they have game wardens and wolf lovers literally living with them. how much more protection do they need? i guess they can close the woods to everyone except wolf people. i'm sure that's next. Lark.

    deliverance

in case anyone is interested, the documentary, deliverance, is on tonight at 11 on channel 391 on dish. most of ya don't know it, but gameholler is in it. he was the kid playin' the banjo. the funny thing is, he was playin' the part o' casey. when casey was that age he was way to ugly to be in a movie. ned beatty's role was based on ernesto i think. anyway, it's one of the most educational documentaries i've ever seen. don't miss it. Lark.

    Deer shed grown into tree!

i've seen several like that over the years. found a nice 4x4 muley set in an ocotillo once. they were grown into it pretty good. in unit 27 there is a place called saunder's cabin. there is a big 6 point shed that someone nailed to the tree by the first eyeguard by hammering a couple horseshoes around it. it has been there long enough that the entire base and first eyeguard are grown into the tree. at least 45 years that i know of. i think that the one in the photo is there naturally. unless it was a midget, a guy woulda put it up higher. those young trees grow pretty fast. it was probably quite small when the antler was shed. nature is pretty cool. anything that can happen, will. Lark.

Amanda - Congrats on AZG&F Grant Award

they pay ya to go pig huntin'? wonder how much they'd pay us to stay home? once there was a guy went sky divin' for the first time. he jumped out and his chute wouldnt open. yanked and yanked and yanked on the ripcord. tried the reserve, nothin'. he got all flummoxed and didn't know what to do. as he was speedin' to sure death he looked down and there was a guy comin' up just as fast. he didn't know what else to do so he hollerd at the guy as they were passin', "HEY, YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT PARACHUTES?!?!" the guy answered, "NO, YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT COLEMAN STOVES?"

Amanda - Congrats on AZG&F Grant Award

what unit are ya gonna hunt pigs in? we'll put in for that unit and me and bigjohn and our kids will camp by ya and show them wimmin how to not do it. spam, beans, questionable content stew, greasy gravy. 'course bigjohn has that sourdough down pat. we still use the old pump up coleman stoves and lanterns. not because they work good, but because we like the excitement of nonspecific intermittent explosions with a big ol' ball o' fire. we even get a few pigs and we get to work on our first aid skills every year. and i get a new tent and bedroll every year. Lark.
