Dad and I got skunked. This makes 38 YEARS in a row for my dad without a lope tag. I have a minimal 15 bonus points in comparison.. I know its the luck of the draw, but I dang this one was tough to swallow.

They Call me Hunter by Hunter Wells
2 Full Curls replied to wklman's topic in Hunting and Outdoors-related books
This book is unarguably the best hunting book I have ever read.. A trip back to the good ole days for sure. I always read a short story out of it before I go to bed before a morning of hunting. It gets me pumped every time -
I know its not a rifle or reloading question, but I figured this topic section was the best to consult... I am wanting to purchase a personal protection device (taser or stun gun) for both my sister and girlfriend. Both attend ASU and, although they each have pepper spray, I want to have something with a little more umph. Which is better? I have heard both, and I understand it depends on the user as well. I have been told that tasers can sometimes be non-effective when shooting through clothing? I have also been told stun guns dont have adequate knock-down power and are more noise makers? I have family members that own both and I am not sure which to buy. Any insight or opinion would be great. A preferred make or model of one or the other would be very helpful. Thanks guys for the input in advance. Best SW

Taser vs. Stun Gun?

oz31p & Vowell: Thanks guys for the input. I'll check both of those leads out. azslim: I have been told that Wasp Spray is the best that you can buy... even better than bear spray. But the cans are too dang big. They are more meant for a nightstand next to your bed I guess. But Ill look into a small can of bear spray for them.. Thxs -
Wow what a sheep. He sure is something to be proud of.

The Forest Service is a
2 Full Curls replied to coues7's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
Last year opening morning of my coues hunt... I watched a forest service helicopter fly above me and start fireballin' the canyons I was hunting. There's nothing like waiting for a ping pong ball to fall out of the sky above you, land next to your tripod, and ignite the sage. I have never been so upset as a hunter. They also had hot shot crews igniting "prescribed burns" in an area fairly close to me that I knew had one guy hunting in it out of a pup tent. I stopped a forest service vehicle later and told them, and they had no idea he was there. I went over there the next day and the saw that the fire had gotten to within 50 yards of his tent. We never got a warning leading up to my trip, or even the day before the hunt... just a few waves from the hot shot crews as they drove past my deer-less camp three days later. -
I agree with a little of everything that has been said. I have always grown up hearing my Dad and Grandpa talking about the "glory" days of seeing more deer on every hunt and pig herds over 100. The ironic thing is, the top-three largest coues that my Dad has ever seen have been on our hunts the last five years. It's a product of changing hunting styles, and equipment. My Dad grew up slow stalking his way through the woods and when a buck flagged you did your best to make a running shot. Now we have tripods and adaptors and swaro scopes. I know guys, and have heard my Dad tell stories from the late sixties and early seventies about guys, that put down some 120+ monster coues back then. But most of those stories involved hunting off horseback and "jumping" a BIG one. And the big animals that my family took back then... they never had a desire to measure them. Pictures were taken and if it was a 4X4 mulie or a 3X3 coues it got mounted. I'm 22 and love to hunt coues. I have been dreaming about getting behind my glass opening morning of my upcoming hunt. I know the equipment I have at my disposal gives me the best opportunity at harvesting a great buck. But with that said, I'd trade it all in second, to hunt how my dad grew up doing it. A LOT less people and more "hunter opportunity"!

I have another taxidermy question... A friend of mine just butchered a steer on his family ranch. He wants to save and clean the skull, however he doesn't know the best way to do it. He's not sure if he should try to boil it, and if so.. will boiling it ruin the teeth? The skull is large and would be difficult to boil. He also has heard that you can use beetles to clean a skull.? If you have any suggestions or recommendations they would much appreciated. Thanks guys!

This is a great thread... Last August I was archery turkey hunting up on the rim. I had spent all morning down in a canyon chasing birds but was never able to get within bow range. The monsoons had been rollin through periodically so the woods were quiet and wet. At about eleven thirty I decided that I was ready for a mid-day siesta and a cold drink back at camp with dad. So I climbed out of the steep hole I had been hunting and hit the old loggin' road back to camp. When I am archery hunting I never go anywhere fast, and I am constantly keeping my eyes peeled. But when I got within eyesight of camp I paused and took a break. I put my bow in my off hand so I could use my other to get a drink from my pack. After a two second drink, I look up and there are two 10"+ toms broadside....8 yds. in the road in front of me. There was a stand of small jack pines to my right that they had come from, and none of us knew the other was there. As soon as I slowly started moving my bow to the correct hand, they caught the movement and booked it...... right towards camp. They ran twenty yds. from the campfire and my dad taking a nap in the pickup bed! I'll never forget it.

I have been considering purchasing the Eye Shield from the CWT.com store... any body own/ use these while glassing? What are your opinions on them? Also.. I wear my eye glasses while glassing. Do any of you who wear glasses know if the Eye Shield still fits comfortably around them? Thanks for the input

I have an elk rack that I want to hang on the gable ends of the outside of my barn. I want to preserve the antlers the best I can since this rack is relatively new and still has a bit of the brown coloring. I am by no means a taxidermist and all the sheds/ skull finds that I have found have always been very weathered. What can I do/ apply to the antlers to preserve their color? The rack will get good shade throughout the day, but it will be subjected to the high summer temps of the valley. Thanks in advance for your pointers.

Tony, Thank you for that explanation. The process of developing a proposition initiative has always been somewhat confusing to me, and your post certainly answered my questions. As for prop 109... I wish more of my fellow college students cared. Despite my persuasions and persistence, many of my friends did not take the time to vote this past election. If the Humane Society goes after lion hunting on the next ballot, I'm going to do everything thing I can to stimulate some young voter opposition here at ASU.

Tony thank you for the suggestion

All I can say is.... Great Rack!

Tyler, I bought a velcro mount for my backup nikons at Outdoorsmans last fall. They were fairly inexpensive. Just a thought if you haven't checked it out already.

Great deer! Congrats to your Dad. I love those bowl-shaped racks.
