  1. Game and Fish called me the other day and said a tag holder for unit 21 mule deer December 14-31 surrendered his permit and offered it to me since I would have been next in line the draw (what are the odds). I told the nice lady that I would take it. I do know that 21 isn't known as a trophy unit. I do know it is a tough unit to find and big buck in and even tougher to kill him even in December. I know that December is usually marginal for rutting activity. That said, I am not looking for a giant but would really like to take a solid 4 point. Even if its only a 150 class. It has been many years since I hunted 21. I bowhunted it religiously in the 90s and chased many GIANT bucks around 'Desert HIlls' just north of Phoenix. Not only is that area no longer 21, I'm sure land development and years of rifle hunting/archery hunting has taken a toll on the quality and number of bucks in the region. All that said, I am happy to have 18 days of longer days and warmer air away from my home where it will be dark and butt cold in December glassing up deer in the desert. I wasn't interested in another late whitetail tag, I know I'm never going to draw a strip tag. I have been trying to draw a late mulie tag since they became available. And here we are. So.....how big of a mistake did I make taking this opportunity? I'm sure 27 would have been better but I'm all in for 21 now. Are there any decent bucks left? I was considering hunting the New River Mountains area. Maybe the foothills of New River Mesa both north and south of the Mesa. What do you think? M
  2. You can get bases with a downhill slope. Essentially it allows the objective to be at lower plane than the eyepiece. The whole scope will be at an angle in relation to the receiver instead of level. Yes, I’ll allow you to extend your range by the MOA value you choose. 20 MOA rails are the most common. here’s an example: https://www.opticsplanet.com/nightforce-1-piece-20-moa-base-for-savage-new-style.html
  3. Do you have an MOA base? You can get tapered rails to 40MOA
  4. I own both. Two of each. They’re both great. Both have advantages in given categories and neither make the other obsolete. Match your load to your circumstances with either and you’ll do alright. the biggest argument among 308 haters is that the 308 has waaay more windage than the CM. That’s very true if you’re not compensating at all and you’re running light bullets. My best CM load has 51” of 10MPH wind at a grand at my average hunting elevations and temps. My best 308 is 55” but comes with higher recoil yet also has over 200’# more energy. This is comparing the 147 versus the 208. Both heavy for caliber options. One of my favorite 308 loads has 62” of wind (176ATIP loaded fast) which is 11” further out than my CM load. Either way, it’s a missed target. Any long range shooter worth their salt would never not compensate for wind. It’s the misjudged that causes the errors. An error does NOT mean you’ll miss by 11” more inches versus the CM. Let’s say you judge 10MPH but it’s actually 7MPH. It’s a 3.3” difference not 11”. The gap is much closer than most shooters realize and a bad wind call is a bad wind call. Flatter trajectory is helpful but not critical since the advent of affordable range finders. Lower recoil is nice too but between the two isn’t a dealbreaker. 308 Advantages = Phenomenal barrel life, higher impact energy. 6.5 CM Advantages = lower recoil, flatter trajectory, slightly better windage. 308 offers manageable recoil and the CM offers reasonable barrel life. Windage difference is negligible unless using old bullet styles and lighter weights. For deer size game, both have adequate energy. pick one in a quality platform and use heavy for caliber bullets and it’s hard to fail with either. Personally I prefer the 308 but I don’t feel handicapped with the CM.

    Synthetics vs wool

After hunting in AK for years with synthetics, I made the switch to wool and have not looked back. It regulates your temperature like synthetics but doesn’t promote bacteria growth like synthetics. I can pack one shirt on a sheep hunt and come home after five days of sweating and barely have body odor. After 1/2 day of sweating in a poly shirt I can’t stand myself. I can pack less clothes which is huge on a backpack trip. Just my preference.
  6. Looking for 147 ELDM. I’ve got a list below of items for trade: 140 ELDM 140 VLDH 140 SST 143 ELDX 162 ELDX 190 ABLR 200 ELDX 208 AMAX Nosler 280AI brass. Some virgin and some fired. 6.5x284 Lapua brass virgin.
  7. Sounds good. I’ve got two sealed boxes from the same lot with your name on them. I’ll PM you in a couple of hours. In the middle of something rn.
  8. I’m not looking to sell. It seems like I have more buying power with trading. I have 300 but 100 are spoken for.

    Tick Tock

Again all joking aside, if you want to be taken seriously, you need to do a lot better. I’m not one to correct every grammatical error but your communication skills need a lot of improvement. That’s probably why so many guys are razzing you so much. I’m sorry if I poked fun at your expense. Seriously though, take a break.

All joking aside, how old are you?

Correct. We don’t need an alternative profile to show the size of our balls. Lol!

I used to be part of their program. I canceled my membership sometime after that.
  14. I meant other members posts... I hope the draw happens really quick!

    Tick Tock

This is nothing compared to the crap show in 2004 when USO threw a wrench in the gears. Granted, that wasn’t AZGFD’s fault but they had to do a complete re-draw.
  16. It’s been entertaining so far. I’ve been needing a couple of good laughs lately.
  17. I agree. Not knowing if I killed seven deer or about seven deer would drive me insane. Too much uncertainty.
  18. 🤣 about 7 deer? Or 7 deer? Get it right. Your credibility is at stake here. I predict you will be banned again.
  19. You’ve been a member for a whopping 20 hours. You’re a noob.
  20. Can you judge when your rifle is perfectly level in the field? It isn't as easy as you might think. When you look at the hands on a wall mounted clock when the minute hand is 1 minute past the hour, do you think if your rifle is canted the same angle as that minute hand that this is enough to worry about in the field? If you answered yes to the above question, you likely already understand how important it is to hold your rifle level for a precision shot. If you answered no, I would like to illustrate how important it is. First, one minute past the hour really does'nt look like much. Even two minutes does not look too bad. One minute past the hour is 6 degrees. How much can that hurt you? The long answer is that it depends on your distance, zero range, velocity etc......The short answer is for long range shots, it hurts you alot. Why? Below are two pictures that help illustrate the principal of why it happens. You need to remember that your rifle's barrel is tilted up to get the bullet to cross your scope's line of sight. If you envision a bullet leaving the muzzle on a path where it ends up above your line of sight to the target so that it may drop down into the target. Now envision holding your crosshairs dead on the target but the rifle is held at 90 degrees where your scope is on the right hand side of the barel instead of straight up and down. Now the barrel is no longer tilted up but angled to the right. The bullet's path no longer is up but it is now to the right. It still is on a path that will put itself in line with the crosshairs, but straight right not straight up where it should be. When the rifle is canted to the right, impacts low and right will occur. To the left and impacts will be low and left. How much so will depend on how many degrees the rifle is canted. Remember, one minute past the hour is only 6 degrees. It is very hard to judge that in the field. So, how much though will 6 degrees affect the impact? For one of my favorite rifle and load combinations, it works out to 11" at 600 yards. For another rifle/load combo it is 10". Add another 200 yards and it doubles to 20". That is a gut shot, a hind leg shot or a clean miss on a coues buck or even an elk. Hence the reason I use a scope mounted bubble level. They are cheap light and very effective. They are worth their weight in gold twice over when trying to cleanly kill a coues buck at long range. The link below is just one of several options available. http://www.sinclairintl.com/.aspx/pid=3490...nti_Cant_Device The illustrations below should help you understand why. Obviously, the pictures above show the worst case scenario. No body is going to shoot at a coues buck with the rifle canted 90 degrees. The point is to exaggerate for clarity. The less the rifle is canted, the less more precise it will be. M

    Desert Muzzy Hunt

I’m curious (I have little knowledge or opinion on moon phases), why do you think the first weekend’s moon phase bad? Do you think it’ll be better full or third quarter?
  22. I can’t vouch for the browning but I have the Mesa in 6.5 cm. It’s an excellent rifle. Put together very nicely. It is a tack driver with Hornady ammo.
  23. That’s what I’m using.
  24. 59.5 H4831SC under the 162 ELDM for my 280AI is one of the sweetest loads I’ve ever had in any rifle. 9–1/2 large rifle primer. Velocity is 2931’sec. You can get better velocity with other powers but the consistency and accuracy of 4831SC is phenomenal. Temp stability is good and my ESs are in single digits.
