Ideally, you need to be in a position and position the rifle against you body in a way so that it comes STRAIGHT back. If you let the butt shift to the left or right, there will be consistency problems. Some say that 'loading' the bipod is the best way. If done properly, can be great but it has to be consistent. It can also change your poi from sighting in the bench. I find if I don't load the bipod and let it come back, my consistency is better and my poi doesn't shift between the bench and prone in the field. Also I find in matches shooting in F-TR class my groups are much tighter and horizontal spreads are virtually non-existent if I just let her slide straight back. But you cannot underestimate butt to shoulder position. It has to be square against your body or it will follow the path to where it needs to be and it won't be straight. Better get it where it needs to be in the first place. M

remington 700 sendero nightmare
308Nut replied to 5guyshunting's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
A lot of good advice here so far. Definately make sure the action screws are torqued evenly. 65# is the widely accepted standard for stocks that aren't like Tupperware. Though most of the time improper torque won't make for 6" groups. Definately investigate the scope. I had a full on custom 308 that shot almost that bad with some loads and didn't shoot any other loads very well either. After 1100 rounds and a summer of frustration I finally found a sweet load. Then I would periodically take the whole gun apart for cleaning and such and noticed that every time I did this it would shoot bad. I'd take it apart and put it back together. Sometimes it would shoot good. After doing this a time or two then it would suck. Turns out it was a simple matter of bad scope mounting. Once I fixed that, it was a solid .3 MOA rifle. A one peice bedded scope base works wonders. So does proper ring alignment and getting top caps AND cross bolts torqued properly. It helps some ring if they're lapped. Is your barrel free floated? Is your crown crisp? If it turns out that it really is a lemon, Remington has been pretty good in the past about looking it over and test firing them. If they won't print 1MOA they usually will rectify it. On a side note, if you ever send it in, pull you aftermarket trigger out and re-install the factory trigger. They WILL remove your trigger and throw it away, install a new factor trigger and charge you for it. I hope you get it figured out. M -
Yup. It's way off. Question: Do you know why anybody would shoot 150 grain offerings in a 308? Answer: To make a 7mm or 270 look good.

Both are great. Both have advantages over the other. Neither blow the other out of the water and neither are superior in every category.

Drew my 1st elk tag in 1995. 7 archery bull. Lost a 350+ bull. Was hit in a very poor location with nearly no penetration. I'm sure he survived. 2004 drew my second tag. Took a 5x5 on the last morning.

There is a smaller second rut for lack of a better term. When doe deer are not bred, they go back into heat roughly 28-30 days later. Younger females can season a bit later. It is very possible for breeding to happen in March.

Smokeless rifle powder burns better than it explodes. Storing it in a safe would probably make for quite a bomb if in larger quantities since it would be in a tight space. On a shelf in the garage won't make much of a bang. Black powder on the other hand is another story. It doesn't have to be confined to make a dramatic bang.

*Video* 300 RUM, .260 Remington, and 6.5x284 Going Long!
308Nut replied to gaps's topic in Long Range Shooting
Gaps, You can add me to the list of those who've never had a 215 fail. I've probably ignited 3k of them over the years and triple that in 210s. Never had any of them fail. Through several thousand BR2s I've never had any fail despite the fact that BR2s are CCIs but the 200s and 250 have on a regular basis from different lots years apart. I hope you get her fixed soon. Sounds possible. I only asked if they were CCI because I have had a lot of them not ignite in several different calibers and several different actions yet I've never had another brand fail.- 13 replies

A deadline is a deadline. If you wait till the last minute and the site fails, it should be too bad. Remember when you use to have to mail applications in or drop them off by 7pm. The back door of the truck was shut at 7pm sharp. If you had a flat tire on the way and showed up at 7:00.01 guess what? You didn't get to apply. Better have sucked it up and applied earlier the next year. There is a note on the Alaska department of fish and game website during the application period that specially states (in so many words) that you should apply early because if the site goes down before the deadline due to overload, too bad so sad, better luck next year. The deadline is final no exceptions. Too bad more states aren't like this. The whole purpose AZ split up the draws for elk/antelope in the first place was because many of those hunts are so early. They should keep it early. Hopefully we will know before the NM deadline.

Heck if I thought I could get 1500 consistent rounds out of this, I'd be first in line. If the 6.5x284 won't go 1500 rounds, it's a pipe dream to think that this cartridge will. I flat out baby mine and still hasn't made 800 rounds without taking a total crap. Even after a 1" set back and 1" off the muzzle. Maybe my accuracy standards are too high who knows. Good barrel life isn't everything but for guys that like to practice a lot, this one won't be very appealing. Reading paper ballistics is always more fun than shelling out paper with Benjamin's face printed on it. Which is something you will have to put up with if you spend much time behind a rifle chambered in 26 Noslers. It really sucks to have a 'hummer' barrel only to find out it won't last long enough to enjoy it.

With all the practical jokers about the draw results coming...

I just could not resist posting this... -
I'm getting a 50$$ refund. WHICH MEANS I DREW AN ELK TAG!!!!! Official results will be posted in the A.M.
-
If you do a search for wyoming auditors office, you can go to their page and click the link for vendor payments. There you search for your name. You'll see if your getting a refund and for how much. Full refund minus 50$ means you didn't draw. 50$ refund means you drew your first choice. No refund means you drew your second choice. M

That's awesome!! So true. Sad but true... -
Page one of this thread. Post #5. The bullet on the right was pulled out of a dall sheep fired from a 300 RUM. 200 grain accubond.
-
Looks like a great cartridge for those that can't afford laser rangefinders. It's been rumored that they'll offer a higher BC 140 than the 140 ballistic tip and accubond they already offer at some point. I'm guessing it'll be a while since that can't seem to produce much of what they announced a couple of years ago. I'm with pwrguy on this one. Too many other good choices to get excited about this one.

ROFLMAO!!! That's good stuff there!

Found your thread in bow hunting. Yup! I had you confused with somebody else. Sorry about that. M
-
Didn't you just draw? 5 points? Maybe I have you confused with somebody else. You're missing out on some pretty nice deer right now right in your own unit. Gotta just keep at it. Sooner or later, you'll miss stepping on that twig and the stars will align. You could kill 5 nice bucks in your own unit in January by the time you draw your strip tag. If you want a biggun you're going to have to pay with $$ or time. Possibly both. Finding a good buck and waiting for him to make a mistake takes time. Lots and lots of time. It'll take you years to draw the strip, cost you a ton of time and fuel to scout or a lot of $$ to hire a guide and there's still no guarantee you'll harvest a big one. My advice, get off the computer and sight in your bow, go hunting. The time is now. It doesn't get much better than what you have staring you in the face right now. Post pix when you make your kill.

I was just in the Anchorage sportsman's warehouse a few minutes ago and saw that picture on the bragging board. Small world. It's a great bull which deserves a big congrats and a bit of brag but it annoys the living crap out of me when people post 8.5x11" posters on such small boards. Leaves little room for everybody else's pictures which for the most part are a humble 5x7".
