    You Decide...

There in lies the problem. My idea of full potential is different from yours and from many other hunters and vice versa. As long as you keep it within the law and I as well, it isnt about you or I for that matter understanding why one hunter wishes to do it his way. We all know you prefer to get close. We all know that I like to be far. You dont need to understand why I like to do it the way I do, but you do have to accept it since I do what I do with in the boundaries of the law as well as I have to accept the fact that you do what you do because you do it within the boundaries of the law. Not everybody will want to do it your way even if you dont understand it.

    You Decide...

To me, 'fair chase' means hunting within the limits of the law. In Arizona there is a 30 minute before and after sun rise and sun set rule. To shoot game before or after legal shooting light is NOT fair chase. In Alaska there is no such absurd rule. We can hunt 24 hours a day 7 days a week as long as we use natural light. That said, if I shoot an animal 3 hours after sun set because I use a high quality scope that lets in a good amount of light during a full moon where I can see the animal well enough to make a clean kill, that IS fair chase. I have never shot at anything 3 hours after sun set but I have nearly 2 hours after sun set. To me, because it was legal IS fair chase. Shoot 2 yards, 200 yards, 2000 yards what ever, if there are no laws against it, then it IS fair chase. Not to be confused with responsible. In Idaho there is a weight limit on hunting rifles. This is to prevent hunters from sitting on mountain tops with 50BMG's and ultra long range rifles taking shots at 2000 and 3000 yards. There is no law however that says a hunter cannot shoot 2000 or 3000 yards with a 12# rifle. Keep it under 16# and itis fair chase.

    Dall Sheep

I do not. Looks like he was 8 years old for sure. Maybe 9? What did ADF&G age him at?

    Applying In Other States?

It sounds like this question is geared more for AZ residents but I'll throw in my application activities. First off, AZ is my favorate place to hunt. Elk, coues bucks, desert mulies etc......Even though AZ is my favorate place, I love hunting traditional 'western' big game plain and simple. Since good AZ tags are so hard to come by my statagey is to build my points till I have the max points for the current trend for the hunts I want. Then I burn them. In effect, I take a number, get in line and wait my turn.... I have to admit, it was VERY hard for me this year to not burn my points on a good archery elk hunt this year but felt by playing the odds for the best season dates (in theory) that my points would be best burned next year. That said, I apply in quite a few states every year for more western big game hunting opprotunities. Depending on how much cash I have and/or time in a given year will depend on whether or not I only apply for points in most states or if I go for gold. AK Sheep, caribou, elk. AZ Deer, elk, sheep, lope WY Elk UT Elk, sheep, deer, lope NM Elk NV Elk, sheep, lope, deer CO Elk, lope, deer I use to apply in CA for desert big horns but gave up. I am going to start applying for WY deer and lope. Also will start applying for NM lope. All in all, I spend thousands of dollars applying in other states, 1000 of which is on licenses and application fees that are NOT refundable. I burn 1K every year but it goes to a good cause. My dollars will contribute to the quality of my experience once I get drawn and go hunting. Having 2 young kids in the house money can be an obsticle most of the time. I work super super hard at managing my money to be able to apply for and pay for tags as well as have enough dough to go. Airfare, food, gas, supplies the list goes on and on. You all know how much I love to shoot and thats not cheap either. Range memberships cost me 350 bucks a year, several pounds of powder (25 to 50 bucks a pound) and 750-2000 bullets (.30 to .90 per bullet) depending on the year. The key is I watch my finances and have a yearly plan that gets adjusted every time money is saved and/or spent on hunting plans or taxidermy bills (750-1500 bucks depending on the year). It is alot of work and frustrating at times but rewarding in the end. It also helps that I have a wonderfull woman who does'nt spend as much as me and does'nt want to and wants me to live my dreams. How the he!! did I get so blessed? I have no idea but I am forever gratefull to the Big Boss upstairs and to my woman.

    Help! Good .308 Elk Bullet

Was that barnes a triple shock x, tiopped triple shock x, mrx, or other? That was back when they were the 'XBT', It was virtually the same thing as the TSX is now without the grooves. The bearing surface was just straight and smooth like the Nosler E-Tip is now except the XBT was a hollow point like the TSX.

    Help! Good .308 Elk Bullet

I have never shot an elk with the 308 but have shot 3 bull moose with the 308. Out of the 3 the best performance I had was with the 180 Barnes. After shooting two other bulls with some other types of bullets I would highly recommend sticking to the Barnes, ACCUBOND, INTERBOND, Partition, A-Frame, GMX etc...If you are keeping your shots to 300-400 yards, the BC is of very little concern. The concern here is penetration and durability. The above bullets will get you there. 150's are ok, 165-168's are better and the 180's are better yet. Barnes is comeing out with a new 175LRX. This will be a cream of the crop hunting bullet for the 308 winnie. The only other bullet I would use is the 200 Sierra Game King. Emphasis on Game King. Remington CoreLokts are a great choice as well. Stay away from the SMK, AMAX, and Bergers for the 308 and elk. These combos will work great in some circumstances and leave you high and dry in others. The top bullets mantioned can screw you too but they are ALOT less likely to do so. BTW those bullets listed above will easily handle an elk at 400 yards and then some. Even with the pea shooter 308 winnie. M

  10. How difficult would it be to set up a fund or account for Steve to raise money for the auction to try and get his antlers back? Only God knows how much they will go for. Maybe a paypal account in his name? A bank account in his name? Any thoughts or ideas? Am I barking up the wrong tree?? I am willing to donate to the cause if there is a secure reliable way to ensure it would go directly to Steve. Help?? M

    It has been bugging me…

Sir, that was my point. Just because some one is good at art and enjoys it does NOT automatically make them gay. I have been known to draw wildlife art as well. I am not gay either. That was my point. It has been said that if you shoot long range then you are lazy. Just because I like to shoot long range and am good at it does not make me lazy either. Sorry if you took my coment the wrong way. M

    New rifel

When the throat errodes (in short order) and the added friction causes the pressures to sky rocket, you will be reducing your loads to the point of near 300WSM velocities. May as well just get the 300WSM and spare you the headaches. That said, there is a whole host of other great calibers out there that are more 'user friendly' and cheaper to operate than the 300RUM. The bottom line is that the above is only one man's opinion (mine). You should get what would make you feel good at the end of the day. M

    It has been bugging me…

So I guess if your talent was art work, then by drawing or painting pictures (doing what you're good at and enjoy) that would automatically make you gay?!
  17. Persistance pays, its not if but when, sometimes all you need is a bit more effort......... Good job for understanding the above statements. Congrats! M
  18. Not bad. Glad to see you finally made it out. Is that buck where I think he is? (BM)
  19. After a very cold, windy, snowy hunt in November 2009, I dropped off my billy goat to the taxidermist. Now, 14 months later I have picked up my prize. I think he is about the most majestic specimen I have taken to date. Before: After:

    swaros question

Yes this happens with all brands. It has nothing to do with Swarovski. Under the jacket helps as stated above. On the dash of your vehicle with the defrost heater going. When hunting the backcountry, I put them in my sleeping bag with me a couple of hours before it is time to get up. Once I get up the stay on my body under my coat. Yes it is a pain. No there is no bullet proof way to deal with it. M
