    New to hunting. Any tips?

+1!!! If you must then I would say be patient. Not only during your hunt but also over the next few years while you learn the ins and outs. Be persistent, thourogh, pay attention to detail and take note of any possible clues. Every clue tells a story. Some clues may only give you a letter or two. Some clues give you a sentence. A few will give you a paragraph and fewer yet will give you a whole chapter. The goal is that in the end all the clues will add up to make a book. When you get to the end of the book you should be standing over you harvested game. Sometimes you just stumble on game but most of the time you have to work very hard for it by piecing the book together using the clues you have available to you.

"The Draw" and a new topic....

I got tag checked in 1994. The officer actually used his radio to call the GFD office to verify it was a real tag and that the tag number matched my name. He saw that it was not signed, reminded me that this was a violation and asked me to validate my tag by signing it, offered me a pen, I signed it, he thanked me for my time and we went our sperate ways. All in all he was cool. I was technically in violation carrying my tag without having signed it and he was cool about it. I appreciated the fact that he treated it as the minor issue that it was and just let me sign it instead of making a big deal out of it and causing all kinds of trouble for me. I can live with game cops as long as they are not as rigid as phone poles.

How many bonus points do you have

I am tellin ya, just move up here. Buy a license for 25 bucks and the tag is free!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have 5 legal rams picked out this year already. 2 of them are ready to keel over from old age at any time. Charlie has 7 picked out. Its gonna be a good year for sheep. I will be gunnin for my 7th ram and 5th mount. I know that is more than my fair share but it is one of the few things that keep me putting up with these aweful winters and in most cases aweful summers as well. This summer so far though has been a dream come true. Lots of sun and warmth without the freakin smoke. BTW, as far as AZDBHS is concerned, enough points I do not have but the ones I do have are better than nothing at all.

    this is for 308nut

Been using 290 Barnes and Blackhorn 209 powder. Accuracy has been awesome so far. I have only had it out as far as 200 yards. I would like to try 300 before the season. In any even, I can live with 200 yards. It is already better and farther that I had hoped for. Thanks, Michael

    308 loads

If you are already running RL15 (a great choice) you could try 42.0 to 45.0 under the 178 AMAX. Start with 42 and work up slowly. Dont jump right to 45. Also you might try the 168 AMAX with similar charges (42-46). CCI BR2 or Federal 210 Gold Medal Match primers work great. RL15 and the 168, 178 is a scary accurate combo for a decent shooting 308. Hope that helps. Let us know how it works out.

    Dall sheep scouting Y2K11

There is no where to land a plane within nearly 10 miles of this area. I used to have to wheeler in and hike 7 air miles. Now I have a route that gets me within 2 walking miles but it entails a fair amount of steep side hilling which is hard on the feet and one steep nasty drainage with one tight spot that could hurt you if you slipped. Regardless, it takes alot less time and effort to go that 2 walking miles than hike 7 air miles (9+ walking miles according to Google Earth).

    Dall sheep scouting Y2K11

Well since 2009, I have been watching a 7 or 8 year old ram grow. He was of decent size but had no character. Now that he is 9 or 10 (9 for sure but I think 10) he is broomed on one side and has several chips on the top of his horns. He also has scars on his face. I think after watching him grow for a couple of years and shape into an old warlord that I am going to pull the trigger this year. I did't get any pictures of him or his full curl buddy. They were to close to me and I could not afford to make the extra movement and ruccus. On that note, yesterday morning my camp was invaded by several ewes and lambs. This time I got some pictures.
  11. I used to be a huge Smartwool sock fan but after trying a pair of Dahlgren 'Alpaca' backpacking socks I will be ordering several more pairs. Smartwool socks don't hold a candle against them. I wore them the first day into my sheep area. I did'nt think anything of it until I wore my Smartwools the next morning. Then I realized something was missing. Soon after I started my decent off the mountain, the bottom of my big toes were hurting pretty good. After realizing how good my feet felt the day before, I stopped and changed back to the Alpacas. WOW! they provided so much cushion it was incredible. My feet have never been in such good shape after a backpacking trip carrying heavy loads down very steep mountains. Needless to say, my toes did not hurt one bit during the rest of the trip. They get 5/5 stars in my book and a super A++++++++. They don't stink as much either. http://www.dahlgrenfootwear.com/socks/outdoor-hiking/backpacking/

    Favorite Coues Deer Rifle.

For up to 600 yards, the 308 is my goto rifle. Extreme precision, lethal, minimal recoil, cheap to operate and barrels last 1/2 of forever.

    Nylon or bronze brush?

Aside from reversing a bronze brush in a barrel, there is no proof that a bronze brush will damage the interior of a barrel. Remember, you are ram rodding hundreds of grains of copper, lead and unburned soon to become burned powder down your barrel at high velocity while generating scorching heat, flame and pressure. Seems to me like a bronze brush is the least of your worries. I have been using them for quite a while. Like anything else, if done properly, they work just fine. You risk more damage from crud becoming imbedded in you cleaning rod and not using a good bore guide than from a clean bronze brush.

    Kenetrek Desert Guide Boots

I have learned the hard way that you just about cant spend enough when it comes to good boots that dont kill your feet or back or kill you from letting you fall down the rocks. Glass is important, rifles are important etc.....but the boots are going to determine if you are going to get to use those other things. Unless you are a road hunter of course.

    Need some help...

I have 20/800 vision (dam^ near blind) with an astigmatism in both eyes. Both eyes are very close to the same. I wear contacts most of the time. Currently they make soft lenses to correct astigmatisms. With the strength range of my contacts I only half 1/2 strength increments to choose from. I really need 1/4 size for optimum vision. This sucks for me as most eye doctors want to put you in the next size down. I finally talked mine into giving me the next stronger for my right eye. I shoot very well with my contacts. It sounds like if you dont need corrective lenses all the time you may be in the range of having 1/4 strength increments available to you. As long as I use lenses for astigmatism my vision is pretty clear and sharp. As far as glasses, I shoot ok with them as long as my bow sight is a pin set up. When I shot competition freestyle using a scope lense I could NOT make any combination of lense or peep clarifier work for crap. Talk to your eye doctor and explain your needs and requirments. If he cant or wont work with you, find a new one. They should let you try different lenses right there in their office. I know one up here who let a guy bring his bow into the office to test different lenses. Unfortunately, I dont know any eye doctors in the valley. Hope that helps.

    difficult bolt turn

Try chambering and empty piece of brass after FL sizing. If it is hard to lock the bolt then it is you resizing methods. If it chambers fine and only loaded rounds are tight, then check your overall cartridge length INCLUDING your primer depth.
  17. I use my EL 10x42 on a tri-pod for glassing while sitting and wear the same binos for hiking and stalking. They do just fine for both. That said, I do like the 15's my cousin uses for coues searching.

    7 Pin Sights

The Axcel is superb. I like it much better than the Spot hoggs. It is extremely precise and micro adjustable. It is not the lightest but if you want precision, this one is tough to beat.
  19. To battle the inconsistency, most guys use a standard throw and set them a bit low. Then they fill the scale and add the rest via a trickler set up right next to the scale. If it clogs during the throw, a good tap or two typically will free it up.

    Questions from a newbie

It is hard to say since we dont know if this is a late hunt or an early hunt. If it is an early hunt, bucks are a bit more predictable. This is good for your situation since your range is limited. An ambush is in order. Much more possible in the early season. In the late season however, they can be unpredictable and move very fast. This is where glassing your eyes out and being able to reach out a bit further. Dont let that scare you though. There are plenty of guys here that regularly kill nice bucks in the rut with their bows. You will need to ask yourself how your own hunting skills are. How close do you think you can get? An honest self examination will tell you what you need to do. Happy hunting!

    breaking in a barrel

That is well and good but you cannot compare quality finished custom barrels to factory barrels. You can improve a factory barrel. It is very unlikely that you can improve a good custom barrel. Hence the reason several barrel makers and shooters dont break them in. On that note there are several top makers and shooters that do promote breaking in and cleaning more regularly. Who knows, maybe both ideas are meant to wear your barrel out faster so they can sell you another one. The truth likely lays in the middle somewhere. When it comes to factory tubes or re-bored and re-rifled barrels, breaking them in has a place for sure.

    breaking in a barrel

You sure as heck are not going to ruin a factory barrel with a bronze brush.

    Knight KRB7?

No. I have tried the TC shockwave 250 and 300, a variety of the precision rifle line and some hornadys. Overall, it seems like the TMZ's group really well and yes, it kicks like a mule!
  24. Any opinions on the Knight KRB7 muzzleloader? I am in the market for a new ML and have NO clue where to start. I have handled several and like the feel, fit and function of the KRB7. I have heard a few complaints about ignition? Some think it is a primer selection problem. The last thing I want to do is have a FUBAR with a bull in the sights. What do you all think? I am a COMPLETE muzzleloader virgin. Thanks for any help or opinions.

    Knight KRB7?

I have settled on the TC bone collector with the 290 TMZ over 115 grains of BH209 powder under the CCI 209 primer. Getting awesome accuracy and consistency out of it. thanks,
