Need Help with choosing .243 or 7mm-08 Remington/Savage or Ruger???
Stallone A. posted a topic in Youth Hunters
Hello, I know this topic has come up more than once in the past however I read all past posts and did not find any topics on which brand to buy. My sons 10th B-day is on Thurs and I wanted to surprise him with a hunting rifle. I am interested in a couple of things number one is Action and the others are Trigger and Bolt. I have heard many good things about the Savage Axis but all my rifles are Remington so I don't know what to expect from the savage or even Ruger American. (We all know there are more aftermarket parts for Remington than any other maker). Overall for a youth hunting rifle what would you suggest I buy? I think Remington is probably the heaviest at 7.25lbs as the others are 6.5lbs. Also, price for Savage Axis is on sale this week at Cabelas for $309 (not too bad). I don't want to make this a battle match, I just want peoples suggestions on what they like about their rifles and why. Thanks for your help in advance. -

Need Help with choosing .243 or 7mm-08 Remington/Savage or Ruger???
Stallone A. replied to Stallone A.'s topic in Youth Hunters
I took my 8 year old son shooting on Sunday and I tried posting the video's which are hilarious to see. Remember this is my 8 year old not 10 year old. We went shooting since I promised them both I would take them however the 10 year old was not feeling so great so I took my younger son and nephew to shoot. We started off shooting the 22LR like always and they were having a blast. Then I took out the .243 and I shot a couple of rounds and right away my youngest says dad can I be next… I was a like sure so I have a tripod set up so that they can lean the gun on. So I fooled him without putting in a round and I say ok go ahead and shoot. I wanted to see if he was going to flinch and he just picked up the rifle like he was going to shoot the 22LR and aimed and of course nothing happened. He said Dad its broken I laughed and told him I was testing to see how he handled the rifle. So I loaded it this time and stood by him for his first shot. He aimed at the target and shot Bam almost bulls eye at 50yrds. He looked at me and said Dad this is awesome. I said it didn't hurt he said not really just a little. He quickly said can I shoot it again, I said of course. He shot a couple more rounds and said can I try the next gun. I couldn't believe that he was handling the gun like a champ and the kick really didn't seem to effect him. So I loaded the 7mm-08 I shot a couple of rounds just to test it out and noticed that the kick was a little harder on this rifle. I explained to him that the gun gave a little more of a kick than the .243 but he wanted to shoot it. We loaded the gun I faked him out again and this time he flinched a little. I told him that is the worst thing you can do is flinch when shooting, so we gave it a couple of practice shots with no ammo and then put one in. I stood by him on the first shot, and you noticed once he pulled the trigger the gun did jump a lot more off the tripod. ( I was amazed that he was not scared). He said dad again we loaded up again, he must have taken 4 shots and said Dad I like the other gun better. I asked him why, (he said I can shoot it better). This goes to show that even though he new the 7mm-08 was the stronger gun he made his decision that he liked the .243 better because he was able to shoot it better. I wish I could upload the videos so you can see him in action. What a tough little kid and a smart one to. I think my 8 year old has made the decision for me and I think I will be purchasing a .243 over the 7mm-08. I still have to take the 10yr old shooting but I think he will be smart like his brother and choose the gun that he will shoot better rather than the bigger caliber. Thanks for all your replies, and I really appreciate you all reading this topic. Thanks again. -
What a great shot, and got to love the big smile on his face... Can't wait until next year so I can take my son. If you don't mind me asking what caliber is your son shooting?

Need Help with choosing .243 or 7mm-08 Remington/Savage or Ruger???
Stallone A. replied to Stallone A.'s topic in Youth Hunters
I just went to Cabelas with my daughter(2.5yrs old) today to compare brands. I have to say I tried out the Remington 700 and 770. I did not like the 770, it did not feel as smooth as the 700 IMO. I also looked at both Savages Axis and Axis II. The Axis II did have a better trigger however the Savage action was not as nice as the Remington 700 IMO. It was better than the 770 I have to say. Then I tried the Ruger American it was nice for the money but I think I would rather buy the Savage. So I did not stop there I had to try out 2 other models that I did not consider first the Browning, I did like the smoothness of the action but felt a little heavy. The last rifle I tried was the Tika T3 light and Ultra Light. All I have to say is WOW… The action and trigger on this gun is very nice. Both guns are light however the ultra light would be the perfect gun if it did not have a price tag of $799 on Sale. I think overall the best gun would be the Tika T3 light for $549. I know its probably $200 more than the Savage axis and Remington 770 and about $120 more than the Savage AxisII or Remington 700 but I think its worth the extra money. I have to take into consideration that this rifle will be passed down to all my kids and hopefully for generations to come. I believe in spending a little more now and probably in the long run it will pay for itself (lightness, action, trigger and we will see with accuracy). I am so happy to have had everybody write their opinions on brands and caliber's. Writing this has helped me choose the right rifle for my son's 10 B-day, I hope this can help another father trying to decide what rifle to choose for their child. I still have not chosen a caliber but hopefully by tonight we will have one all picked out. I will let you all know how it goes. Both boys are excited to try out the .243 and 7mm-08. (Thanks to Mr. H…) My daughter will have to wait a few years to shoot however today at Cabelas she got to look at all of them... -
Need Help with choosing .243 or 7mm-08 Remington/Savage or Ruger???
Stallone A. replied to Stallone A.'s topic in Youth Hunters
Thanks everybody for your comments and input. A buddy of mine just length me a Salvage model 99 in .243 to try and also a Browning in 7-08. Going to take him shooting tomorrow for his B-day after school. I will have him choose the caliber that he likes. I still have not chosen a Brand but when I do I will be sure to let you all know. I can't wait to see the look on his face once he gets to shoot a caliber bigger than the 22-250 that he is use to shooting. Thanks again everybody... -

Just wondering why you pick the Remington over the savage? All my guns are Remington however a lot of people are leaning me towards the savage axis II? -

Thanks for all the info everybody… Keep it coming, its great to heir everybody's feedback. I am still undecided on what to get him. So the more info the better. I love the smile on your son's face Kaibabhunter…. -
One of my son's shoots the Hoyt Ruckes Left Handed and the other shoots the Hoyt Ignite RH both are adjustable. They are also both very accurate and my boys love them. My nephews both have Mathews youth bows and they love them as well. I think any bow you get them they will love. Just make sure you buy them a good release. They started off using a big bulky release that I had and now that I bought them a tru-fire, now they have no complaints. Hope that helps. (Go see Daniell at the Archery Club tell them the Stallone's sent you in and they will take care of you.)

Here are the best Socks Patagonia Leightweight Merino Hiking Socks. I have used these in all types of weather and they have never failed me. They keep your feet dry and don't smell (the best part I have never had a blister while waring these socks). I will put on my list Darn Tough Socks as # 2, however I have to say Patagonia is #1 in my opinion… Hope this Helps.

I just want to share with you all about my experience with Spot Hogg customer service. I never met a better company than Spot Hogg. I have been using their products for years now but never had to call on an issue. I broke a pin on my 7 deadly pins last year and sent it back and not only did they fix my sight but made my sight look brand new again. I just bought the Hogg Father for my new bow. Being that it is an adjustable sight I was a little confused, so I called them up and they helped me with all my questions. Lastly, I lost a screw and they are sending one to me for free. Even though the screw may cost $1 or $2 they are shipping it to me at no cost. That says a lot about a company and their customer service. Thanks for reading, Anthony
