Some people just get lucky. I would rather get a spike that I hunted up than get a 100in that was pushed to me if I was road hunting.
-
We had people all over as well. Never seen that many before. You got to love the guys that show up about 0830, and start hiking all over the place. Our deer are on the ground by the time they were getting out of bed.

The first deer was shot at 492yrds, Fri morning at 0700. 3X3 with eye gaurds The second deer was shot at 726yrds, Sun morning at 0745. 3X2 with eye guards The rifle used was a 338 EDGE. Both 1 shot kills.

300 SMK at 2850fps. Have you looked at the 208Amax, 210 Berger, or the 220-240 SMK for your RUM. They will do better than a 180gr.

Thanks mason a. I think a 700-800yrds shot with the Edge is about the same as a 400-500yrds shot with my 7MMRM. The rifle is unreal. Its averaging .270 at 100yrds, and right around 1.95 at 500yrds. I had a guy on another fourm make a commet about how those longrange shot are bad beause the energy is so low. It made me laugh my butt off. 3616ftlbs at 492yrds, and 2948ftlbs at 726yrds will do it I think. It sure did this time. I wonder if his -06 would kill a deer if he put his muzzle up to the fur.

All guns are different. You just have to get out and see what your likes. Wih some work/tweaking it will work out great for you im sure.

Travis makes a great rifle. The Edge will make 1000yrds seem like a piece of cake. I did load del. at 500yrds then went straight to 1000yrds with mine. When you get pics lets see it. Cant wait.

Being new to longrange hunting, going from 450yrds to 1600yrds will require a lot of practice, work, and skill. Lets see the specs of the new rifle. My advice is to not shoot out side your limits. Know your limits at all times. The animals deserve more respect than just shooting at them. As far as rangefinders. Swar, Zeiss, Leica

With the heavy bullets, you will need to use a slow powder in order to get the speed before preasure. -

With cases that big, I would look at the 208 Amax, 210 berger or the 240 SMK. They will out perform the 168 in every way but speed. For info look at reloadersnest.com. Tons of good info. -
The Vais brakes work very well. How ever they have holes on the bottom that blow dust and rocks all over the place, including on the shooter. If you plan on shooting over loose dirt/rocks I would get a side ported brake. The side ported brakes are also more effective due to the larger surfaces for the gases to work with.

Van Horn Custom Rifle Barrels
jeffro replied to jwhunter's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I sent you a PM with some info on these barrels. -
Have you thought about putting a brake on the rifle. It would kick like a 243. Anybody have experience with this lighter weight bullet at range? What range. Light bullets and range dont work. The 155 sierra is about the lightest bullet you see people shooting at range(800+) with decent results.

Razor 12X50s are great.

I have a buddy wanting to buy a cheap semi-auto pistol. Somewhere around $300-$400. If you have something like this please send a PM. Thanks

1/2in or 1/2MOA @ 500yrds

Prone with a Harris, and a rear bag. Solid

These are suposed to be nice guns. Not really my style, but they shoot great.

Thanks 308nut. I didnt do any load del. My first load shot great. I was very happy with the results of the rifle, and at a $1 a shot I didnt want to shoot a bunch of groups at close range just to see what they would do there. I want to shoot 800+. Hornady will be coming out with a 285gr in 2011 I hear. I want to shoot the Berger, but have been waiting to see if they change it due to the issues they were having with the 300gr. I know the curent bullet would be fine at 2850fps, but I dont want to work a load, and then they change the bullet. The changes are in the works, and the new bullet will have a new BT design, and a longer bearing surface. I guess we will see what they come up with.

The first 3 shots out of the gun went into a .497in group at 200yrds. I just got done shooting some new loads at 500yrds, and they shot 2.75, and 2.90 with 93.0gr and 93.5gr of H-1000 and a 300SMK seated at 3.800. 93gr had an ES of 8fps, and an AVG Vel.of 2847fps. Not the best groups, but the mirage was very bad, and the wind was a bit gusty so Im sure it will do a lot better than this. A few good pics of the Rifle.

Trued REM700. Never heard of a Savage Edge rifle. What is that.
-
Great Bull. Nice story .thanks.

14.4lbs with the Bi-pod. Its a bit heavy, but it sure sits on target very well.
-
R&D Precision built the barreled action. I did the rest. The brake is the Muscle Brake from Jim See. The brake works great. It kicks, but not bad at all considering its pushing a 300gr at 2847fps. The full build specs are in my first post about the rifle.

We glassed this bull up on Trurs. night about 1.5 miles south of us. We watched him rut hard until the sun went down. In the morning we decided to go after him, and we were going to close the distance in the dark so they wouldnt see us. As we walked in we could hear them rutting hard right in front of us. It couldnt have been much more than 100yrds from us. They were just screaming like crazy. We could hear them walking. We decided we better get away from them so we went up on top of a hill to get a better view of the area. We glassed them up before sun came up. You could barley see them but you could see them good enough to tell it was the bull we wanted. I started to range them and the area, while steven was getting ready to take the shot. We got all set up and the bull stopped broad side. Range it. 682yrds., Dial it. 1 MOA windage to the right for about a 2-4mph from the right at 2 oclock. REM700 300WM 208 AMAX @ 2955fps. Elk went no more than 50yrds after the shot.
