You are probably talking about the mill-dot-master slide rule.
-
Thanks for the info. My buddy has the 6-20-50 viper, and for the money i dont think it can be beat.
-
What scope do you have. I was looking around at some Vortex.
-
Yep, Use 14X.
-
You have a SFP scope right? You will need to use 14X when milling then, or your mils will not be accurate for ranging. As you turn your power up or down the Mills will not equal what they are suposed to. Are you planing on Milling for hunting?
-
When you Mil you will need to be on the desinated power setting unless you are on a FFP scope. On variable power scopes, the correct power for the Mildots to be accurate will depend on whether it's a First Focal Plane (FFP) scope or a Second Focal Plane (SFP) scope. On FFP scopes the appearance of the reticle changes with the power adjustment (the reticles don't change size, they're just magnified along with the rest of the view), so it is always accurate regardless of which power setting you're on. On a SFP scope, the reticles appears to be the same size through all the power settings so the mildots only subtends the correct size on one power setting, usually the highest power setting on the scope. If your scope is SFP there will sometimes be a dot or driangle that will tell you what power to mil off. Im pretty sure the Vortex has a marking on it.

Anyone shooting/loading the 6.5 284?
jeffro replied to soazarcher's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
The bullets I would look at would be the 140 Amax, and the 140 Bergers. You can get the rifle throated for them. -
+1 some savages are not baD. i shoot against savages all the time with my REMINGTON 700. i enjoy it. Grin. Big grin here as well.

Anyone shooting/loading the 6.5 284?

Great round, but a bit to hard on the barrels for me. I would rather shoot other rounds that have better barrel life. If you dont care about barrel life its great. This is where I have got most of my info, I hope it helps. http://www.6mmbr.com/SixFive284.html -
Quote "If you’re looking to do long range shooting as a hobby or as sport then fixed turrets is not the way to go, there is too many variations that go into shooting those ranges. Elevation and Temp is just some of the basic changes that happen all the time. Fix turret are a great idea if your hunting the same place (elevations within 1000 FT) and the temp is somewhat the same (with in 15 degrees). " Big + 1 I tell people this all the time, and they just dont get it. They want easy. They dont understand balistics. There are way to many Var. I have seen people buy them for their hunting elevation, and come out to practice, and wonder why they are off. I run the Balistics, and they are right on with the Bal. Com. I think the biggest problem is that people want to just buy a piece of equipment and become longrange shooters/hunters. It takes lots of practice, dedication, and studying. You will never stop learning even after many years of shooting.

I would get a nice scope, and then a seperate nice rangefinder. There are many reasons, but one would be that you can use it with different hunting set-ups. More than one rifle. As for rangefinders I would look at Swarovski, Lieca, Zeiss. In that order for me, but they are all very nice.

I would go with a REM700. There are many great Cal. out there. You need to get the one that will fit your needs. Long range hunting is much more than just buying the set up. It takes a lot of time, studying, and practice. My best advice is to never shoot out side your comfort zone. Know your limits. Dont think Im against longe range hunting/shooting with this post, as I live and breath this stuff. I just dont like when I see people say "Im new to this stuff, and I want to shoot game way out there." -
My new rem 7mm mag not a shooter
jeffro replied to mason a's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Dont clean your barrel. Most barrel will shoot better when fouled. If you clean it, it will shoot differently for a while. All barrels are different though. I clean when the accuracy starts to be affected, or if the barrel gets rained on. If you barrel is a factory, I would start with a fairly clean barrel, as they dont go as far as most customs. As far as heat on your barrel. Dont let it get hot at all. Shoot a group, then let it cool all the way back down. If you cant touch the barrel it way to hot. -

I do my OCW test at 500-800yrds. Depending on the gun. Shooting at the same dot the whole time it is very clear as to where your rifle likes to be. They will all be clumping into one area. -
Oil and a rag will sometimes work if its not to deep. Let the oil sit on it for a bit them rub hard.

The farther out you can hold dead on the better the test will be. At distance you can also do an OCW test, and see where your rifle likes to be shot as far as the Vel. goes. I do most of my load Del. at 500yrds. It has always worked good for me. If you want a 1/2 MOA rifle, you will have to be able to shoot 1/2 MOA at what ever distance you choose. -
Is the rifle your loading for a TC Encore.

You may look into a stiff Laminate stock, they will have an ADL. You can get them where you finish them, and they are priced pretty good. -

Theres no way I would put $150 in a tuperware stock. I would look into getting a better stock. If you can do the work your self, I would go that route, and see if it helps. It wont cost much to do it your self. I have bedded a few tuperware stocks over the years, and they worked out great, until they were replaced with better stocks. -
.264 Winchester Mag loads?
jeffro replied to 40-year-AZ-hunter's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Bruinpoint A thin barrel will heat up fast. Slow down your shooting. Magnums will heat up. Its a matter of how much fire your throwning down the barrel. Did you break your barrel in. Some say barrel break in is BS, but it can help on factoy barrels do to the fact that they are very rough compared to customs. Try some JB bore paste. If you want to get more agresive you could try those tubbs final finish bullets. As for your 140grs, many high bc bullets are long, and have a better shape than the 100s. This will make them smaller out front, and thus allowing them to be seated out longer, and still not touching the lands. The ogive is much farther from the tip on a high bc bullet than on a 100gr. Im not sure what you want to use the gun for, but I wouldnt be shooting 100grs in a 264mag, unless I just wanted to blow up small critters within 200yrds. -
