    Az Unit 9 Elk

Red Rabbit I went scouting Saturday the last day of July but skipped this last weekend. About 70% of the tanks I saw had water that weekend. After the recent rains up there it could have filled more tanks. I'll send you an email.

    36 B december hunt

recurveman I guess your number in the draw was a much higher number than m1280. m1280's tag numbers must have been good low numbers in the draw but his first and second choice filled up very quickly but some tags were still left in his third choice 36B area so he got it. Recurveman as far as you not getting the tag, you probably had some higher numbers and 36B was already filled up, so it knocked you down to your second choice. Either that or the computers messed up.

    Nice Coues Deer buck

This would have to be unit 22, you have a archery elk tag for that unit. Or at least that's what I figured out.

    Nice Coues Deer buck

Why don't we just start guessing how this awesome buck might score after Arizona Griz tags him this season. My guess would be 118 P&Y. Good Luck this archery season.

    Nice Coues Deer buck

That is a big buck, ya got a tag for that unit?
  6. Since I rarely hunt unit 1, I'll tell you where I saw a monster bull last August and one other big bull. Also I've seen a lot of turkey up there every summer. coues14@aol.com

    Unit 32 Nov.

You might want to get a general bear tag also. I've seen some bears while glassing canyons in 32 during the Oct coues hunt. While your scouting glass for bears because the hunt ends Oct 21. I assume this is a coues tag and not muley so give me an email coues14@aol.com
  8. I've seen plenty of good size bulls in unit 1 south and east of Big Lake. Would really like to get over that way this summer to do some scouting and fishing but havn't had the chance. Has it rained much this year in unit 1 because here in Flagstaff it's a little low on the rain this year so far.
  9. Nice 5 by 5 bull. What State is the pic from and what deer cam you are using?

    brand new to hunting

If you want hunting gear call 1-800-237-4444 and get a cabela's magazine. I take it that you want to hunt archery northeast of Phoenix where the fire was.

    rem-.260

I don't have a .260 or know anything about them. What I consider the best rifle to cover all your options would be a 7mm. I consider the 7mm one of the best flat shooting high power rifles there is. It's good for coyotes with a 55 grain bullet or elk with a 160 grain bullet.

    Lion Experience

Had the same kind of experience in unit 7 West while hunting elk in November. Didn't have a gun on me at the time but got some real good looks at the eyes and black around the mouth with my binos at about 10 yards also. I looked at that lion for about two minuites before I decided to run right at him. It didn't take long for the lion to disappear. The only good lion is a dead lion.

    time for a new bow

I shoot the Mathews MQ1 set at 70lbs and 100 grain spitfires at 274 fps. I really like this bow but I had to buy a new cam for 30 inch draw. The max on the MQ1 is 29 inches. The 30 inch draw should put it up around 286 fps. Really any Mathews bow should shoot great but I feel the Mathews LX is the best right now.

    TAGS

Arizona Griz, I had my tags to when they called and I was wondering how they were going to get them from me. I guess they could of cancelled my tag number and name for that permit and let the game warden know for that unit. Good Luck Hunting

    HUNTER ORANGE

I only wear an orange vest when I go quail hunting and dove hunting, other than that don't feel I need to look like a pumpkin. Although you never know how many Californians might be hunting, they tend to shoot at themselves let alone you. During the rifle hunt it wouldn't be a bad idea for an orange hat, but archery hunting camo is just what should be worn. Have fun hunting, should be easy target practice with out of staters in orange.

    Tag in the mail?

Doug, I hope you have your tag now. With all the trouble I went through getting mine at least I got it yesterday. Good Luck Hunting

    How close???

My best stalk was to about 10 yards to a coues doe in unit 32. I glassed the deer up and made a sneak around a hill where the wind was right. I just kept myself between bushes and cedars and when the deer began to feed I made my move. I would say the deer was very surprised to look up and see me that close.
  18. Call 1-800-237-4444 and ask Cabelas for an archery 2004 magazine. Cabelas.com might have deer cams on it. I have the nontypical deer cam and it works great. It says it's effective range is up to 60 feet but I've had good pics a bit past that distance. That deer cam right now is $199.00 and I bought it for $279.00. Many other deer cams are in Cabelas magazine just pick what you like. I have never made my own deer cam but I'm sure some of the other members have and can tell you how to make your own.

I got my tag Monday (yesterday) and they swiped my card today. They were having trouble getting my card to go through and gave me a warning on my answer machine today that if I didn't give them a new card number then my dream hunt would be off to somebody else. I put in for elk and a few others in May with my card I've always used. The credit card company switch occurred at the end of May. Since I put in for turkey and a few others in early June with the new credit card numbers, I had a new card for those animals and my turkey tag went through but not my elk tag. Called once I found out they switched my credit card numbers in early June and let the Arizona Game and Fish know, and they said they'll just go to my next card from when I put in for the other animals in early June and everything would be fine. Well since I recieved my elk and turkey tag yesterday I figured everything was fixed from when I called them. I guess not after the call today. Finally I made them verify that it went through over the phone and they said it worked. I could tell they remembered I called in June about what the credit card company had done. I guess the Game and Fish had just forgot to go to the next card. Never had this happen before, but if any of you ever see your credit card company switch your numbers saying you will be recieving a new card and you already put in for some animals you better be ready to get it straightened out with the Arizona Game and Fish. I'm just satisfied all that is over with.

  22. Heres what I will send to Arizona Game and Fish. 1.) Every nonresident should take an Arizona Hunter Safety Course in Arizona and it has to be a three to four week course like I had to take, not no weekend deal. 2.) No guide out of the State of Arizona should be able to guide in the State of Arizona. Resident guides only. ******3.) No nonresident can apply for big game permits in the State of Arizona.******* 4.) Illegal to sale hides and antlers if thats whats going to end that court stuff. 5.) I don't like seeing the rich have all the fun but the nonresident tag fees will have to be raised dramatically to keep their numbers down. 6.) No nonresident can apply on the internet. The application has to be filled out and returned to an Arizona Game and Fish office in Arizona. 7.) I would like to see tag fees charged to your account for residents and nonresidents as soon as you apply, NOT as soon as you recieve your tag. 8.) Nonresident licenses should be tripled at the least. 9.) One nonresident elk tag per lifetime. One nonresident deer tag in the State of Arizona. No antelope, buffalo, or bighorn sheep tags to be given out to nonresidents. Residents in all States deserve the opportunity to hunt over a nonresident.
  23. What a great tag to have. My dad's brother has the same tag and he had only one bonus point this year for deer. I've never personally had a 12A west rifle tag but have been on plenty of archery and rifle hunting trips over the years. It will be fun to see how the November hunt really is exspecially after a 84% kill last season. I'll be up there helping and we just need to pray for SNOW. The deer used to hang out in the lower country even on the general October hunt but since the drought not nearly as many deer hang out down there. I figure the best scouting will be done right when the general season ends because the deer will be moving off the plateau at that time. Each day the deer densities in the cedars will begin to fill up before the November hunt. The reason It's not a 100% kill is because hunters are after one of those monsters that take to long to find or hunters spend to much time up in the pines at that time of year where few are to be found. If it does snow though which is hard to come by lately, look for tracks in the higher country crossing roads because sometimes the bigger bucks will be last to bail off the mountain and thats a great chance to trail down a big one. My email is coues14@aol.com if you want some great spots we've hunted in the past.
