Deer,Predators,and Drought
111 replied to Manamal's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Manamal The lion track has to be fairly fresh according to the guide. We found a huge lion track in the snow up on the north rim a few weeks ago but the guide said it was a day old so his dogs couldn't chase it. I'm guessing he wants the lion track a day or less old and he prefers the track in the snow. Any info is good, just let me know. We'll keep looking. -
Deer,Predators,and Drought

I think all of us will shoot a coyote given the opportunity, unless your in a good area chasing a monster buck or bull. I'm trying to do my part with the preditor problem but it's tough. I think the only way to make a big dent in the population is by trapping or aireal control. Manamal I have a guided lion hunt with a guide from Dewey, and anytime I find a fresh track or he does we're on it. Some reason he's been out looking for tracks and has only found one old one in the Kaibab. With this two foot snow storm in Flagstaff he should be calling. If any of you know find a fresh track I wouldn't mind knowing. Thanks -
04 tag, because he was shot in 04.

Congrats! He's a bruiser.

Happy birthday Josh. Keep updating us into January on all these nice photos of coues bucks, they're awesome.

That buck is amazing. What unit did you get him in?
-
Very nice buck. I'd mount that buck if I got him. Will you guys be using a rifle or bow?

Polaris 700.

Once many days have been put into trying to locate a wounded animal and you feel confident with your efforts, then continue hunting. Personally it would depend on how I feel about the hit, blood trail, and how many days are left of the hunt to determine how many days to search. If you happen to come upon it while hunting later then tag it. You chose to shoot the animal, so rack size shouldn't matter in how much effort you decide to put into the recovery of the animal. It shouldn't be a factor, but most hunters including me may stop their hunt for the remainder of the season in search of a trophy animal.

Congrats, Very nice buck John!! Finally a good sign of the rut!

Congrats Bryce!!!!!!

That sucks. Some people are just out of their mind. I would have been mad enough after not being able to find that monster buck you guys had scouted out. Then a slob hunter on a quad comes down the hill where your buck is, I'm glad that didn't happen to me, I would be in prison.lol Congrats on your harvest.

I went out to 20A and saw lots of muley doe. In the afternoon I went to unit 21 to glass that awesome country, and saw more doe. I don't think the ruts in full swing yet. Looks like unit 27 has a rut going on though. Good luck on your hunt.

I agree, why take the chance. 30-06 for sure.

That's a neat looking coues shed. Awesome pics of the same buck also!

Finally able to get on the website. Lets hear some hunting stories!

What an amazing buck!!!!!!! I really like that rough looking county your harvesting these nice animals in. Most coues hunters look at a December 22 coues tag kinda like a strip tag for muleys. You should be able to make an excuse for your boss before Dec 17th. Again nice buck and thanks for posting the pics.

Found this 152.5 inch bull antler in unit 7 in August while scouting for deer. With a 45 inch spread it would be 350. White on the inside but brown on the outside.

Another Utah Bookcliffs Bull

I've got to admit, I do have a habit of putting in for the tougher draws. I realize the tougher draw doesn't mean your going to harvest a great animal, but it seems to make scouting easier. My first choice always goes for a trophy quality hunt, and second choice is an average unit I know well and can scout often before the hunt. Scouting is 90% of the hunt, so I take advantage of every opportunity to learn new areas. It also makes your hunt that much more rewarding once you harvest an animal you've been watching for a weeks or even years. Much like you've done Chris. I also saw that thread on CB1's 13B tag. You seriously need to make some story up for your boss so you can go on that hunt.
