Archery elk hunt in 6B with my oldest brother who lives out of state. We are in camp eating lunch and my wife calls saying the baby is sick. We live in Globe and her doc is in Mesa. Now as hunters, brothers and fathers some of you can understand that while I needed to get home I also couldn"t just leave my brother by himself. So I decide to hunt the afternoon with him and then drive four hours home so that I can take my little one to the doc the next day. One of the best afternoons I have ever spent in the woods, up to my neck in elk. Ended up missing a cow at 40yrds. after being in the middle of the herd all afternoon. So I make the truck a few min. after dark, no brother. Fortyfive min. later he shows and says grab your flashlight. We were on bloodtrail till about 10:30. After finding where this cow had beaded and that she was still alive we backed out two miles the wrong way. Lost in the dark we finally hit a road we knew, we make Flagstaff at about 12:30am. I have another brother that lives in Flagstaff who was off the next day so he could help recover the elk. Grab a bite and lots of coffee and head for home. There was no moon, pitch black but yet there was game everywhere. By the time I made clintswells I was freakin out narrow misses with both elk and deer are scary. So about three in the morning I make it to Pine and I think thank-god at least threw this little town I get a break from all the elk in the road WRONG. These cows come right out of someones front yard, I locked up the brakes but it didn't matter. Ford ranger meet cow elk. She does a front flip over my hood and I think for sure I killed her, and my truck. So I call my wife, and highway patrol who says their eta is over an hour. I'm standing at the back of my truck talking to dispatch and I lookover and the dang elk is standing there 5 feet away just staring at me like so your A-hole huh. Then she turns runs threw another yard jumps a fence and vanishes. The only happy ending here is my little girl still made it to the doctor without me, back then my grandpa had a place in pine so i crashed got up the next morning smashed the hood down as far as I could and drove home. As for my brother he never did recover his elk. My wife and I had only been married for a year, she hasn't asked me to leave a hunt early since.

Here's the one that only came in when I wasn't in the blind last year.

The first buck in these pics is kinda strange. I hope he keeps coming in, not that he's big but his rack looks like it curves down. These pics where all taken from the same cam in the same place but the bears keep changing my camera angle for me.

One more of the bear

Great pics, I spend a lot of time in those mountains and your right to catch a turkey on cam is very rare. Thanks for sharing

Trail cams are best for reminding me that waiting these deer out is always the best practice. I hunted this spot for four days last august then I gave up on it. Wrong choice, it's a long ways in and I had other hunts coming up. So this camera had been in there since august 2010. I was lucky to recover it and got some great picks.

Looks like it to me thanks jmp.

Three days after putting up the cam yogi decided to reposition it. From the looks of the foot traffic I missed a lot. At least he didn't eat my cam.

It only has twenty days to do but if that new growth even begins it could be interesting. I will be sure to get back to you on that. How do you go about getting a fire map?
-
Maybe he will leave it alone this time, it was nice to meet you and your husband though Amanda. What did you think of the burn, I had no idea it went up that high.

What a season, I got burned out of this spot before the hunt started in august. Then I set up about half a mile away and didn't get much activity. This spot is right on the edge of the burn and since early September I have gotten nine different bucks on the cam. But as luck would have it none of them while I was in the ground blind. I'm going to take this moment to thank all of you for your great post. The information I have gained from this site continues to make me a better hunter and I know luck will smile on me sooner or later.

finally found a shooter, come on december.

This spot was spur of the moment and is full of game just not what counts.

Several hundred acres rencently burned in the pioneer pass area of 24a. Including one of my trail cams. So now Im wondering how far the deer that were in that area have moved. Did the fire just cause higher concentrations of game near by or are the deer likely to completely leave the area? Im going to take a chance and put another camera in that area on the edge of the burn if anyone is interested I'll let you know what I find.
-
Had the first one I ever put up stolen. The whole area looked like it had been shot up with an automatic weapon. That was the last time I put a camera within a mile of a road or forest service trail. Recently one of my cams burned in a forest fire so Im hoping for better luck in the future.

I always hear eastern whitetail hunters talking about how bucks in velvet move very little. Basically food to bed. Does anybody know if this is true of coues? From what I have seen coues deer are all about pressure once they feel it their gone.
