Mon, you have the tag of several lifetimes, I would suggest you do a little scouting and not let that tag be wasted. Try North of Rose Peak and along the west side of the Blue River in the wilderness area.

New way of hunting discovered!!!!

It would take an act of Congress, literally! -
Wildcat Canyon, the areas well away from the road, is always good, snow or not. Just start hiking early and take enough supplies to keep yourself out there all day. I had a client go in there last year and see six elk the first day. All 6x6 bulls.

It's against the law to bait bears!

I like the salt blocks that you get at the feed store. They also have minerals in them, not just 100% salt. You can get small ones that will fit in your pack for about $2.00 each. Here's another trick. Take a peanut butter jar and cut the bottom out of it. Unscrew the lid and nail it to a dead tree or wooden fence post. Then screw the jar onto the lid. The freaking deer go nuts over that Skippy Creamy! Just remember to take all your trash out with you please. I'm not trying to cause a riot.

Those articles are often written a year or more in advance of publication. If they are still pimping him this time next year though.... -

You're welcome You're welcome You're welcome BTW, that same company rents high end optics and tripods too for pretty reasonable prices. Swarovski, Leica, Zeiss, binocs and spotting scopes. -
The turkey herd ain't shrinking. The mild winters have been a boon to turkey numbers.

If you put it on a waterhole, you're asking for trouble. I've never had anyone bother mine when set on a deer trail or salt lick though. Just don't put them where there is a lot of hikers, bikers, and such and you will be alright. I would definatly hide it though, no matter where you hang it. If your just trying to pattern a buck or determine the local deer population and are not concerned with taking a picture that will be the October centerfold of Field and Stream, then get some tree stand steps, the strap on kind, and hang your cam about 9-12 feet up a tree, then take the steps out with you or hide them nearby. All your pics will be of the downward angle variety, but so what. You can still tell if it's a good buck.

I just bought a MiniDV cam and was wondering what everyone else using for video. I bought a Canon Optura. Maybe someday I'll spring for one of the high end cameras like the XL1- GL1 etc.

I took this picture with a 10X zoom digital camera. The distance was appx 500 yards. I then took this video of the same buck at the exact same distance, with the Canon Optura 20 w/Raynox 2x telephoto lens. Total of 32X zoom. Kaibab buck

Lion Stalking deer

Somewhere in the thread, it mentions the deer is a blacktail. So, I would figure Cali, Oregon, or Washington. -
There is plenty of public land in Unit 10 and all other units. Screw'em.

I filled it out and I did recommend the 90/10 commercial suggestion, although very reluctantly. I feel about 75% sure it will be thrown out, just like the what we had before. The judge already said we could not cap the draw, period. You can change the wording around all you want, but in the end it's still restricting non-residence with a cap. The only thing a court has ever approved in such cases is higher fees for NR's. Did a team of lawyers, skilled in interstate commerce law, think this scheme up or did a bunch of good ol boys scribble it out on a bar room napkin after a night of drowning their "not drawn for squat again" tears? Or worse, a group of "hunting club members" had a secret double handshake meeting in the basement and proclaimed themselves Rulers of the Tags.
-
Actually, I wasn't commenting yea or nay on the internet apps or charging up front fees. I was refering to the original post in this thread where the person claimed there were too many resident hunters and "serious" hunters should be given preferential treatment.
-
I have to say, that when people start trying to limit the number of people that hunt, that really burns me. How can you say there are too many people that want to hunt? You understand if our numbers go down, we'll loose it all? We should be encouraging EVERYONE to give hunting a try, not just the so-called "serious hunter". What about the guy that just wants to take his kid out hunting every now and then, not caring if he gets a trophy animal and not wanting to spend thousands of $$$ or spend many many hours scouting and such. Do not get an elistist attiutde. You are no more deserving of a tag than than the next guy.
-
I don't think the internet apps have a thing to do with this mess either. It's the fact that they accept credit cards. If ya can't afford the tag fees, for pete's sake don't go into hock for them! I like the way Utah does it. There, you can apply for either Elk, Deer, or Antelope, not all 3. You can also apply for 1 of the Once in a lifetime hunts. (moose, sheep or Mt Goat) The differance there is, they have enough game to give out over the counter rifle tags for elk and deer for those not successful in the draw.
