Why are dogs so fascinated with the odor of 'nads?
-
I would say that drinking water is not what is going to be hurting the wildlife as much as lack of food and cover for new borns. The coyotes will kill many more fawns and calfs this year with little or no ground cover.

This is the latest proposal for the 2006 hunt seas

It's pretty obvious they are going to go through with their money grab...errr I mean "increased opportunity" agenda. -
Question about which rifle to buy???
DesertBull replied to jordanhillis's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I have both a 30/06 and a 7 mag and the 06 kicks every bit as much as the 7mag. I also have a .270 WSM that kicks a little less than either, but it is only shooting a 150 grain bullet, as opposed to the 06 (180) and the 7 mag (175). Bullet weight makes a noticable difference in felt recoil. If you are shooting the 200 grain out of your .300, try dropping down to a 180 grain. Also, the limbsave recoil pads are great and consider a mercury recoil reducer that slips into the stock of the rifle, under the recoil pad. They work well, but add a little weight to your rifle. If you get a muzzle brake, get one that you can remove. Use it at the range and when practicing then take it off forhunting, unless you don't mind hunting with earplugs. -
I guess it depends on how close you are to people's houses. I myself wouldn't like someone hunting real close to my house, even with a bow. You don't know the intelligence of the hunter and if he would be able to pass a shot that might be dangerous to occupants of the house, especially if the buck/bull is HUGE. It's not worth the risk to me to have a family member or neighbor hurt. Ok, there is one neighbor I wouldn't mind getting thumped with a rubber blunt, but that is a story for another time!

You'll see crows and / or buzzards tomorrow. The meat is already a goner, so just face it and go back as soon as possible to try and salvage what you can. Also, if it were me, I would consider my deer tag filled for 2006, but that is your decision.

where were you?

uhhh.... yeah! That would put a damper on things for sure. Hope you are feeling better! -

If you going to "roll your own" you might as well get some cool cresting on your arrows too! Black carbon arrows with a florecent orange crest and white fletching makes an easy to find arrow and easy to follow in flight.

It happens every time, the year after El Nino. I was really hoping to have just an average rainfall winter to back up last years great fawn crop. I expect a lot of those young deer to die this summer unless we have a good early monsoon. There is very little for the deer to eat right now, how bad will it be when it is 105 every day?

Say goodbye to Dec. coues hunts.

Not only that, they want us to pay more to hunt shorter seasons. Where is the logic in that? -
Sweet! I missed a bobcat today. 40 yard bow shot and he jumped the string. Arrow went right under his stubby little tail!

Say goodbye to Dec. coues hunts.
DesertBull replied to Redbeard's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
If the G&F department are hearing complaints about not being drawn, it's most likely that the people that are complaining are the ones that only put in for the best hunts. Increasing the October hunts and decreasing the December hunts is not going to cut down on the complaints, it's going to increase them. 80% of the people that put a OCtober hunt as either first or second choice are already getting drawn. -
HAHAHA!!!! That's what I was thinking but I was wasn't about to say it!

The G&F give too many deer permits as it is now. Mule Deer tags - 2005 Unit 7 - 700 unit 8 - 500 unit 9 - 650 unit 10 - 700 Unit 33 - 700 -
Try around Queen Valley and across the hiway from the Arboretium (sp?) Also, in the rolling hills to west of the hiway between Globe and Roosevelt Lake Dam. The fringe areas around outside of Gold Canyon. There are a lot of food / water sources for them on the golf coarse and all the pretty flowers that people plant in their yards, but they often retreat back to the desert when people start moving around the community in the morning. When Aunt Bee comes outside in the morning and finds the pigs in her garden and all of her tulips and lillies uprooted, she drives them off with blood curdling screams and embarrassing profanity. Look in areas that have a lot of barrel cactus. The fruit is ripe and the deer and pigs are gorging on that stuff. It seems like that is the only green food they have right now. Plus it has a lot of moisture in it. If you have found any fresh sign at all, go back to it instead of hopping around the unit. If the sign is fresh, just keep hunting that area hard. Good Luck

Attention all hippies: I have some magical crystals for sale, CHEAP. If you rub them just right, you'll draw the tag of your choice next year. If you misuse them, for evil purposes, you will wake up the following morning with a craving for bean sprouts and tofu.

Does anyone know why they do not open these units in August/Sept? Every other unit in the area is open but not these two.
-
The water thing is what I was thinking too, but every desert unit has the same advantage.

If someone would write it and post it here and once we we all agree on the wording, I will prepare an electronic petition. One hint, don't make it a 3,000 word essay. State our position clearly and be respectful. -
Believe me, there are PLENTY of deer. Big'uns too.
-
They were closed before they started building out there. Plus, most of the unit is State Trust land. Even unit 19A, which every last square foot is being developed, is still open for archery deer and antelope hunting in August and September.
