AMEN! Why should I have to buy a hunting license until I know I will be able to hunt? Some will say, "yeah, but you can hunt doves, and quail, and rabbits, etc." I don't want to hunt that stuff, I want to hunt deer. If I get lucky and get a deer tag I will gladly buy a hunting license. If I want to archery deer hunting, I will buy a license and tag for that too, but it's called a HUNTING LICENSE, not a license to APPLY for a hunt.

last week

Me and Muskrat went out yesterday. Saw two bears, but nothing worthy of shooting. One small/medium (5') black bear and one medium (5-1/2') cinnimon phased. I am pretty sure they were both sows. Long legs and big Mickey Mouse ears. They were in the pears, but the pears were still green. The first bear I saw was going from pear to pear, tasting a fruit them moving on. I found a batch of pears that were starting to turn purple. I hope the season stays open antyoher week, I think they will be in there in the next few days. It was a good hunt. There was one camp along the road, but back in the Wilderness Area there was no one. Can't beat having 100,000 acres to yourself! Muskrat had to leave in the evening, but I backpacked in about 1-1/2 miles and stayed over night. Didn't get much sleep due the fact of there was bear sign EVERYWHEREand the heat sucked. Ran out of water and had to drink some nasty spring water. Not good. I really need to get a water filter. Those water treatment pills don't cut it when the water is green and there are little 8 legged swimmers in it. I agree with the above poster, please don't shoot the sows, lets's keep the season open for another week or so.

The mapping software does not show G&F water tanks. Only natural springs and cattle tanks. But for $40 you can get a book that shows where most all of the trick tanks are located. The maps in the book are crude though and some of the tanks can be hard to find as they do not give coordinates.

I just looked at the mount less than an hour ago and it is pretty bad. Looks like a giant deer head on a jack rabbits body. Looks like they used a doe's skin to make the full body mount and stuck the horns on it. I had another question about the mounts they have there. Some of those mule deer mounts have to be replicas right? Who is going let some one take there world record Mule deer mount?

Are all 20 tag holders going to be on the ranch at the same time?

I think that fees should be charged up front, but I do not think a person should be forced to buy a hunting license just so they can APPLY for a hunt. But, charging those fees upfront and issuing a refund check at the end cost the dept alot of time and money. I still think the best way improve draw odds is to limit the amount of hunts you can apply for. Pick one from each group. Sheep, Buff, or Antelope and make rifle Antelope a once is a lifetime hunt. Bull Elk, December Deer, North of the Colorado Deer (if you draw this, your app is removed and refunded from the last group) Cow elk, Oct/Nov deer So, that's 3 tags you apply for instead 4 every fall, big deal. One in a 10 thousand draws all 4 anyway.

At SW, I wish they would STOP asking me if I need help. It's annoying. If I need, help, I'll ask. I wasn't thrilled with their archery shop either. I went in to get new strings and cables and the guy helping me had no friggin clue what he was doing. They had my EXACT same bow hanging on the rack (Hoyt/Reflex) directly behind the guy, but he looked at my bow and said "I ain't never seen no cables like this b'fore."

What's wrong with entire families applying for hunts? Are you saying my 3 kids and myself should not be applying for hunts just so you can have a better chance of drawing a tag? I don't understand the arguments of people that don't get drawn. There are more people wanting to hunt than animals available. End of story, and it will not change. Yet, if you try to weed out the weekend hunter or the guy that just wants to take his kids and buddies deer hunting once a year like his dad and buddies did, then you are going to lose the sport all together. Every 4 years, when elections role around, all the so-called SERIOUS hunters are begging for support on wildlife issues, gun control issues, etc from ALL SPORTSMEN/Women, but when it comes time to send in your tag applications, they want to limit the amount of people that can even apply for hunt. Vote to save hunting! But please don't apply for a tag so I can get drawn! PETA loves that!
