Trail Cam Check 8/30/06
DesertBull replied to thedesertbuck's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
Is that the worlds largest Javelina or the worlds smallest water tank? Thos are some fantastic pics. -
It's not unusual to not see pigs this time of year. Very nocturnal until the heat breaks. Your best chance at spotting some right now is right at sunrise, as they head for cover or right before dark as they filter out of the brush. Also, the grass is very high right now and pigs can disappear in knee high grass very easily. When the grass dies out and the temps drop, you will see plenty of pigs in the 36 units. Good Luck!

If you are using the Leupold Dual Dovetail mounts, they have a front base and rear base for some models of rifles. One base is usually higher than the front one. Mix them up and you will have a problem similar to yours. If you are using the regular Leupold mounts, with the windage adjustment on the rear base, it's hard to mix those up. Try mounting a different scope, even if it's not a 50mm, see if you can get it on the paper. If you can, it's probably something wrong with the bases/rings. Also, if you don't get those Leupold rings lined up square or if you over tighten them, you can screw up the scope real bad. I tighten the rings down too tight on a Zeiss last year and screwed it up.

It's all about the money. If they lump us together they only have to pay overtime to field officers for one hunt instead of two.

I think I have an idea who this guy is, but you guys read this thread on Monster Muleys and tell me what you think? Anyway, it's pretty funny and if you play close attention to some of the things he says and his writting style, you might recognize him too. Hint: We used to have a guy that came on here every once in awhile and stirred things up. He was passionate about the Kaibab and Strip muleys. http://www.monstermuleys.info/dcforum/DCForumID6/12623.html http://www.monstermuleys.info/dcforum/DCFo...6/12726.html#14 http://www.monstermuleys.info/dcforum/DCFo...D5/8219.html#14

Be thankful for the "opportunity"!

For those of you that use both a spotter and binocs on your tripod, do you carry a tripod for each or just swap them when needed? It sucks swapping your scope / binocs, but it also sucks carrying two 'pods. Just curious as to what others do.

What do you think?

That's funny, it was actually the BHD guy's comment about "a cigar and a glass of bourbon" that made me think of CHD. -

I have a Bogen 3001 tripod and fluid head with two quick disconnect plates. This tripod is rock steady in the wind. I have packed it around the mountains of AZ for 3 years. When I first got it, I modified it be taking the whole thing apart and cutting 2 inches off of each leg section. It lightend up by 1/2 pound and shrunk the folded length down by about 3". Fits nicely in my pack now and is lighter. The head is a bogen also. It is a 3 way pan and tilt fluid video head. I paid $175 for the whole set up. I'll take $80 for it now. I can ship it for an extra $10 or we can arrange pick up. I lve in Gilbert/Queen Creek.

ARRRGHHH! 22S and 24B now closed too. Going to be a crappy weekend!

I can only go by what others have told me and that is that the Sequoia line of scopes is not up to the normal quality of the Leupold products. I have been reseaching scopes too, in that price range, and have concluded that the Nikon Fieldscope is the superior scope.

Does anyone think they will still be in the pears / junipers when the season re-opens on October 6th? There are not many pears where I have been seeing bears, but the ones that are there are still green/light red. They should be juicy ripe in another few weeks. Have not seen many juniper berries at all, but some of the scrub oaks do have have acorns.

Do you have a tag?
-
Dave, I have the same problem you do. Sometimes I get so frustrated I just want to seel the bow and stick to the rifle/muzzleloader. What release did you buy?

I have been kicking myself for not looking lower for some bears. Looks like they are down in the mequites! -
Any successful bear hunters this weekend?
-
Yep, but this was a bigger bear than the black one we saw last week. Not a belly dragger, but bigger. Ya know what's funny? There is a two track road that goes right to the top of that first hill we glassed from. LOL! We didn't need to bust brush for 30 minutes. That camp we saw was parked right on the trail.

Well, another day of bear hunting, but no bears. Saw one. That makes 3 bears spotted in 2.5 days of hunting. I glassed a bear this from this vantage point. If you look to the right hand side of this picture, where the last ridge coming off the mountain swoops down. That is where the bear was. The problem was, the last canyon between me and the bear has 100 foot cliffs straight down to the bottom. There was no way to get to him. This is the type of country I have been seeing bears in. There are a lot of prickly pear here, but very few if any have fruit and the ones that do are not ripe yet. I am hoping that the season will stay open one more week. If not, there is another season starting on October 6th. Think they will still be in the low country in October?

For spotting scopes, what does everyone prefer, straight or angled? I've never used a spotter before, but am thinking of getting one.
