Saw 40+ Muley does in unit 36A, only one buck, but he was a good one.

I have no problem with a person wanting to hire a guide. Especially an out of state hunter that has drawn a good tag that he may never draw again. Gas is too expensive now to be making multiple cross country trips to scout. Same for sheep hunters. That is a once in a life time tag and hiring a person who knows where the sheep are and how to judge them is probably a wise investment.

Trophy Deer and Elk...$16,000 !!!!
DesertBull replied to JVS's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in New Mexico
It was because of the plea bargain. The two morons decided to plead guilty, saving the state a lot of money in trial expenses. -
Prayers sent. Get well soon.

When are they going to start accepting apps?

I think the demand for cow tags will go down somewhat once the new prices take effect. $100+ for a cow tag is a little hard for some folks to swallow. I think some hunters will drop out altogether and others will switch to rifle/ML'er hunts where success is higher and you have a better chance of filling the freezer. Also, I think if you only apply for archery bull tags, you will be rewarded with less hunters in the field if you draw since the cow and bull archery hunts are concurrent. IMO, there are more than 17,000 elk in the state. You can drive down just about any road in unit 6A in the evening and see several hundred there alone. The G&F is probably correct with number, but it just seems low.

California Pig Hunt
DesertBull replied to DesertBull's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
They taste very good. The first one I got, back in May, was a little tough, but the flavor was excellent. This one is a little smaller and younger than the first, so hopefully it will be even better. Pig from last May - -
Short and sweet version of a wild hog hunt in California at the Tejon Ranch. We started out bowhunting, but conditions were rough. Wind, rain, and full moon had pigs hiding. Friday - While my friend Brent is stalking the first 3 pigs we see, my other friend Nate and I find a herd across a wide canyon. Brent'ss pigs were mixed in with cattle and harassing the little calves. The cows left and took the pigs with them. The herd across the canyon left too. That is all we saw on Friday. Wind was stoopid. Went back to camp, ate too much, drank a few coldies. Went to sleep. Sat - mid morning we saw a group of 8 or so big'ins but they were moving out to find a bed. Never saw them again after they hit the thick brush. Drove around to some other areas, nothing. Went to the lake to hunt some thick stuff that we heard could produce for bowhunters, but some other guys beat us there. Got a tip on another area and high tailed it over there. Wind still stoopid and cold. Brent did a mating dance for a group of deer. They were slightly amused. Just when we are getting ready to leave, Nate takes one more look across the canyon and there they were. 20 pigs and piglets of varying size just materialize out of no where. After side hilling for 1/2 mile or so, we get in range. I pick one and shoot at 270 yards as they are moving in a straight line from left to right, first shot miss, second shot hit, pig stumbles and starts heading for the bottom. Shoot again, miss. Nate and I go to the bottom, find the pig and dispatch her. OT brings the truck, grabs the rifle and heads off to find one for himself. Go back to camp, eat too much, drink some coldies. Stand in the rain around the camp fire like idiots listening to Hank Jr, Waylon and Willie. Go to bed. Sunday - Roads are wet. Roads are very dangerous in the canyons when wet. We go where we can but never see a pig. Go back to camp, pack up and leave. Loooooong drive home.

Soft heart? Must of been a Cardinal fan.

I have no idea what that is, but I would not have touched it. Drag it out to the road and call G&F to come get it. That is sick!

Anywhere you are seeing a lot of deer, there will be lions around.
-
Let's not forget, Bobcats can and do eat deer also, not just lions and yotes.

Would you drive a jeep?

I have a hard time with the comparisons of quads and planes. Quads are limited, legally, to established trails and roads. Yes, people break the rules, I know. Planes have no limitations, in fact they can go into wilderness areas where no vehicles are allowed at all, as long as they do not land. To each his own, but for me the thrill of the hunt is in the chase, not the kill.

1. they need to make that mandatory. 2. they need to make it so you can either call it in or do it online. More people would do it.

OLD DUDES ROCK! Awesome buck.

Perhaps I worded my last repsonse wrong. I am not for raising the min wage. I was trying to say that min wage jobs were never meant to be a career type of employment. They are entry level jobs with expectation of you improving your value to your employer with more experience. Sorry for the confusion. I am not a liberal, I promise.

That's still a nice buck. Congrats. One time I was hunting antelope and the area I was hunting was not a place that had a lot of goats. Well, I finally found a herd at the very end of the first day, watched them bed down right at dark, and snuck out so I could come back in the morning. There were two bucks in the herd, a nice 14"er and a really nice 16" or so buck. Next morning they were right where I had left them. I got in front of them and waited. The herd kind of spread out and I saw the bigger buck walk behind a juniper about 300 yards in front of me. I got on the shooting sticks and waited for him to walk out from behind the tree. A buck walked out, I shot, he died. As I was walking over to him, I see a big buck hauling butt across the praire. I'm thinking, ok, that smaller buck was bigger than I thought. Wrong. The small buck been behind the same tree I saw the big walk behind. The small buck came out first and sacrificed himself!

Minimum wage type jobs were for kids looking for spending money and a way to get some real world work experience when I was young, not for families of 8 (with the 9th on the way) living in a 2 bedroom apartment.

I was lucky enough to draw an archery bear tag in unit 22, after many years of applying. Have any of you ever been successful on a spring hunt in AZ ( not including the res)? I know the odds are long, but what are tactics that might produce? I love glassing and spot and stalk type hunting, but I am thinking a stand near water or a food source might be better in the spring? I would think a big ol' boar would be mighty thirsty after a couple of months in the winter den. I also know that not all bears in AZ hibernate. Any thoughts?

What happened with SFW AZ? Have not heard anything from them in awhile now. I think that group was going to speciffically deal with the politics of sportmen's issues.

The fact is, that this post has evolved from a discussion about Mr Ulmer into a debate about chute planes. People use chute planes, that's a fact. A certain percentage of the hunting public thinks that is wrong, another fact. Truthfully, I don't see anyone running down Mr Ulmer. If a person is going to use controverial methods, they have to prepared to accept a certain level of criticism from those that are opposed.
