What are you gunna get this year?
deserthntr replied to deserthntr's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
post a pic of the rifle! i love those interrupted fluted barrels -
they should fit on most 8 lugs back to atleast early 90's... but depending on what hubs are there will depend if it fits. but shouldnt be a problem. if the hub its gunna go on is a little smaller its not big deal. and if you dont feel safe with that you can always buy hub rings to fit the difference. drop by discount tire and they can do a test fit for free as well

i would definately go angle compensator because it can be a great dual purpose for archery as well. and i love the compesator for when shooting long range. thinking about selling my rangefinder and grabbing the new vortex. i really like the looks of it so far

deserthntr replied to AZbowhntr's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
i dont have a tikka but i do have a EGW 20 moa rail and use the burris xtreme tactical rings in low and have no problem with clearance on ym vortex. its a 50 mil, but could be because i have a different rifle -

Its a good thing these dentists didn't show up at my school before I graduated. I have a special needs friend I grew up with that I am very close to and have been in trouble at school for beating the crap out if kids who made fun of him. This pisses me off

unless you are shooting the matrix bullets out of your 270, which are on the heavy end to get a good BC, shoot the 7-08. it has way better BCs and thats what is important in long range shooting. to be honest i would rebarrel to a different caliber if you are going to get serious into it. what caliber would be what sounds good to you. but there are some good calibers you could just do a barrel swap and be able to use the same bolt face, etc.

i have the viper as well and have zero problems with tracking, its been flawless and have hit everything i have shot at out to 1000, minus the squirrel i shot at, at 1010yds, but i was about 2 inches to the side. blew rock chunks in his face

Basic training for a hunting/bird dog
deserthntr replied to makaio333's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
The best thing you can do is get him on as many birds as possible. i run GSP's but if you get them on birds they will basically train themselves. get a great bond with him and work on commands such as come, heel, and whoa, and you wont have to worry about ever losing him. even if you just get the pup on pigeons, they work great for training and are cheap -
i cant wait! wont have room in the truck for my little sis this week, and my dad doesnt want to squeeze. So she is going next weekend on my dads hunt. but im taking my buddy out. i turn 18 next saturday and since i will turn 18 during the jr hunt i am not allow to hunt this first weekend even tho ill still be 17. oh well i guess, gunna call one in for my buddy!

If I were to buy a new rifle it would be the LRH as well... I shoot a vortex viper.and it is an awesome scope. Make sure if you are trying to get into long range hunting you factor in reloading. It will be cheaper in the end anyways, plus you get way better accuracy and consistency. The Savage is the way to go IMO because it has the accu-trigger and accu-stock. If you plan on getting some gunsmithing done rem 700's have way more options. Its a Chevy vs ford kinda thing. I know people that have great success with both

Chevy Pick-up - Mesa Fillibertos - Signal Butte

Could have been me... was it a white s10? -
well after pulling the only elk tag in my house hold, a 22 north late hunt, i am pumped to get going... i have a long range rig and know it doesnt contain enough energy to humanely kill and elk at 1000, but i would like to shoot out to 1000 yds to make 700yds or under more comfortable. i can consistently hit balloons out to 600 yds, but a balloon is alot different than your heart pumping a million miles an hour. does anyone know where i can shoot out to 1000yds on the east side of town, either off the beeline or in that general area? im in mesa... btw i have my 6.5x284 shooting 1/4 MOA, so i know the rifle is capable just depends on me
-
alright, i have no problem going that direction, the only problem i see there is with how flat it is, will i be able to get a line of sight at that distance?

i didnt want to hijack andy's thread so i started a new one. i now understand that because of a denser bullet you cant use another bullets reload info, but i dont understand how the denser bullet causes more pressure. does it contact more of the barrel causing more resistance and therefore more pressure? or does the bullet not "give" as much and so it resists the explosion more as opposed to indenting in a little and causeing less pressure? thanks

Denser bullet=more pressure?
deserthntr replied to deserthntr's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
