GREAT day for mearns
deserthntr replied to IHunt2live's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
i think it would be fun to do a CW mearns trip with all our dogs, but unfortunatley i dont think i would be able to do one this year because of pig season, unless it was the last weekend, or i got my pig early, what do you all think? -

will the friday start at 9 also? -
my dad once caught a piglet and heard it squealing the heard ran back in, he learned to make the noise with his mouth, he hasnt had to shoot a pig at over 5 yards in the last 15 years, my shot on my pig this past season was like 3 feet, i have called them in sucking on the side of my hand like i am holding a varmit call and opening and closing it with like you do a varmit call

Who would want to eat a javi?
deserthntr replied to joeeden's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
i had a friend from school bring some today that was excellent, we always make them into jerky cause my dad isnt a fan of roast but he corck potted it in beef broth and then put a can of green chiles on it, it was great, but we skin it with 1 knife and cut it up with another, we just bone them out cause they are small enough to do in the field, but we skin down the back and go the gutless method with them, like amanda said the gland comes off with the skin, and you wont touch another if they have another i dont know about, but ya skin with 1 knife then bone out with another and they are excellent -
no no you all got it wrong WESTWOOD! haha thats where i go now

i am trying to decide shat i want, whether the spott hogg wrap 7 pin or the g5 optics XR, i like the floating pin of the XR but if something is past 40 so you adjust to the distance and then you cant get a shot till the animals moves farther you have to let down and readjust so then you have a chance of spooking it, so i am leaning towards the spott hogg but what do you all think?

i found a small 3x3 head when we were hiking but thats it for antler besides the buck my friend missed. but its old and kinda chalky. a decent 3x tho

well thanks to all who gave me info on where to go, unfortunately the people we took had a spot they wanted to hunt so i didnt get to check out the areas i was told had good populations, but i dont think i am ever gunna hunt this unit again, we went off the ruby road and down to the 39a road, first morning we glassed up to doe's as soon as it was light enough to glass well and they were already bedded, so i started looking in the thick stuff under trees and never saw another thing, so the me and my buddy moved and my dad and his dad went to another spot, well after about 30 min i glass up a buck about a mile away, so we hustle back to camp and cant find our dads, so we are debating whether to take my dads truck cause i am allowed to drive when i am with him but not alone, so we finally decide against it and as we are walking we find them and they go grab the truck and we jump in and take off, we get to the spot i decided we would start the stalk and unfortunately my friend doesnt know how to walk quiet and his dad had a cold so was coughing every 200 yards, well we get to where the buck was bedded and we were gunna try and get a shot from. we cant find the buck and figure maybe he has his head down and is gunna try to let us walk right by him. soon a doe busts out and we never find the buck and try to drive through and bust him. he is gone and we get on a point and start glassing again, my friends dad goes a little farther and bust a 90 inch coues out. we get him stopped and my friend misses no blood or hair found. we go back and i glass for another 4 hours till dark and dont find anything. nothing is moving until its dark and is bedded by early light, so its tough, as many of you know. the next morning i glass up a doe and fawn and thats it. we got a half mile from the nearest road and still nothing. on the way back i jump a fawn i thought was a jackrabbit it was so small, still had spots and everything. then we hear a shot from a road hunter and are watching to see if we can see anything running. as we are glassing a group of 7 does and fawns busts from behind and not a single spike in them. so we head home with only 1 buck seen. this was my first hunt down south and was tough, all my other coues hunts were alot easier that ive been on but they have all been in 22 and 23 and my dad has hunted them his whole life so we know where they are so its been easier. but i must not have glassed the right spots, there wasnt too mcuh ocotillo but i was glassing the thick oaks so i thought i would see more deer. got any suggestions what i could do next time i go down south if i do? should i glass them to be bedded in the open? i guess i dont know how to hunt coues as i thought lol. but i plan on getting better at those deer down south.

ya check and make sure your vanes arnt hitting your cables, try shooting it throught paper, if it doesnt make a bullet hole it is not tuned, or if you can shoot out to 20 yards have someone watch behind you and move your rest until the arrow flys straigh at 20 yards, then draw a circle at the top of your target and a straight line down the middle of the target from your dot at the top, walk to 30 yards and use your 20 yard pin on that top dot, your arrows will hit on one side or the other, move your arrow rest toward the line, so if all your arrows hit left move your rest to the right towards the line, same for if they hit on the right side of the line, move your rest to the left towards the line, do this until all your arrows hit on the line or are touching it, i cranked up my bow and had to some work to get the gold tips to fly again, check to see if cables are touching your little slots they go into cause if they touch the edge of it and slide in that will throw your arrows off, or make sure your cams are lined up, there are alot of options and things to do, if your live in mesa close to bass pro bring it on a monday or tuesday and i can get it shooting for you. i went in and had a guy teach me all the technical stuff so i or a guy there can help you out.

thanks guys, i guess it does sound like let me use your stuff and then i will see if i buy it, but i didnt mean in that way, just wanted to try something b4 i buy since like they said i am only 15 i dont want to drop 300-600 dollars and then not like them,
