  1. Here is a video of a bull elk that was just killed on the early rifle elk hunt. What do you guess he scores? View the full article
  2. Expert? Not exactly just a guy who likes to guess how big and chase em like everyone else. I thought he was about a 345-350 bull. I thought he could be 370 type bull if his left match his right. I hear he went 368 as is and 412 if he matched up. I guess the right beam is 61 inches. Definitely a fooler for me. Congrats to the hunter who harvested him. He sure had a "dog nut" looking thing on his left side. Clubber is gonna be hanging on someones wall now.
  3. Below is a two part series on "How to Cape a Bull Elk". My friend Daniel Franco was about to cape this bull so I figured I would do a little video. For those of you that don't know how to cape an animal this should help you. View the full article
  4. I had a great time elk hunting this weekend in Arizona Unit 3C with my friends, Daniel Franco and Mike Hancock, of Burnt Timber Outfitters. They had been watching two 7X7 bulls in particular that they wanted their early rifle hunters to get. They were able to isolate those bulls and hunt them exclusively. I had the honor of capturing everything on video for Cabelas Out West. Both of the "hitlist" bulls were harvested and should score in the 365-370 range. I am sure they will be posting pictures on there website soon of both hunts. As always, the Burnt Timber crew showed once again that they can get it done! The Burnt Timber boys even have their own meat locker which makes it extremely nice for their clients. It never ceases to amaze me how well they know the unit. The Cabelas Out West video of the 3C early rifle hunt will be posted here on this site on Oct. 11th of both hunts. Darr's hunter from Unit 9 will be featured this week on Thursday October 4th. This weekend was great hunting and fellowship time with two of my favorite professionals in the business! View the full article

  13. I just got off of the phone with Casey and we were going over the numbers of his giant Arizona archery bull elk. Here are the measurements: Left-19.2, 20.3, 20.4, 21.6, 16, 53.1, 8.6, 8.4, 8.4, 6.1=182 7/8 and the Right- 20.5, 18.1, 21.4, 22.3, 15.5, 55.2, 8.6, 8.1, 8, 6.3=184 6/8 and the inside spread of 43 5/8 for a whopping total of 411 2/8 gross typical frame. Then add the abnormals Left-18.7, 1, 3=22 7/8 and Right-11 5/8, 1=12 5/8 for a total of 35 4/8 inches of abnormals. So the total gross score is 446 6/8. If you deduct the symmetry of 8 7/8 of deductions the bull should Net score somewhere in the 437 7/8 neighborhood. This would easily place this bull as the NEW #2 in Pope and Young. Congrats to Casey. The following photos are exclusive photos from Casey for JayScottOutdoors.com. Casey's three biggest archery bulls are 446, 440, and 439. WOW! Congrats again!Typical mainframe net-402 3/8Non Typical Gross 446 6/8Non Typical Net 437 7/8 View the full article
  14. The first four days of the hunt are in the hopper with no bulls hitting the ground yet for Colburn and Scott Outfitters. The rut seems to be getting more and more intense each day. The forecast looks likes much of the same steady weather. Temps are in the high 30's at night and high 70;s during the day. My cousin Jimmy helped a great hunter named Matt who is 13 years old harvest his first bull elk. More pics and video to come soon. Looking forward to another 10 days of great Arizona elk action. 16. Opening morning has come and gone with much anticipation. We had some Arizona bulls bugling pretty decent this morning. Got on a few bulls but nothing special yet. Looking forward to spending another two weeks doing what we love! Weather is supposed to stabilize and no rain in forecast for 10 days. With things drying out the elk should get back to thinking about water. View the full article
  17. We got a bunch of rain yesterday and last night here in Unit 9. The 10 day forecast is for it to dry out with highs in the mid 70's and lows in the high 30's. Should be great weather for the first week of the Arizona archery elk hunt. Scouting continues to go well with lots of bull sightings in the 300-350 range. Bugling has been steady but not crazy yet which is good with me. I think they are going to come uncorked pretty soon. Hunters are starting to show up steadily. Hoping all elk hunters have good fortune this season! Pictures below are of two different young bulls. Good to see the next generation getting in on the action. View the full article
  18. As I write this post it can't be over 60 degrees with on and off light drizzle of rain. The weather appears to be setting up perfect for this hunt. We have been continuing to have great days in the field scouting for the archery elk hunt. We even were able to help friend Alex Rimsza harvest his first antelope. The elk rut seems to just be steady with not too much craziness yet. I keep hoping they won't go nuts until the season starts. Lets hope that points stay together through the season. I expect the bugling will increase daily. I haven't seen any actual breeding yet. I expect to see it within the next week and on into the month of September. Once again our God does not disappoint with his awesome sunrises and sunsets over Unit 9. Enjoy the pics! View the full article
  19. Darr and I have been using big optics for years. We first started using Doctor Optik 40X binoculars for long range glassing. When the Outdoorsmans in Phoenix, announced the arrival of the 32X Kowa Highlanders, we bought a pair and have been trading time between the two on our hunts. Over the years of using both the Kowa and the Doctor binoculars, we have come to the conclusion that the Kowas are a step above the Doctors. The edge to edge clarity is the factor that pushed us over the top. The Kowas definitely make us better at finding game. We have found many trophy animals over the last couple seasons with the Kowas. With some great trophy hunts on the horizon in 2012 for Colburn and Scott Outfitters, Darr and I felt adding an additional pair to our arsenal would be advantageous. Now we will both have "Kowa Vision". I have to admit that my main concern when I first saw the Kowa Highlanders was the angled eye piece. Once I used them consistently for about a week I got used to the angle and now it seems second nature. The Outdoorsmans also sells a small lightweight stool that is essential when using the Kowas due to the angled eyepiece. The stool is very comfortable and makes glassing for extended periods of time enjoyable. There are three eyepieces for the Kowa binoculars, 21X, 32X (which comes standard) and 50X. I think each eyepiece could have its benefits in certain applications but we think the 32X is perfect for everyday glassing no matter what kind of trophy you are after. I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of the 21X and 50X eyepeices to test out. We appreciate the guys at the Outdoorsmans for constantly raising the bar and continuing to carry the most cutting edge hunting gear on the market! View the full article
  20. The clarity is unreal. I recommend going down and look thru them at the Outdoorsmans
  21. Well, my friend Casey called this morning and told me about his 59th bull with a bow and arrow. This bull scores a whoping 446 4/8 inches gross green. Casey has firmly cemented his position as the most successful trophy elk hunter in the world. No one has killed more big 400 inch bulls than him. More pics to come soon! View the full article
  22. Our good friends, Danny and Steve Bright struck Arizona gold this season with a 90+ inch Antelope in Arizona Unit 9. Danny and Steve have been good friends with Darr and I for over 15 years. These two brothers are salt of the earth and two of the nicest guys you will ever meet. Going off of a tip from friend Jay Elmer, the Bright brothers were able to capitalize on this great Arizona antelope tag. Steve made a great 300 yard shot with his faithful brother by his side. The Bright's were assisted by friends and family, Kenny Bright and Steve Ash. More pics to come soon! View the full article
  23. It has not rained today which is a first in 8 days since we have been here. The forecast for the next 10 days calls for 20-40% chance of rain. The archery hunt starts a week from tomorrow. Bulls seem to be getting more engaged each day with more and more bugling activity. It is hard to beat Arizona elk hunting for sure. Excitement for the upcoming season is increasing each day. The thought of a 14 day archery season with a good moon makes me smile. Darr and I are in Unit 9 and Janis is scouting in Unit 10. I would say the antler growth is maybe just below average for unit 9. Seems like the backs are a little weaker than usual. Still should be a great season trying to find a big bull! 24. The elk rut is steadily improving here in Unit 9. The small bulls are getting their turn at pushing the cows and most of the bigger bulls are by themselves. Janis, Darr and I have been having lots of fun and enjoying one of God's greatest creations. Should be another good scouting morning. View the full article
