Steven Rinella-Meateater on Gould's Turkey
Jay Scott posted a topic in Jay Scott Outdoors/Colburn and Scott Outfitters
This Gould's turkey footage was shot with us while hunting Gould's last year with Steven and the Meateater crew. Colburn and Scott Outfitters is now booking for the 2013 Spring Gould's turkey season. We have had 100% success on all of our Gould's hunts so far. See what Steven Rinella had to say about hunting with us," Jay Scott and Darr Colburn will give you the best turkey hunting experience you've ever had. They knew the area well and had a lot of gobblers lined up. We hunted two mornings and called in many birds. One day I passed on two mature gobblers that were strutting ten yards away just because I was having so much fun. Shot the third to come in. The other morning was similar; could have killed multiple turkeys and shot a mature tom that was gobbling and strutting his tail off within yards. (We filmed the hunts, so I have irrefutable proof.) The border crossing was no issue. Ditto with the firearms importation process. The people knew Jay and it was simple. Any uncertainty I felt about that part of the process was quickly alleviated. Accommodations were quite perfect. Clean, well-furnished, hospitable. The workers at the ranch were happy to have us and they showed it. Food was great, with nice regional color. Really, it's a magical place and a magical hunt. In my occupation I've seen it all, and these guys are the best of the best. Smart, curious, humble, worldly, and deeply inspired by the hunt. Gear Review Vortex Razor HD Binoculars
Jay Scott posted a topic in Jay Scott Outdoors/Colburn and Scott Outfitters
By Darr Colburn The new Vortex Razor HD line of binoculars has really caught my eye since they first came out. I have been most impressed with the edge to edge clarity of the Razor HDs. In my opinion they stack up against many of the binoculars that are twice the money. I have not seen any other binoculars that compare to the Razors in the $800 to $1200 price range. The light weight and ergonomic design make the Razors easy to hand hold. The Razors are also easily mounted on a tripod with an Outdoorsmans stud and bino adapter. I don’t understand why some optics manufactures refuse to make their binoculars easily tripod mountable. The Outdoorsmans sells the 10x42 Razor HD for $1199. Key Features Include: • Premium HD extra low dispersion glass • XR fully multi coated lenses for increased light transmission and maximum brightness • Argon gas purged for superior waterproof and fog proof performance The Razor HD stands up nicely against my older pair of Swarovski 10x42 ELs. The Ocular lens on the Razor HD is 25% larger than the Swarovski. The Vortex Razor HD binoculars are available in four models 8x42 10x42 10x50 12x50 Like all Vortex optics the Razors are backed by a no fault lifetime warranty. Here is the warranty right from the Vortex website: Our warranty is about you, not us. It's about taking care of you after the sale. The VIP stands for a Very Important Promise to you, our customers. We will repair or replace your Vortex product in the event it becomes damaged or defective—at no charge to you. It doesn't matter how it happened, whose fault it was, or where you purchased it. You can count on the VIP Warranty for all riflescopes, red dots, rangefinders, binoculars, spotting scopes and monoculars. • Unlimited Lifetime Warranty • Fully transferable • No warranty card to fill out • No receipt needed to hang on to If you ever have a problem, no matter the cause, we promise to take care of you. Ernie Meeske's AZ Desert Sheep Official Boone and Crockett Score
Jay Scott posted a topic in Jay Scott Outdoors/Colburn and Scott Outfitters
Ernie's ram was officially scored at 186 1/8 NET Boone and Crockett. That final score makes it the largest ram harvested in the State of Arizona for 2012. This ram should be in the top 15 rams ever harvested in the state of Arizona. Once again a huge congratulations to the father-son team of Ernie and Seth Meeske. It was an honor and privilege to share the memories of the hunt with you. The dedication and commitment to the hunt and each other will never be forgotten. I've gotten a few inquiries lately on how I clean my rifle so I thought I would share my procedure here. By no means am I an expert on this subject but I have been lucky to have had good mentors. I don't do anything super special or tricky, just follow the directions on the bottles and do everything thoroughly. I also believe it's better to clean my rifles too often than not enough. Certainly every time prior to long term storage and most often after every trip to the range. During a hunt, I do pack along an oiled cloth to wipe the weapon down if there was any contact with moisture. Here is a quick breakdown of the tools and products I use to get the job done. MTM Case Gard gun vise/cradle. This one piece of equipment makes this chore twice as easy. By securing the rifle, I'm able to focus on the task at hand. Dewey Cleaning Rod. The coated rod protects the barrel. Nylon Brush and Brass Jag Bore Guide Essential for keeping the rod true, and again, protecting the barrel. Patches Gun Scrubber, Hoppe's 9 or similar product Sweet's 7.62 Bore Cleaning Solvent Rem Oil or similar product If I buy the smaller containers of the products above, they all fit neatly into the MTM portable gun maintenance center. This makes for a very portable kit. Next are the basic steps I take to clean my rifle. Alternate between a few solvent saturated brush strokes and patches soaked in your chosen powder solvent. Always follow with a dry patch. Once dry patch comes through clean, go to step two. Use Sweet's solvent to get the copper fouling out. This step usually takes me the longest. About an hour. I just follow the directions. Run one lightly lubed patch down the barrel. Use Rem Oil here. At this point the barrel is done. Spray the bolt with the aerosol Gun Scrubber. A toothbrush works great to loosen crud that is really caked on. Once a year, usually following the hunting seasons, I take apart the stock from the action so I can clean the underside of the barrel as well as other nooks and crannies. I oil those areas prior to putting the stock back on. I believe even basic cleaning such as this helps my rifle shoot better and will keep it in better overall condition. View the full article

Here is the video of Justin Franks buck in Mexico with Colburn and Scott Outfitters. I arrived at the ranch a day early and spotted this buck and got a little video. Darr and the hunters showed up the next day and Justin said he would like to pursue this buck. He made a good choice. Remember to watch the MEATEATER TV Sunday night the 27th of January on the Sportsmans Channel because Steven Rinella is hunting with Colburn and Scott Outfitters for Goulds Turkey. I have seen the trailer and it looks like it is going to be a great episode. View the full article

KUIU Super Down Hooded Jacket Review
Jay Scott posted a topic in Jay Scott Outdoors/Colburn and Scott Outfitters
I have to say that when I first heard of the KUIU Super down line it got me excited. I have been looking for a lightweight jacket to give me a little more warmth while glassing for trophy animals during the colder months here in Arizona and Northern Mexico. I picked up the KUIU Super Down Hooded jacket right after Christmas, just in time to leave for Sonora, Mexico for 20 days of Coues deer hunting. I wore the jacket virtually everyday while searching for the elusive grey ghosts. At only 10 ounces the weight to warmth ratio was very impressive. I really like the hood and it came in handy because we had unusual winds this year and colder temperatures than I can remember. The jacket can be worn alone or under the Guide jacket. Most of the time I would have it in my pack while hiking then upon arrival to my point I would just slip it on and start glassing. This piece of gear will be in the starting lineup for many hunts to come. Hats off to KUIU for continuing to push the bar for ultra lightweight hunting gear. We had an awesome time in Sonora Mexico hunting Coues deer over the past several weeks. Some great bucks were harvested and some new friendships were formed and old ones solidified. Check out the sweet gnarly buck that Kevin Kearney shot. More pics and video of all of the hunts to come in the next few days. Special thanks to my partners Darr Colburn and Janis Putelis for working so hard to provide a memorable hunt for our hunters at Colburn and Scott Outfitters. View the full article

Here are photos of the buck that Dr. Joe Harris harvested with us in Mexico. This buck was below me at about 600 yards and was lip curling and facing right at me when I first spotted him. I thought he was a mid teens buck until I realized he had short G2's. This buck is a big framed deer for sure and was rutting around like a wild man before he was harvested. It was a team effort to keep track of him and get him on the ground. Thanks to the Kearney's for helping out that afternoon. View the full article
