What size a bull you looking for?

71 yrs old with 19 bonus points, what unit for a Bull
SHOOTER replied to GoldToyBox's topic in Elk Hunting
Instead of a guide it might a be good idea and cheaper to find a resident that knows a unit with a handful of points, join apps with them and help them pull a late rifle tag in exchange to help you on the hunt. Win,Win. Just make sure you guys got your min points to draw and points average figured out. Just food for thought. -
I just got my build up and going have a little successful load development still doing some fine tuning. All data is from my 26" Proof Research 1:9 215gr Bergers Shot well with 80grs of H1000 .010" off the lands. This load was not hot in my gun but maybe in others depending on lot of H1000 and you chamber. I started at 77grs and stepped up in .5 grain increments with a ladder test till i got heavy bolt lift at 81.5 grs. The good upper node seemed to be right at 80-80.5 grs and velocity was around 2930fps. So I loaded 10 and shot groups this load shot sub .5 MOA. (Barrel should speed up a little after 150rds.) Hoping to settle in at 3000 FPS with the 215s. Tried a ladder test with 230gr Bergers and they never shot under an 1MOA started at 77 and hit pressure signs at 80.5 grains of H1000. Gave up on those after several attempts, barrel doesn't seem to like them. The 225gr ELDM hit pressure at 81 grs with H1000. The node seemed to be at 79-80 grs of H1000 .030" off the lands at 2960FPS. I've got 10 rounds loaded for a couple of groups at 80grs H1000 .030" off the lands still waiting to be shot just need a day off. But it looks like they will easily shoot under .5 moa from what i saw on the ladder test. Really liking the rifle and round so far just hoping the Hornady brass holds up. Hope this helps a little.

If you can get a deal on a leupold get a Mark5HD. Or find a good deal on NXS you wont regret either choice.

Does anyone know if the vortex rings are still made by seekins? Gun build is almost finished so its time to order scope and rings. Need 35mm rings but seekins says backordered. I can find the vortex all over the place thought that was a little weird. Thanks!

Thanks guys. I was referring to vortex precision matched rings.i bet are made by seekins still they still look the same just seems a little odd that the seekins 35mm lows are impossible to find and the vortex are pretty abundant.

Check your new base to ogive length and see if it changed. Adjust your seating depth to where your load was so your distance off the lands is still the same.it shouldnt change much. But I would check it. Look up panhandle precision on YouTube Sam does a real good job about explaining all of this... all of his videos are excellent.

I would guess brass is swelling and is in need of a full length sizing. I used to neck size and would have to FL size every 4th loading. A handful of rounds start to get to tight to chamber. (Not good in a hunting situation)Kind of a pain to "start over" with the brass so I just went to the .002" shoulder bump, full length size every time and have had very good results. No more neck sizing for me.

Magnum bolt face?

Are you full length or neck sizing?

I have been told and read as long as I can remember. That if you seat your bullets "too deep" you will "rob" case capacity and increase pressure which logically seems like it would be true but my experience always seems to say this is B.S. Everything my chrono, cases and drop at distance has told me is that the deeper that I seat the bullet the slower less pressure I have. The closer I get to the lands the faster and hotter the load. I've seen this in all my rifles that i have played with seating depth in. Example from this weekend loading for a 7 rem mag 180gr Berger Vld hunting 69.7grs H1000 .030" off lands 2910fps .020- 2920 fps .010-2930 fps .005"- 2940 fps I've seen this over and over again. With my 338 edge. I can cram a 300gr smk down to an oal of 3.690" (ogive about to go below case mouth) (90grs H1000) shoots great sub .5 moa at 2800 fps then I can hang it out to .010 off the lands at 3.850" oal (90grs H1000) and shoot sub .5 moa at 2885 fps. So why do people always get so set on worrying about seating depth and pressure? What have you guys seen ? Thanks

I've had good luck with .223 and a 60gr vmax around 2800fps. 1 little hole in and never had an exit. Inside is jello. I've have very different results with the 50 and 55 gr vmaxs tho so I stick with the 60gr.

Whenever I break or lose a phone (it happens about once a year for me haha) . I buy used a phone off of Swappa or Gazelle and always had good luck and save a pile of money. Never buying a new phone ever again.

If your velvet made it in the freezer in a reasonable time it will be fine. It's up to the taxidermist on how they want to treat it. Some freeze dry it some inject ect. I think freeze dried looks the best. The less the velvet gets touched and messed with the better it looks.
