Spotted owl on the grill?? Looks like an enjoyable evening. Good luck on training your dog(s). Just wait untill she starts draging whole elk heads back to the campfire.

good eyeballing.... coues antlers are hard enough to find without them being buried under the leaves.

Busted out the epoxy, Elmers glue, and dye to fix him up a bit. Filled all the age cracks with glue and ant. dust. Grafted on a piece of antler on the typical side where the 6 and 7 was chewed off.

Five hours of hiking...and for what?

Well..... better than nothing. -
Even before the new p/u head laws, most people I knew would call the g&f as a courtesy if nothing else, upon finding a fresh kill. If this is a perfectly natural death of the two animals, which it would seem, then I don't understand what all the fuss is about in regards to calling the g&f. The possibility of someone shooting a deer or elk in the process of sparring is not beyond being impossible. Im sure this is a legitimate question to be considered.

very nice .... How much do they weigh?

Thanks for finally posting the pictures. Awesome(rare) find!!

We took off this last weekend, did an overnighter in an attempt to find a lost camera from the week prior and shed hunt of coarse. Didn't find the video camera but it really was a neadle in a hay stack attempt. This was the same area I found an elk head in from the last week. This area did turn out to have some treasures to find beyond what we thought a week ago. More rare than 100 sheds to find is a lion skull with the claws to boot! Dustin was very happy to come across this find after a rather slow afternoon. Found this rather strange elk shed. Believe it or not this little club horn has the same weight as a typical 6 pointer, that being about 9 pounds. Found a couple of coues heads. The first one being in about the 90's range, and the second being in about the 80's. Both heads were about 4 years old. Small year old coues antler. Found this 7 point elk shed with a couple smaller nubs growing off it as well. Mabey he will be an eight point this year?! This was a 12 pound shed. It has a few inches broken off , but i'm not complaining. I found the pair to it , but it was broken at the 2nd, 4th, and main beam below the 5th. Would have loved to have seen him before the rut and winter. This ended up being our collection from a day and a half of looking. Ended up finding 17 antlers between the two of us. Rack and tack 88 pounds. Dustin's haul.

Here are a couple pictures I promised my son and his buddy that I would post. We found these last weekend in a rather open area near a fence. It was open enough that I could see them from about 400 feet away. Since we were walking that direction anyways, I let the kids get ahead and didn't say anything. Once they seen the antlers it turned into a mad foot race. Given the factor that this was a year old pair it was nothing short of amazing that they were laying where they were. As many people come through this area it was very surprising to me. This is a 6x6 pair and is in about the 330 range. Didn't find no browns but we did find a couple other single sheds. Antler hunting along with cave exploring and rock climbing ,which is a cool bonus in this area, can make for a fun day for your kids and yourself. Far from a record, but still cool to walk up on.

Nice finds. Cool markings on the snakes head. It would look better dead though.

Great pictures. Enjoyed the post. Looks like the makings of some cool memories.

The area we went in would normally be an over night stay. To antler hunt for 2 full days on the weekend is not uncommon for us. Go in very far and you spend half of the day just walking into your spot and back out again.

You never know what you will find. The next pair you find might be the 100,000 dollar set, who knows. Like anyone who enjoys any kind of sport, you realize its something you either get or you dont. I tend to enjoy shed hunting much more than watching a bunch of goobers throw a ball around and chase each other on tv for hours on end, but many people would viciously disagree with me. Its all about what you are in to. Shed antlers tell a story. They can tell you about what kind /how big an animal was in an area . The genetics that are common to the area, and to a large degree the livelihood of the deer/elk in an area. Check out some of the antler based furniture, crafts and uses on the web. There are hundreds of uses for antlers.

Awesome... Keep them comming.

Went antler hunting a couple times this last week. Went to a couple different areas close to town probably no more than 8 miles from civilization at any given point. These are the areas where quads and weekenders do frolic and play. The places that are easy on the body but hard on the horn finding. Still I was quite surprised to find 10 sheds and even some old white horns at that. These are areas that take alot of patients but can still be very rewarding. Found a couple of browns, nothing monumental in size, but not to be belittled. Found conclusive evidence in this cave linking the area to bigfoot and/or Antlerhead, not sure which. Seriously though I did find this shed in close proxcimity to the cave. There is a very worn and often used game trail within 30 feet of the cave. Judging by the pottery, flint shards and blackness of the ceiling ,this cave has a rich history. I'm sure this has been an ambush point for humans and predators both many times in the past.(and no I didn't loot out with anthing). This is within a 1/4 mile of the closest road but is very well hidden in the bushes none the less. small 7 point missed him by a year i guess. Yeah, yeah.... make fun if you want . Finding a pair of spikes isn't always as easy as you may think. Enjoy the wind or not, it can still be your friend if you are trying to walk up on anything. I was standing less than 30 yards from this little guy, out in the open none the less.

Nice find.... Bet we see a big o'l smile on his face if he finds the pair to it.

Antlers always look bigger when kids are holding them but this is a large antler none the less. I would guess this antler was from a 380+ bull, but try as I did I could never find the other side. This horn was about 5 years old when I found it and was in very good condition for being white. I didn't have a camera with me on this trip so I dont have any field pictures. I was in an area that was predominatly a mule deer area and wasnt looking to find any elk sheds, but it was a nice surprise. I utalized this shed when we built this chandelier for ourselves. We also used 5 other elk antlers and 3 coues sheds for the down light. Once you begin to find a few antlers, you are only limited by your imagination as to how to use them. antler and glass

14 miles or 20, i'm impressed! Given a day and age where anything further than the distance of a Wal-Mart parking lot is unbearable, or some people seem to think. Good to see a handful of people antler hunting the honest way. I enjoyed seeing the picture of the 5 point shed. That by far is one of the largest 5 point sheds i've ever seen pictures of. Be proud of that one!

Nice..... enjoyed the pictures

Went to a lower output area today but did manage to find this head. According to the new laws, this head would be kinda borderline. The head still was 1/2 covered with hair. I think it is legal since it was probably covered in snow for 4 months up until 3 weeks ago. Had there been an extra hungry coyote or raven in the lunch line to clean up its face, there wouldn't be an issue I presume, being the only hair left on the skeleton was on the face and on a leg bone or two. If its all good than I probably will go back and get it . Oh well legal or not if you can pick it up with a clear conscience then I will give you the G.P coordinance to do so...... not really! ........just kidding guys. It was within slingshot distance of a 4-wheeler road so its probably still safe from being found. Not to be totally skunked I did come home with a white horn.

Cool find. Bulls will often travel 10+ miles in a day for food/water. I know from experience how hard finding them can be even when you do find the actual bulls.
-
This is my smallest non-spike elk antler. Has a fullsized button but no length.
-
Nice find for sure.... like to see a picture of the 7 pointer from a diff. angle. Good dedication and ground work.

Cool herd of sheep. Looks like a good place to find brush bulls. Thanks for posting.
