Kilimanjaro replied to firstcoueswas80's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
If thus is now the case, you might want to go and change your new singnature line you've got!! "gone hunting!! Looking for a 100 incher for a day or so..then any deer that qualifies as a buck will do just fine!!" you know I'm just messin with ya..You just make it too easy. -
the last few day's outings...
Kilimanjaro replied to Kilimanjaro's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
thanks guys!! Amanda, MT has TONS of Block Management land.. It's private, but the state pays the landowner to allow access.. Works out pretty well. In addition to that, the landowners who aren't under the BMA program up here will usually let ya hunt their farm or ranch if you are polite and just basically ask for permission with a smile and a handshake.. Definatey NOT what I grew up with in TX. This place is like stepping back in time 50 years.. It's been great so far.. Doug, We'll save ya a few birds for next Oct!! Rica's gonna LOVE it up here!! If we time your trip right, we'll get ya into all 7 species of upland birdies! thanks for the pic compliment... same little ol camera I always have handy.. Its my Sony CyberShot with the Zeiss lens.. 6MP. tiny, and easy to shoot with while you are busy wrestling dogs, guns, etc.. -

It won't matter anyways... I know you. You've got athe most severe case of "itchy finger-itis" I've seen in quite some time.. First 3X3 that breaks 80 will be shot at... and prolly missed cuz of the buck fever.. you just can't help yourself!! Watch! Any takers?? I've got 20$.. I've seen it every year.. Every year, our very own Casey draws a tag, and every year he pops a buck that I could pick snuff outta my teeth with!! I'm crossin' my fingers for ya on this hunt buddy!! You finally got the tag you wanted.. But hey, should the usual happen once again, send that forkie up here to MT and I'll be sure and do a really bang up mount for ya. -

Thanks Lance!! I appreciate the kind words.. -
Since moving to MT, I have found out that I love Sharpies. I found out that I love the country that you call home.. Seems that there ain't too many tenants out there other than yourself.. That's quite OK, though.. it's you we came to see anyways... Every once in a while though, I'll find you in company of your neighbors... I love how you remind this quail loving Texan of a big, fluffy overgrown Bobwhite!! minus those big, overgrown snowshoes for feet!! Those definately aren't quail-like!! and lastly, I'm pretty sure the pups have taken a liking to you as well!!

Mr. Sharpie!!
Kilimanjaro replied to Kilimanjaro's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Well guys??? How did the Mearns opener go?? It was killing me that I wasn't there with my mutts in one of my all time favorite places chasin' those amazing little birds.. So, let's here how it went!! With pics preferably!! I figured I'd go ahead and throw a few more pics on the thread from the last couple of days.. Yesterday was great hunting.. plenty of birds, great weather, etc.. today was pretty much the exact opposite of yesterday.. the wind HOWLED!! And it was colder than a well digger's... well, you get the idea. And the birds were WILD!! They were getting up at 60 yards plus at times.. and the Huns, well let's just say that they were all safe on this trip. Wild little devils.. "At least I know I'm in the right area!!" "atta boy.. fetch 'em up.." they don't call 'em Sharpies for nothin'!! "Hey!! That's MY bird!!" "good pups.." beauty. -

You know me Amanda.. Im the resident CW.com bird fanatic!! And since I couldn't hunt big game here in MT this season, I'm taking FULL advantage of hammering all the birds I can!! And being that there is 7 diff species you can hunt up here, I've been keeping the mutts real busy!! I went out today and really got into the birds thick.. moved 6 coveys of grouse in 3 hours.. Our weather has been great.. it's been blue bird skies, with a dusting of the white stuff on the ground.. Highs in the upper 30s.. in all, perfect bird hunting weather. Not too hot, not too cold!! It is a bit chilly in the morning though.. it was 10 when I got uo this morning!! Don't worry about me giving up on the big stuff, though... I've got a BIG GAME hunt lined up for this upcoming Jan up here.. A trophy bison hunt on a huge ranch up in north central MT.. I can't wait! The bulls on this place look like wooly mammoths!! They're beyond huge! -

huntin' prairie dinosaurs...
Kilimanjaro posted a topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Sometimes when you're out west, you can hear the past talking to you in the wind blowing across the lonely lands... ...but once out in among it, you find that it's not quite as lonely as it first appears to the eyes... they're in there if ya find the right places and have a good partner to hunt behind.. ...and that partner of yours can also improve your time out on these big sky plains by giving you a helping hand every now and again.. Lord knows they're heavy!! and once brought to hand, you too can marvel at these prehistoric relics you've come all this way to find.. You'll soon realize that they are well worth the miles driven, and the long wind blown miles walked...They truely are special. ....once you've made it back to the truck, take a second to really look over and feel these western throwbacks you've had the privlage to hunt.. you'll never look at the vast expanses of the great American west the same again... You too will then realize there's more than just gold out there in them 'thar hills!! ...and if ya make it back to the grassland country with enough light left, and if you still have a tidge of luck on your side, you can see if you can find his grass loving cousin.. We did!! we spent the last few days up here in Montana chasin' Sage Bombers, Sharpies, Huns, and even a few big, gaudy Roosters.. -
nice buck Tony!!

what a beautiful deer.. That is what I think of when I think of a trophy coues deer. Perfect.

New B&C World Record Coues
Kilimanjaro replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Dunno Bill... as much as we here on CWT love coues, I wouldn't think the new WR coues would bring that much.. just not nearly as popular of an animal as a regualr WT.. The Hansen buck was the epiteme of all that is hunting here in North America.. the "perfect" specimen.. and is still regarded as such to this day, so many years later.. Same with the Jordan buck killed so many years back.. I would think that a coues WR would make headlines, but no where near to the extent the Hansen buck did.. a WR coues would be kinda like the new WR muskox or Sitka blacktail.. Cool? Heck yes! BUT, people would just as quickly forget all about it and be right back to talking about the next big WT to come out of Iowa, Ohio, Texas, or whereever it may be.. Back to that 21 day full bag Tanzanian safari.. Man, that would ROCK!! -
New B&C World Record Coues
Kilimanjaro replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I think you've an inflated view of the value of a set of antlers, even a set larger than Ed Stockwell's. A 21-day full-bag Tanzania safari will cost about $35,000 in daily rates, not counting travel from Tucson, charter flights, gun fees, and all the other fees the government tacks on, before you pull a trigger. Then add the trophy fees for a "full-bag" of four of the Big Five, plus all of Tanzania's glamour antelope species, plus tips, dipping, trophy expediting, shipping, etc., and you could double that. Add the argali hunt and you're talking more than $100,000. I can't imagine even the richest antler collector paying anywhere near that much. Barbara Stockwell, I suspect, would give a lot of thought to selling Ed's world record antlers if someone offered a fifth of the cost of your hunts in Tanzania and Mongolia. Forget about making money from magazine articles. You might sell one to Outdoor Life or Field and Stream (but not both) for $1,000 -- if you're a good-enough writer. More likely, someone else will write and sell your story. The smaller outdoor magazines pay $300 or so per article, but after a couple of articles are published your market will dry up. The manufacturers of the equipment you used, MIGHT pay a small amount for your endorsement if their ad agencies recommended endorsements, which most won't. At any rate, don't expect to make much money here, either. As for personal appearances after shooting a world record you can forget that, too, unless you're the greatest showman on earth, which few of us are. If I were to take a buck bigger than Stockwell's, the first thing I would do would be to try to get a wildlife manager to follow me to the scene and take lots of photos to document where and when I shot it and with what. (There are just too many people who like to spread rumors and lies about record breakers.) After doing that, I'd jump up and click my heels, spit twice, and yell, "HOT dang, WHOOPEE!" Bill Quimby wasn't the Milo Hanson buck estimated at well over 500K?? If so, I think I WOULD have plenty to go on my dream hunts.. and I already knew what those hunts would cost.. but we were already talking "what-if's" as it is, so why not shoot for the stars...
